Director Eduardo Rodriguez has been, at least for me, something of a underrated talent. His first Hollywood movie, Stash House, was an effective action thriller and his follow-up, El Gringo, was a superb film and star-making vehicle for action star Scott Adkins. And – at least for me – his Fright Night sequel-c0me-remake was a decent entry in the franchise and one that I enjoyed more than the Colin Farrell iteration. So when I discovered his latest feature film, You’re Not Alone, was due out this week – after apparently being filmed in 2016 under the title Unwanted – I knew I had to check it out… And I’m glad I did.

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling for that sweet, sweet Bible money. This year's flood of Christian films has been so strong (with Noah leading the pack), and it's about to intensify with this year's Ridley Scott-directed Exodus: Gods And Kings. And that working relationship is bearing fruit, as Scott and Fox are once again teaming up for the epic retelling of David and Goliath. Variety reports that Ridley Scott's Scott Free production company is reteaming with Fox to present David, a narrative about the Bible's King David. Scott's only on as a producer thus far, though the intention is for Scott to eventually direct, even if the busy director has several plans for future movies. Little-known Jonathan Stokes, who previously penned the Scott Adkins action film El Gringo, will grab the pen for this film, which reportedly will focus on the reign...

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods And Kings just landed its first trailer and already there are reports that the director isn’t quite finished adapting Biblical tales. Scott is reportedly producing a movie about King David from the classic Old Testament tale of David and Goliath. Jonathan Stokes (El Gringo) has been tapped to write the script for the untitled movie. We all know that story of David slaying the giant Goliath, so it’s interesting to note that the plot is...

McM Comic Con and Memorabilia Birmingham take place this weekend, March 22nd-23rd, at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC). Unlike the huge event that is McM Comic Con London, this event is on a smaller scale – focusing more on memorabilia and the attending autograph guests. Having always attended the London event we took time out last November to attend our first McM Comic Con/Memorabilia Birmingham and enjoyed it so much we’re heading back this weekend.
But why should you attend? Well here’s out Top 5 reasons to attend McM Comic Con/Memorabilia Birmingham:
1) The Guests
As with any McM event, the guest list for Birmingham is packed with a veritable smorgasbord of actors and actresses from movies, television and anime. Plus for the more grown-up nerds there’s even an appearance from the odd glamour model and porn star!

Well it’s that time of year again, end of year/best of list time! If you’ve been reading this site – or Blogomatic3000 – for a while now you’ll know my tastes are generally a little different from the more mainstream sites and so my Top 10′s are too! And whilst there have been plenty of “worthy” titles to get cinephiles excited, I’ve been finding a wealth of movie gold in the direct to DVD market (my cinematic home).
The usual disclaimers apply to this Top 10 – this is a list of my favourite films of the year, the films that got me excited and the ones that remained with me after the credits rolled…

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has set Jonathan W. Stokes to adapt Six Years, the Harlan Coben novel that was bought by the studio early this year as a potential star vehicle for Hugh Jackman. Mark Gordon is producing. The logline: a man watches his life love marry another man. The groom dies six years later and the guy can’t help but try to glimpse the widow at the funeral. She’s not the same woman. The book was published last March and became another bestseller for Coben, whose Tell No One was turned into the Guillaume Canet French film, with remake rights at Warner Bros where Argo scribe Chris Terrio is writing it. Stokes wrote three scripts that made the Black List. They are Blood Mountain, which is being financed independently by Derby Street Films and Movie Package Co. with Lawrence Bender producing and Sergei Bodrov attached to direct, and Stokes executive producing; Murders & Acquisitions,...

Originally lensed in 1985, Fright Night, from writer/director Tom Holland (Child’s Play), went on to become a favourite amongst my generation and to this day is still held in very warm regard. The sequel, which followed in 1987, wasn’t as successful as the original, yet remains a much sought after title on DVD and Blu-ray. The original film was remade in 2011 starring Colin Farrell in the vampire role and Fright Night 2: New Blood is a sequel to that remake. With me so far?
Well now it gets a little confusing. This iteration of Fright Night 2 is a remake of the Original Fright Night, not the sequel or the remake, which also throws the legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory into the mix. Still with me?

