“There’s a part of me that just likes letting rip and there’s an anarchic quality to me, which comes out in some characters,” declares Ruth Wilson about her latest iteration of an unhinged, deeply disturbed woman at the center of Showtime’s dark comedy-drama thriller “The Woman in the Wall.” For our recent webchat she adds about the nuances of portraying a character plagued by chronic sleepwalking that, “one of the things that appeal to me with this show was what she does in her sleep, and the idea of her subconscious coming out in her sleep and her real thoughts and feelings and actions being expressed in her sleep and her having no control over it, and her being scared of sleeping because of what she might do, I thought, that’s such a brilliant premise to set a character up,” she says. “The line between sleep and awake becomes very fine.

Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.
When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”
She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”
The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

Anyone looking to debate the limits of progress should cast an eye on 1980s Ireland. As a generation born in revolution and civil war moved from farms to towns, a middle class emerged. Some people had televisions; if they were good, some of their kids had Levi’s jeans. As certain things loosened, the Catholic church’s grip on most aspects of Irish life seemed to only grow tighter. Between 1922 and 1996, and aided by a callow state, the church was responsible for imprisoning tens of thousands of women (mostly young single mothers who couldn’t afford the child) into what was essentially indentured servitude. In these “laundries,” women worked seven days a week and weren’t allowed to leave. Their babies were taken from them and sold for adoption, or worse. Around 1,600 women died. The number of babies is estimated to be in the thousands.

In scientific terms, double blind refers to an experiment in which neither the subjects nor those in charge of the experiment know who is getting the drug and who is getting a placebo. The new Irish thriller Double Blind, not to be confused with another medical thriller of the same name, revolves around one such experiment, a first stage trial of a drug that might eliminate the need for sleep. And if that sounds familiar, it might be due to another recent Irish film, The Sleep Experiment, based off of the creepypasta The Russian Sleep Experiment. But while there are echoes of that here, the two tell their stories in very different ways.
Double Blind follows Claire, a broke young woman who volunteers for a clinical trial run by Blackwood Pharmaceuticals.

Her lingering trauma as a result of the experience bleeds into every aspect of her adult life, leading to bouts of sleepwalking and intense paranoia. So when Lorna wakes up one morning to find a dead woman in her house and no recollection of who she is or how she got there, she assumes she’s responsible and quickly hides the body in the walls of her home.

The Woman in the Wall, which dropped its first episode on Paramount+ Friday, tells the fictional story of a fictional woman played by The Affair‘s Ruth Wilson. But there’s one element of the show that’s very real, and that’s the unsavory history of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries.
Friday’s series premiere — which will have its linear debut on Paramount+ With Showtime (formerly known as Showtime) on Sunday at 9/8c — talks obliquely about the Magdalene Laundries and the years of abuse they facilitated, but there’s no formal explanation of what they were. From the 18th to 20th centuries,...

Created by Joe Murtagh, a BAFTA Award nominee for the 2019 film “Calm With Horses,” Showtime’s “The Woman in the Wall” opens in the dreary fictional town of Kilkinure, Ireland, in 2015. As Clare Harner’s infamous poem “Immortality” echoes in the background, a woman dressed in a stark white nightgown awakens in the middle of the road.
Passing a gang of cows and some nosey neighbors on her barefoot walk back toward town, it’s clear Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is no stranger to sleepwalking. Abrasive and aggressive, with a barely contained rage, despite her odd morning, Lorna attempts to go on with her day as planned. After handling an unsettling leak in her home, she heads to her job as a seamstress. However, a note left for her regarding the whereabouts of her long-lost daughter sets her on an unexpected path. It’s a journey that will uncover decades...

No one sleeps easily in Showtime‘s provocative six-part Irish mystery The Woman in the Wall — especially not Lorna (the mesmerizing Ruth Wilson of Luther and The Affair fame), whose sleepwalking antics have made her something of a pariah in her small town. We first see Lorna as she awakens in the middle of a country road, and even when she’s fully conscious, she appears to be in a state of perpetual disorientation. Lorna’s unstable state is further rattled when she receives a note saying someone has information about her daughter, who was taken from her 30 years ago (declared dead) in a notorious convent and workhouse for unwed girls, a trauma from which she has never fully recovered. A pending class-action lawsuit against these cruel “mother and baby homes” provides a backdrop to Lorna’s ordeal, which only intensifies when she awakens from one of her spells and...

