A Sci-Fi Odyssey Blends Time Travel with Oedipus Rex for a Gripping Debut; A Must-Watch for Sci-Fi Fans
bhargavi-652139 March 2024
For too long, Kannada movie buffs have yearned for a genuine sci-fi adventure on the big screen. Despite a few films having sci-fi elements here and there, the genre remained largely unexplored. But now, a glimmer of hope emerges with 'Blink' - a film that not only delves into the world of science fiction but also adds a touch of raw emotion and drama.

Directed by a dubantante Srinidhi Bengaluru and backed by producer Ravichandra AJ, 'Blink' defies expectations by taking a bold leap into the world of sci-fi thrillers. It's a testament to their courage to tackle such uncharted territory, especially for debutants in the industry.

One might think Blink's storyline shares similarities with Ethan Hawke's 'Predestination,' however, it can be regarded as the director's personal interpretation of the Greek hero Oedipus, a theme subtly echoed within the film.

Apoorva, our protagonist, struggles to secure a steady job due to not clearing his exams. Desperate for employment and determined to pass his exams, he embarks on a search for part-time work. Throughout his trials, he finds comfort and encouragement as he leans on the support of his love interest, Swapna. However, Apoorva's world is shaken when a mysterious revelation from an old man unveils that his father is not dead, and also reveals Apoorva's unique ability to control blinking, turning it into a heavy burden to bear.

What truly sets 'Blink' apart is its masterful handling of parallel timelines. While many films stumble over such complexities, Srinidhi effortlessly intertwines past and present, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats as they journey alongside Apoorva through twists and turns, revelations, and mysteries.

The film also shines in its technical execution. Sanjeev Jagirdar's editing flows seamlessly; in other words, the editing is in perfect apple pie order. Prasanna Kumar's live music recording significantly enhances the movie, with brilliant use of sounds and folklore songs, while the overall music composition is impressive, complemented by impactful re-recording. Avinaasha Shastry's cinematography adds depth to the narrative, particularly in scenes depicting past events, distinguished by a distinct color grading to delineate between the two timelines.

The film's ensemble cast delivers commendable performances, with Dheekshith Shetty standing out for particular praise. His effortless portrayal is sure to captivate audiences and his ability to fully embody his character is commendable. I hope to see more Kannada filmmakers recognize Dheekshith's talent and provide him with opportunities to further develop his skills. While the other characters have less screen time compared to Dheekshith, each actor, including Suresh Anagalli, Vajradheer Jain, Gopal Krishna Deshpande, Chaithra Achar, and Mandara Battalahalli, brings their characters to life with utmost dedication, contributing significantly to the story.

Overall, 'Blink' is a film worth your time and attention. Show your support to this talented team by catching the film in theaters and spreading the word about its excellence. Kannada cinema deserves more gems like 'Blink.'

An innovative attempt!
bhavana-7952215 March 2024
I absolutely loved the book references, movie references and the bgm of the movie. It's well crafted. The music, the lyrics of the songs are something I wanna listen to over and over again!

I liked how a lot of new artists were introduced in the movie.

I don't think the kannada audience in my theatre enjoyed the new concept, recieved a lot of negative comments towards the end of the movie.

I'm glad I enjoyed this movie in the theatres given that the bgm is splendid!

I could very well spot the mad love towards kannada, cinema, books and music. For someone who loves books, music and cinema, this movie was a package deal!

Wonderful Time traveling sci fi thriller
ajshreeki9 March 2024
Reall like the gut feeling of the producers to invest in such script oriented movie.

I can say, Much needed movie in the kannada cinema industry.

The story telling way is really unique.

I really liked the screenplay, background music and the way Dheekshith held his eyes without blinking in the whole story was really exceptional.

It's very clinical performance by the entire team, I really liked "Mantra maangalya" concept displayed in the story.

Really like the gut feeling of the producers to invest in such script oriented movie.

I can say, Much needed movie in the kannada cinema industry.

The story telling way is really unique.

Brilliant Movie!!
poornachandra-3023616 March 2024
The movie opens with a stage play of Oedipus, the Greek king. If you are a Greek Myth nerd, then you have already cracked the plot.

However, the brilliance of director, Srinidhi Bengaluru, is showcased in the way time loop is integrated with mythological story and adapted to Kannada in a very limited budget.

BGM is another strong pillar of the movie. It elevates the whole movie, increases the intensity of emotions and keeps audience hooked.

Crisp editing, brilliant acting and BGM keeps the audience guessing and on edge of seat throughout.

Camera work is praise worthy. Use of color pallet indicating the period is very cleanly done.

With very limited loop holes and loose ends, this movie is worth watching. This movie really needs more screens.

Not for all masses, Movie for intellects
sunilkumarprakash14 March 2024
I watched this movie on last day, last show, thought this movie won't make till next due to very poor publicity, surprisingly the theater was completely full.

It look's like the creativity has moved out from Hollywood and has entered Sandalwood, once we were watching Hollywood movies to on concept time travel🕔🚀🕢 but our own Sandalwood have started making these concepts into reality by relating to our day today life.

Amazing script, Amazing story telling,

The very hard to explain the subject of time travel and timeloop. It takes long time to develop such scripts and tough part in these movies are editing and sequencing, hats off to the director for turning such scripts into reality.

Overall it's very good movie which keeps you seated till the end.