Let’s be brutally honest, I absolutely detest the “football hooligan” sub-genre of British cinema, a genre which has – for reasons I personally can’t fathom – flourished on DVD here in the UK in recent years.
Now that may sound strange given that I’m more than happy to sit through sleazy, near-the-knuckle horror and exploitation flicks (some of which would turn people’s stomachs) but there’s just something about the genre and seeing grown men beat the living hell out of each other on film in the name of a “sport”, that puts me right off. Especially when that’s the Only selling point of a movie! Which is why you’ve never seen a review of such a film from me – not...

Breaking: In a preemptive six-figure three-book deal, up and coming screenwriter Jonathan W. Stokes makes his novel debut on Addison Cooke And The Treasure Of The Incas. The adventure story, sold on a proposal to Penguin imprint Philomel Books, has a globe-trotting Goonies vibe and follows a sixth-grader and his pals as he tries to save his archaeologist parents after they’ve been kidnapped by fortune hunters. Philomel president Michael Green will edit the novels, the first of which will be published in 2015. The others will follow a year later. The last three scripts Stokes wrote made the 2011 and 2012 Black Lists. They are Blood Mountain, which is being financed independently by Derby Street Films and Movie Package Co. with Lawrence Bender producing and Sergei Bodrov attached to direct, and Stokes executive producing; Murders & Acquisitions, which is set up at Warner Bros. with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg producing; and Border Country.

The “Fright Night” franchise is not dead yet. Not at all.
The somewhat sequel “Fright Night 2: New Blood” is released today on DVD and Blu-ray. In this movie, actress Jamie Murray plays the vampire seductress Gerri who preys over Charley.
This sequel is kind of a remake of the original movie re-introducing the main fan favorite characters of Charley Brewster, Peter Vincent, Ed Bates and Amy Peterson. And the primary adversary is a female vampire instead of suspicious vampire neighbor Jerry.
The horror comedy film introduces a new cast to star alongside Murray with Will Payne, Sean Power, Sacha Parkinson and Chris Waller.
Here’s the synopsis: By day Gerri Dandridge is a sexy professor, but by night she transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves...

Maybe it’s just me and my undying appreciation for all things Jaime Murray, but this trailer for “El Gringo” and “Safe House” director Eduardo Rodriguez’s direct-to-dvd “Fright Night 2″ actually looks better than the first big-budget reboot starring Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin. Of course, it could just be Jaime Murray vamping it up. Naked. And covered in blood for most of the movie. She sure has Colin Farrell beat, that’s fo sho. “Fright Night 2″ is not really a sequel to the first remake, it’s basically the same movie, with most of the same characters, but transplanted into a new locale and, well, remade … again? I dunno, I guess they figured the formula kind of worked, so why do a sequel, directly or indirectly, when you can just, uh, do it all over again? Yeah, I have no idea what the thinking behind this one was,...

Today's MPAA ratings bulletin is a little busier than some of those we've seen recently and even includes an R-rating for Alexander Payne's Nebraska which Paramount will be appealing. If I remember correctly there are a couple uses of the word "f**k" but nothing else. If I had a guess the R-rating for some language will soon be changed to a PG-13 rating for some strong language. We wait patiently... I posted a trailer only an hour or so ago for the Vince Vaughn dramedy Delivery Man and now it has a PG-13 rating, Ryan Coogler's excellent Fruitvale Station starring Michael B. Jordan received a not-so-surprising R-rating and the Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke thriller Getaway received a PG-13. Stuart Beattie's graphic novel adaptation I, Frankenstein starring Aaron Eckhart will be rated PG-13 when it arrives January 2014 and August opener The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones...