Early in The Woman in the Wall, Showtime’s limited series focused on the horrors of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, the local guard of a sleepy Irish town named Kilkinure shares a bit of lore with the city-slicker detective assigned to investigate the murder of a priest. The younger man asks about the presence of sculpted combs across the town, prompting the older man to spin the tale of the wailing woman, a ghost whose existential terror and rage can only be soothed by the tender act of having her hair combed. At first, this moment seems like a bit of deftly written and performed atmosphere-building, meant to capture the pathos and perpetual gloom of life in the isolation of the rural countryside.

Upon his arrival in the remote Irish town of Kilkinure, detective Colman (Daryl McCormack) cannot help but ask about the hairbrushes he keeps seeing in the windowsills. Massey (Simon Delaney), a local guard, explains they’re meant to ward off the banshee rumored to stalk the area. It’s not that the citizens necessarily believe in spirits, he clarifies: “Doesn’t mean we’re not afraid of them, though.”
But then, this community has more reason than most to fear the wails of mourning women. Showtime’s The Woman in the Wall (which aired on BBC One in the U.K. starting in August) isn’t a ghost story per se, but it’s the tale of a haunting nonetheless — rooted in the very real atrocity of the country’s Catholic-run Magdalene laundries, to harrowing and ultimately quite moving effect.

It isn’t just you. We’re two weeks into the new year and every show on TV has become a murder mystery.
There are reality murder mysteries (Traitors) and animated murder mysteries (Grimsburg) and British murder mysteries (Criminal Record) and occult murder mysteries (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale). There are murder mysteries without daylight (True Detective: Night Country) and adapted recent murder mysteries (Fool Me Once) and adapted characters in original murder mysteries (Monsieur Spade).
Those are just January premieres. So far. There’ll be at least one more new murder mystery before the end of the week (The Woman in the Wall).
It’s easy to point to the blockbuster success of the two Knives Out movies and the steady success of the Kenneth Branagh/Michael Green-steered Hercule Poirot movies as a business-driven cause.
Sociologically, it’s easy to point to a decade of distrust of institutional policing...

She doubts herself, because she has long suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking due to trauma in her youth. Midseason is the new fall.
As Hollywood and the broader industry continue to recover from the debilitating dual actors and writers strikes, the 2024 television landscape is coming into focus. All of the broadcast networks have set return dates for most of their shows, with the postponed Emmy Awards now set for January 15 and no usual Premiere Week to speak of.
But as series return to production with lower episode counts this truncated season, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.
The roster covers hundreds of broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting through 2024, with many listed as Tba as the year kicks off. It includes series and season debuts, shows returning from hiatus and some one-offs such as live sports and awards specials but not movies. The list includes shows that are in limbo for now but are likely to get premiere dates in the coming months.

Showtime, one of the most trusted premium cable channels this side of HBO, is rebranding. The channel, owned by Paramount Global, is officially set to relaunch with a new name in January 2024. Get ready for the Paramount+ with Showtime era. This is a title that the company had already been leaning into on the streaming side, but now the long-standing cable channel is taking on the new branding as well. For better or worse, it's a corporate synergy move.
On January 8, 2024, Showtime will officially rebrand as Paramount+ with Showtime, so anyone who subscribes to the channel will need to be aware of the title change. Showtime’s linear network, which launched more than four decades ago during the early days of cable, will officially get a new name on January 8, 2024.
The network will be rebranded Paramount+ with Showtime. Parent company Paramount Global had announced the rebrand earlier this year, combining the previously separate Paramount+ and Showtime streaming apps into a single service under the new name.

The show is over for Showtime as a standalone brand.
As of Jan. 8, 2024, Paramount Global will rebrand the linear Showtime cable network as Paramount+ With Showtime — the same name as the company’s top-tier streaming package. With the name change, the premium cable network will add select Paramount+ original series.
Confusingly, however, some subscribers of the linear Showtime channel will not have access to the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming plan. Instead, Paramount+ With Showtime cable subscribers will be able to access programming online via the authenticated streaming apps of pay-tv partners. There are several characters in the show The Woman in the Wall that made quite an impact on the entire narrative of how the Church and their convents had gone out of their way to harass young girls. These teenage girls had their characters questioned to the point where a lot of them were put to hard labor and shamed for getting pregnant. The clergy made their lives extremely difficult without worrying about the repercussions of their actions in the long run. They carried out all of this, aiming to control society and bring it to their order.
