More importantly, and I have spent dozens and dozens of reviews on this point, the writers found how to "connect" with the audience via the plight of the Gwen character.
That is all it takes to make a difference.
And the "enchantment" scene where Merlin alone sees the reality of what is before him ... brilliant.