Remember that Fright Night sequel to the remake we told you about a few days ago? Well, it sounds like it's on track for a direct-to-dvd release, and a director is being lined up. Read on for the details!
Styd has learned that Eduardo Rodriguez is in talks to direct the flick, which will be a stand-alone story that's gearing up for an imminent shoot in Romania. Rodriguez's prior credits include El Gringo, Stash House, Curandero, and "The Circle" episode of the "Fear Itself" anthology series. It's unlikely Colin Farrell and/or Anton Yelchin will reprise their roles from last year's remake.

Apparently while $41 million worldwide box office from a $30 million dollar budget (not to mention the dollars that usually go into promoting a heavy studio title like “Fright Night”) would never be considered a “hit” in any universe, it’s enough to consider a sequel. Or at least, one that’s destined to head straight-to-dvd, which seems to be where the sequel to the recently rebooted “Fright Night” horror flick is headed. Horror site Styd says they’re hearing that the sequel is already in the works, and even has a director in Eduardo Rodriguez lined up. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Rodriguez was responsible for not one, but two After Dark Action films from earlier in the year, the Dolph Lundgren actioner “Stash House” and the Scott Adkins actioner “El Gringo”. The latter movie is way better than the former, in case you were thinking about picking them up.

Today, The Expendables 2 comes crashing into movie theaters across the country like a tank. With its Herculean roster of action legends, one name you might not yet recognize on the poster is that of Scott Adkins. We must stress, the “yet.” Adkins is currently fighting his way, literally, up the action cinema food chain. He appeared in such films as Ninja and The Bourne Ultimatum. He wowed many of us with his turn as vicious prisoner brawler Yuri Boyka in the Undisputed franchise. In Undisputed III: Redemption, he held his own with Mirageman himself, Marko Zaror. In addition to The Expendables 2, Adkins will again star alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, the “fourth” film in the franchise that was just announced as part of the second wave of this year’s Fantastic Fest. Not one to slow down, Adkins also stars in the action movie El Gringo, which...

After Dark has been busy releasing a full slate of genre fare, and today we take a look at the After Dark Action lineup which dropped no fewer than four new movies in May. They each had a brief theatrical run are now available on VOD. Read on below to hear our thoughts on movies featuring Dolph Lundgren, Scott Adkins, Jim Caviezel and more.
"El Gringo"
Martial artist Scott Adkins stars in "El Gringo" as a popular action staple, the lone man with a big bag o' money. Wandering into a small Mexican town, it's not long before an endless wave of cartoon bad guys puts a bounty on his head. He responds with fists and feet. And there's your movie!
Eduardo Rodriguez opts for spaghetti western themes and hoary character archetypes that simply reveal he's mistaken Robert Rodriguez for Sergio Leone. Freeze frames highlight colorful character names (El Jefe...

If you thought moving day sucked, wait until you move into the wrong house! That’s basically the premise of Eduardo Rodriguez’s “Stash House”. If the name Eduardo Rodriguez sounds familiar, that’s because I just reviewed “El Gringo”, which he also directed. Like “El Gringo”, “Stash House” is part of the After Dark Action movie line-up, and has the distinction of being the fourth in the five-film “festival” package that makes up the inaugural After Dark Action franchise that we’ve reviewed on the site. (The fifth movie is “The Philly Kid”, which is about boxing, and unless it has Rocky in the title, I’m not much of a boxing fan, so there you have it.) “Stash House” is not to be mistaken with “Safe House”. For one, you get Sean Faris instead of Ryan Reynolds, and while they may both be pretty boys that get all the girls,...

You might have noticed that gritty action movie heroes without names has become very popular lately. Dwayne Johnson’s Driver in “Faster”, Ryan Gosling’s Driver in “Drive”, and Mel Gibson’s Driver in “Get the Gringo” (gee, I’m sensing a pattern here). And now you can add Scott Adkins’ The Man in Eduardo Rodriguez’s “El Gringo”. When you think about it (though perhaps you shouldn’t, since it’s entirely pointless), this entire “not giving your hero a name” thing is just odd. I guess if you’re a screenwriter, it saves time not having to think up a cool name for your hero. Then again, although the hero doesn’t have a name, everyone else in the movie usually does. So yeah, you figure it out. In any case, “El Gringo” (not to be mistaken with the aforementioned “Get The Gringo” with Mel Gibson, which is...

