One of the most admirable things of this series is the perfect choice of settings. Everything in the present is cold, dismal and banal, reeking of desperation as seen through the eyes of Adrien, who's a tormented soul.

The past, despite the violence is almost seen through rose-tinted lenses and the beauty of the summer is enhanced by Solange's beauty, even if her character is despicable. But the "enchanted" life of Albert and Solange is drawing to a close, when the two of them start to have reproductive issues.

Despite their kinky habits, they have pretty banal desires for the future: Solange wants one, with children, while nihilistic Albert doesn't want either.

Albert forces Solange to have two abortions, the first one shown even too graphically, with Solange held down on a kitchen table by Albert, while a peasant woman is inserting a knitting needle into her "privates"... OK, no need to go into details, but one may guess that Solange wasn't too happy about that.
