Climate change is getting worse day after day, and every uncomfortable conversation we’ve been putting off for decides is waiting for us just over the horizon. Caitlin Cronenberg’s debut feature Humane dives headfirst into that messy, chaotic crisis we’ve built for ourselves, in a chamber piece that has one affluent family forced to make the ultimate decision. It’s a classic thriller set-up with a premise ripped from the headlines of tomorrow’s newspaper, and a great cast of character actors ready to rip each other apart as soon as shit hits the fan.
The world of Humane is not unlike our own. With dwindling resources and increasingly inhabitable conditions, it’s like looking 5 minutes into the future. A future where fresh vegetable and meats are prohibited, and standing for any length of time in direct sunlight with no protection is practically a death sentence. But in...

“Satan is his father and his name is Adrian!” shouts the coven leader Roman Castevet at the end of 1968’s. Rosemary’s Baby. “He shall overthrow the mighty and lay waste their temples. He shall redeem the despised and wreak vengeance in the name of the burned and the tortured.”
Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Unfortunately, the sequels chronicling Adrian’s rise to power didn’t quite live up to those expectations. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.
But for the next film branching out of Rosemary’s Baby,...

In “Boy Kills World,” Bill Skarsgård has burning eyes and model cheekbones, sinewy arms popping out of a dirty red athletic vest, and a feral pout that makes him look like Jean-Claude Van Damme crossed with Lou Reed. He plays a deaf-mute avenger, known only as Boy, who kills people in insanely violent ways. Yet through it all, the character retains his innocence. He’s a wounded wild child in a man’s body.
Raised in a mountain hideaway by a martial-arts trainer and resistance fighter called the Shaman (Yayan Ruhian), who may remind you, at first, of the Zen master in “Kill Bill: Volume 2,” Boy had his past taken away from him by a vicious totalitarian regime. During the Culling, an annual ritual where law and order is maintained by having criminals confront each other in a state-sanctioned televised death match, Boy saw his little sister, Mina (Quinn Copeland...

Exclusive: Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher) is the latest addition to Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that Antoine Fuqua is directing for Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International, sources tell Deadline.
The actor will play famed attorney Johnnie Cochran, who repped Jackson in a 1993 child molestation case that was settled out of court. As previously announced, Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson leads the ensemble as Michael, with Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier and Juliano Krue Valdi among others set for key roles.
Scripted by by John Logan, Michael promises to bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became known worldwide as the King of Pop. The film will examine Jackson’s triumphs and tragedies — from his human side, to his public and private struggles, to the accusations and the 24/7 media microscope Jackson lived under, even at his artistic apex. Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature-length directorial debut, Humane, presents a world where environmental collapse is no longer theoretical. While the full extent of that collapse is never fully detailed, it’s bad enough where people can no longer expose their bare skin to the sun anymore. Naturally, instead of, say, regulating the environmental impact of big businesses, working with scientists, or increasing efforts toward sustainability, the governments of the world collectively decide on going full Thanos: 20% of the world’s population must be culled, and people are being encouraged to volunteer for euthanasia. Those who volunteer are given a $250,000 reward to distribute to their next of kin, and as you can imagine, lower classes and marginalized folks aren’t taking the idea of state-sponsored murder for cash very well.
That’s a hell of a starting point, and it’s one that seems bent on slowly ratcheting up the tension into white-knuckle terrain,...

In the "Futurama" episode "Amazon Women in the Mood", the blustering misogynist Zapp Brannigan (Billy West) takes control of a space-bound restaurant and pilots it through dangerous areas of space, merely because it's more adventurous that way. Naturally, the restaurant is damaged during its voyage and crash lands on a distant, uncharted planet with the Planet Express crew. They discover on the uncharted planet a race of nine-foot-tall Amazon women clad in animal skin bikinis and carrying clubs. The Amazonians rarely see men on their planet and are not exactly sure what men are supposed to be good for.
This premise, of course, is cribbed from any number of pornographic male fantasies stretching back at least to the publication of H. Rider Haggard's "She" in 1886. There is a streak of colonialist fiction that dramatized faraway places (that is: far away from Western Europe) as Edenic locales where women wear...