Boom! Kapow! Blam! Like stuff blowing up? People getting punched in the face? Kicked in the head? Cool dudes with guns and fists of fury dispensing justice on the bad guys one broken nose and a bullet at a time? Heck, you’re probably the guy that the new After Dark Action festival is going for. Check out a new trailer from the fest, which assembles all the line-up’s five titles (“Dragon Eyes”, “Transit”, “El Gringo”, “Stash House”, and “The Philly Kid”) into one action-packed trailer. After Dark Action is from the same people who gave us the After Dark Films, and now they’re doing to action what they did with horror. You’ll be able to catch all five films in limited release on May 11th, but in case you can’t make it in person, no worries, they’ll also be available on VOD at the same time.

Take a gander at the poster and a blood splattering first trailer for Scott Adkins’ latest actioner, “El Gringo”, which will be taking part in the After Dark Action line-up this year. You’ll be able to catch “El Gringo”, along with all the other After Dark Action films (including “Dragon Eyes” with Cung Le and Jean-Claude Van Damme), in select theaters and on VOD starting May 11, 2012. In El Gringo, The Man (Adkins) crosses into Mexico with a satchel of $2,000,000, cash, a bloody past, and a plan to live out his remaining days on a beach. Instead, he gets stuck waiting for a bus in El Fronteras, a sleepy desert town that’s so uninviting that – forget about the ocean – he can hardly find a glass of water. Then, word of his money spreads to the El Fronteras underworld. Under sudden attack from corrupt cops, gangsters, and desperados, the Man...

After Dark Films, the same folks who bring us the After Dark Horrorfest every year, are about to branch out with another closely related genre: action. This week, in partnership with Dark Castle Home Entertainment, they have announced After Dark Action, a series of "five original, adrenaline-pumping films" that will be released simultaneously on demand and in select theatres. The movies feature an impressive line-up of stars that include Jean Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Peter Weller, James Caviezel, Harold Perrineau, Scott Adkins and Christian Slater. It certainly sounds promising, but will these movies be any better than the direct-to-video drivel that a lot of these guys have been starring in over the past decade? The full list of films is as follows: Transit – Starring James Caviezel, James Frain, Elizabeth Rohm, Harold Perrineau and Sterling Knight; and directed by Antonio Negret and written by Michael Gilvary Dragon Eyes – Starring Jean Claude Van Damme,...

Deadline has informed us that London-based Derby Street Films has just made a six-figure deal for the Jonathan Stokes script Blood Mountain, which made its way onto last year’s Black List. Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield are producing for Movie Package Co. with James Gibb and alongside executive producers Nicola Horlick, Rachel Durkin, Brookly Weavera and Stokes.
Blood Mountain is about a young Army Ranger whose team is ambushed and killed in Pakistan. He “must escort the world’s most wanted terrorist over dangerous terrain in order to bring him to justice. While being hunted by both of their enemies, they must find a way to work together in order to survive.” The script has also been “described as a gritty survival thriller with action elements.” Stokes has another action project, El Gringo, in production right now and will be hitting theaters mid July in the UK.

Well, don't actually mark your calendars unless. Because we're talking late 2013 or early 2014 at this point. In “El Gringo”, Scott Adkins plays an injured American (who is also fashionably unnamed, according to IMDb.com) who crosses the border into Mexico with a couple million dollars in cash and a plan to retire in Acapulco. Needless to say, things do not go as planned, and our nameless hero is forced to use his skills to kill a bunch of people and sleep with some beautiful senoritas. Or at least, that’s what I assume happens, given the action-packed nature of this poster and first image from the movie. “El Gringo” is directed by Eduardo Rodriguez, and co-stars Yvette Yates, Christian Slater, Erando González, Israel Islas, and Sofía Sisniega. Yes, Christian Slater is in this one, too, playing the bad guy. He does, after all, have a gun to the back of our hero’s head in the poster, so I’m assuming that makes him a bad guy.
