Very relevant.
Sleepin_Dragon22 April 2023
Wicky is asked to clean a statue, one that looks like a piece of male anatomy, when he arrives on the scene, he find a protester, who blocks his progress.

How relatable was this episode, to begin with, there the dismal Council Officer, wasted money, pedestrian streets that make no sense, money wasted on awful, hideous monuments, sound familiar?

The issue in hand, the statue, credit to the writing, for giving two points of view, a bit of balance is always nice.

Not many laughs, but just so very relevant for 2023, my own City has an abysmal statue, so I really do get it, I wasn't a fan of what it replaced, but the current one, I'd sooner see the nut.

It was good to see Davros himself, Terry Molloy, best of all though, the presence of Zoe Wanamaker, who is great as Lucille, she's brilliant, I lived The Harry Potter reference.

8/10.

Reflects The Mess We Live In
girliefingers26 April 2023
This episode is about everything that is wrong with society today. We are governed by self-serving zealots whose only interest is to be seen to be doing something good but in doing so or creating something bad. It had me giggling from time to time put some of it was a bit too close to reality for me to be comfortable. It does make me wonder what will be thinking about the this time when we look back in reflection in 20 years or so. I for one I'm a bit embarrassed to be living in this period of time. Anyway, this episode is the best of the season so far and I really enjoyed it. It's been a bit hit and miss for series 2.

Did you just wink at me

I am surprised this episode went through as it takes a dig at the PC society we live in these days. The Councillor was accurate in her representation of the do gooders in society who think they know what is best for the community, shaming anyone who may think differently. I can imagine thousands of these self centred righteous types scattered all over counties, bulldozing anyone in their path and making expensive decisions with money that is not theirs. $130k for a travesty of a statue, I believe it, happened in our town. Zoe's character says you can't erase history but learn from it, the good and the bad. So many one-liners that one really needs to go back and rewatch. A brilliant episode that reflects life in 2023.

Wow I thought I was watching a US show
dskala29 October 2023
I do not watch US shows here anymore. I either watch MDK shows on YouTube or a lot of British shows like Midsomer Murders, Father Brown, Sister Boniface, Death h in Paradise, etc.

The Cleaner is a great show but then there was this episode. I'm tired of people taking down statues and renaming military basis, schools, etc all in the name of equity. It's not equity by any means and when I was watching this episode, I was like great another country shoving their politics down my throat in a form of a show.

I did decide to continue to watch it and it was amazing. I think politicians and activists should watch it. It turned out to be a wonderful episode.

The Statue
Prismark1022 April 2023
Wicky literally steps into small time politics as he heads into a sleepy town to clean up a statue.

The first problem is getting there. The roundabouts and the pedestrianised town centre drives Wicky round the twist.

Then he has to park his van and walk to the statue carrying his cleaning materials.

Only to find that the statue looks like that of a giant gonad. It is a chickpea according to the verbose town centre manager.

While cleaning it Wicky is attacked by Lucille (Zoë Wanamaker) who has graffitied the statue. She is angry because the previous statue was taken down. One depicting her father who made his money because of the slave trade.

I think I was ahead of Wicky as to the reason why the previous statue aroused controversy. Although the show tried to highlight debate as to whether you clean up and erase history or place it into context.

In a show like The Cleaner, I reckon the message will fall into deaf ears.

Much better was the issue of pedestrianisation. It really does drive the punters away.