Four journalists head into the heart of a United States tearing itself apart in Civil War. Alex Garland’s best film yet? Quite possibly. Our review:
It’s a wonder what people who live in war-torn countries might think of Civil War, the latest film from writer-director Alex Garland. Would they give a ‘welcome to my world’ shrug? Would they perhaps feel a frisson of schadenfreude at the sight of a too-big-to fail democracy tearing itself apart?
Whatever their reaction might be, it’s the realism with which Garland plunges North America into a bitter internal conflict that gives Civil War such an electrical charge. We in the West have become used to images of brutality in far-off lands; when those images are set against all-American chain stores – a crashed military chopper outside a Jc Penney, tanks rolling through city streets – the results are indelibly disturbing.

Under $5 million; no first time directors (unless there’s a named producer); actually good. These used to be the tenets by which Blumhouse built its name. But oh how things have changed. It’s looking increasingly like the little studio that could is making a land grab for virtually every property in horror-dom.
The latest trailer to drop from Blumhouse is for Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name which caused a big buzz when it hit Shudder for being so utterly and depressingly grim. Blumhouse snapped it up and cast James McAvoy, star of Blumhouse movies Split and Glass, as the central psycho. James Waktins who made similarly nasty and misanthropic horror Eden Lake has directed and the film is set to release in September. That is a pretty speedy turnaround as these things go, but Blumhouse always was agile. McAvoy is good...

Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

While the studios' CinemaCon presentations are usually about the coming year's slate, there are always usually announcements of future projects. Lionsgate took the chance at its 2024 edition to announce that it is partnering with Blumhouse to develop a new take on classic 1999 found footage horror The Blair Witch Project.
Yes, the story of three film students who venture into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the titular local scare legend… And are never heard from again, the footage being tracked down and assembled after the fact.
Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, it famously had some thinking that the ill-fated trio really did perish and that the film is all that remains of their quest. The movie spawned a sequel, the benighted Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and Adam Wingard's own fresh take, 2016's Blair Witch.

“Paranormal Activity” juggernaut Blumhouse is returning to the Og found footage franchise, “The Blair Witch Project.”

Horror maestro Jason Blum is reviving “The Blair Witch Project” for Lionsgate.
It’s a fitting pair because Blumhouse is known for its low-budget approach to terror. And the original “Blair Witch Project” had such a minuscule price tag it became one of the most profitable movies ever. Blumhouse is behind the skin-crawling “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge” franchises, as well as newer breakout hits like “M3GAN” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” Blumhouse movies have generated nearly $6 billion at the worldwide box office — and that’s without spending all that much on production costs.
The announcement was made at CinemaCon, the annual movie theater trade show that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. This film marks the first in a multi-picture agreement with Blumhouse reimagining horror classics for Lionsgate. Blumhouse, which has a first-look deal with Universal Pictures, recently collaborated with Lionsgate on “Imaginary,” a thriller about a sinister teddy bear from childhood.

Lionsgate and Blumhouse are headed back to the woods for a new Blair Witch Project movie.
It’s part of a multifilm deal between the studios that will see Blumhouse reimagine horror classics from Lionsgate. The deal follows the duo collaborating on Imaginary, which has earned $38.2 million since release last month.
1999’s Blair Witch Project is considered one of the most profitable films of all time. Made for $35,000, it would go on to gross $249 million globally (postproduction costs put its budget closer to $200,00 to $500,000). It ushered in a found-footage movie boom and spawned a 2001 sequel and a 2016 follow-up. Roy Lee, who produced the 2016 film, is back for the new installment.
Lionsgate film chair Adam Fogelson and Jason Blum announced the news.

Like Hideo Kojima and his collection of scanned celebrities, Taylor Sheridan is adding another star to his Paramount+ collection as Boss Level and The Purge franchise badass Frank Grillo joins the cast of Tulsa King: Season 2. The MCU alum boards the Sylvester Stallone-led crime drama as a series regular, playing Bill Bevilaqua, a Kansas City mobster interested in Tulsa. Is Grillo’s character trying to muscle in on The General’s territory? Who will tell him how much of a bad idea that would be?
Sylvester Stallone stars in Tulsa King as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York mafia capo. After he’s released from prison, his boss unceremoniously exiles him to set up shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After a brief break, Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show and called out Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary.
The Comedy Central host dinged the Canadian businessman after he called Donald Trump’s NY civil fraud case a victimless crime.
Stewart mocked O’Leary after he said that the case against Trump didn’t go over well within the investment community as anyone could be targeted now.
“I am surprised to hear this from Kevin O’Leary, the guy who’s such an a**hole that even the other people on Shark Tank think he’s an a**hole,” Stewart joked.
Stewart proceeded to call out O’Leary’s hypocrisy and chill demeanor about Trump overvaluing his assets, as the Shark Tank star gets upset when investment seekers overvalue their companies. Clips of O’Leary on the ABC show played with the venture capitalist being harsh to the entrepreneurs over claims they overvalued their company.

First-time feature writer/director Chris Nash’s slasher “In a Violent Nature” focuses on undead serial killer Johnny (Ry Barrett) who stalks new victims in the woods. Desperate times at the box office call for some desperate measures, and AMC always has some trick it has up its sleeve to lure new audiences into movie theaters. (Or simply to build revenue — remember the gold mine that wasn’t quite a gold mine? The retail-investment community on Reddit sure does.)
But AMC Entertainment has been in rare form this week, even for CEO Adam Aron.
On Friday, AMC announced a partnership with Blumhouse for a new film festival they’re calling “Halfway to Halloween.” Tickets went on sale today for a five-day run of different Blumhouse films starting on March 29. Tickets are just $8 (per film), and you can see M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” the original “The Purge,” “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Insidious,” and “The Invisible Man” all on the big screen.

The WGA strike of 2023 has created a fortunate side effect. While writers demanded better pay from studios -- as well as a guarantee that they would not be replaced by clunky automated writing machines -- many films and TV shows halted production. Without writers, the Hollywood system ground slowly to a halt. When the strike was resolved, production began again, but it left a 148-day gap in most studios' production schedules. To fill the gaps, some studios have adopted an ingenious approach: merely re-release some of their biggest hits from years past, allowing audiences to see some of their favorite movies on the big screen again.
In the case of Pixar, films like "Soul," "Luca," and "Turning Red" are being re-released to make up for losses incurred during the pandemic. Those films were all released directly onto Disney+ in the U.S. and only played in select theaters internationally, making...

Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.

Plus, films as diverse as Dead Poet’s Society, Training Day, The Purge, Predestination and Lord Of War – the sequel to the latter is currently in development, with writer and director Andrew Niccol and star Nicholas Cage on board. It has not been confirmed if Hawke will appear.
However, he has also steadily built up an impressive career behind the camera. Blumhouse has churned out some critical and commercial hits, yet continues on a losing streak with a sloppily put together horror about an imaginary friend
It’s yet another sub-par day at the Blumhouse factory, production line operating at full, breakneck speed, yet machinery on the perilous verge of total collapse. The house of horror, behind hit franchises like Insidious, Paranormal Activity and The Purge, has become something of a franchise in itself, a branded string of low-budget films making a high profit, yet quality control has forever been an issue and in the last year or so, it’s barely existed.
On the first cursed weekend of January 2023, usually home to the most unintentionally horrifying horror films, M3gan upended critical expectations and scored reviews as impressive as its box office total.
But normality soon resumed with a limp Insidious sequel, a junky time travel slasher, a loathed Exorcist reboot,...

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

Exclusive: Here’s a big one that multiple studios are bidding on right now from Platinum Dunes: Wolf Night.

Liebesman is a South African filmmaker whose movies have grossed $1.3 billion at the global box office; his titles include Platinum Dunes’ 2014 live-action reboot of Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Warner Bros’ Wrath of the Titans, Sony’s Battle Los Angeles, New Line’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Revolution Studios/Sony’s Darkness Falls. He’s an EP on the MTV series The Shannara Chronicles and directed four episodes of Paramount+’s Halo series. Liebesman also executive produced the Universal Robert Downey Jr. family movie Dolittle.

Blumhouse is the premiere destination for horror in Hollywood. From homegrown franchises such as "The Purge" to reviving classics like "Halloween," they hit it out of the park time and time again, with few misses in between. Because they also tend to keep budgets low, even their misses tend not to be disastrous. That brings us to "Imaginary," the latest Blumhouse horror film that is undoubtedly aiming to become their next franchise. It is not to be confused with "If," the family-friendly imaginary friends movie starring Ryan Reynolds. So, can this scary teddy bear flick deliver the goods at the box office? Or will this be a more middling result?
Though Universal almost always distributes Blumhouse's theatrical features, Lionsgate is handling this one, which hails from director Jeff Wadlow ("Truth or Dare"). It, at present, appears to have a solid chance at becoming another winner for the studio when it opens next weekend,...