Wonderfull Time traveling loop Sci-fi thriller
theRavandur17 March 2024
1. Script Brilliance: The script is undoubtedly one of the movie's strongest suits. While the first half may have felt a bit sluggish, it sets the stage for the explosive second half. Once the narrative gears shift, The clever use of the Greek Oedipus story as a symbolic representation in the movie is truly ingenious. The protagonist's journey mirrors that of Oedipus, adding layers of depth and complexity to the narrative. As the story unfolds, we see parallels between the two characters, with themes of fate, prophecy, and the search for truth weaving through both tales.

2. Dheekshith Shetty's Captivating Performance: Dheekshith Shetty's portrayal of Apurva is nothing short of extraordinary. He effortlessly immerses himself into the character, bringing depth and authenticity to every scene. His ability to convey a myriad of emotions with such nuance is truly commendable.

3. Gopalkrishna Deshpande's Flawless Acting: Gopalkrishna Deshpande delivers a flawless performance that leaves a lasting impression. His portrayal of Gopalkrishna Aras is a masterclass in subtlety and precision.

4. Arivu's Convincing Portrayal: Arivu, played by Vajradheer Jain, delivers a very good performance that adds depth to the ensemble cast.

5. Meaningful Use of Folk Songs: The incorporation of folk songs into the narrative adds a layer. Bagroumd score could have bean better

6. The editing in the second half of the movie is top-notch. The parallel screenplay is skillfully crafted.

Dark?????!!!!
AstroJo3 April 2024
I don't think many people here have the German series Dark. The film Blink borrows liberally from the German series that was both about time travel and travel between universes.

Anyway, about Blink. A decent effort no doubt, but the back ground score!! My God, too loud and jarring. Indian films are slowly learning the value of silence. Obviously, not this one. Literally jumping in my seat with the unexpectedly loud score. Also I didn't feel the interspersing of songs were necessary in a film of this nature. Took away from the tautness of the narrative.

Acting was good and dialogues were passable.

Some continuity issues, could have been addressed with tighter editing.

Hope the team, now a movie old, will do a better job of it during the making of their next.

Neighborhood Sci-fi
radhikanar14 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Blink - it's a Blink-And-You-Miss-It" screenplay.

As the characters travel back and forth through the labyrinth of time; the audience tags along on the roller-coaster of time-travel.

The movie handles a very convoluted subject of time-travel, time-loop and multiverse, lucidly to reach the common audience - akin to a YouTube teacher simplifying complex concepts for the students.

There are very few things that can be scientifically wrong with a time-travel movie, as there are abundant theories contradicting each other and none having been proven either way.

Of the many theories of time travel, the movie mainly banks on the Bootstrap Paradox - the person sent back in time causes an infinite loop, thereby rendering his origin as indeterminate.

Although the concept has been toyed with, in a few other time-travel movies and books, the perspicuous presentation is what makes it easy to comprehend. A couple of unfounded time-travel rules are added to lend credence to the story. The viewers are not inundated with scientific jargon or philosophical conundrums.

Surprisingly, for a movie on such an abstruse topic, it is the soothing music, songs and the boy/girl next door characters, that provide a semblance of normalcy and relatability.

Spoiler alert The climax subtly alludes to the Parallel Universe theory as a solution to the Grandfather paradox that arises due to the turn of events.

As the movie ends, it elicits mixed response from the audience - but mostly it a feeling of daze and awe. There is a lot to mull over and process, long after the show ends.

Sandalwood need more films like "BLINK"...!!!
PANDIAN12062121 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It is a matter of happiness that some of the new talents who are entering Sandalwood are not sticking to the stereotypes of the film industry and are open to innovation. The recent 'Blink' is another movie on the same path...

But the number of movies based on time travel concept in Kannada is less. Now 'Blink' is also one such a time traveling movie. Here the protagonist Apoorva (Dixit) gets stuck in time traveling and wanders between past-present-future. He learns many facts about his birth. He struggles to correct past events in his life. How is that Why? Forms the rest of plot...

Director Srinidhi Bangalore has chosen a very sensitive story for the movie 'Blink'. The equipment used for time traveling in different movies has also changed here. There is a touch of theater in the movie as the entire team comes from theater background. 'Oedipus Rex' is a clever use of the Greek play 'Blink'. As the story takes place in different time periods, the color tone of the movie changes accordingly. Special mention goes to the cinematography (Avinash Shastri), editing (Sanjeev) and music composition (Prasannakumar MS)...

The narration of the movie is not smooth and there is confusion. The director gives the audience a lot of mind- bending work to do...So, even if you pay attention while watching the movie, twists and thrills are guaranteed to be missed. In the first 20 minutes of the movie, you don't know what is happening. After that, the race goes on in the same way until the climax...

Actor Dixit Shetty in a unique role grabs everyone's attention...Dedicates himself to another different role of being torn between past-present-future. Also, Vajradhir Jain, Gopal Deshpande, Suresh Anagalli, Soumashree, Kiran Nayak who played the role of Arivu all performed well. Actress Mandara's performance as Apoorva's girlfriend is good. Actress Chaitra Achar in the role of Devaki has given a terrific performance as usual...

Overall a phenomenal attempt by a new team of passionate movie making craftsmen & we do need to encourage the upcoming talents...

A bold attempt by a true cinephile.
chand-suhas5 May 2024
Apoorva is yet to get financially stable and struggling to get a part time along with passing his final exams. He is dating Swapna, who helps him financially at times. Apoorva does feel insecure about not having a job and to add for his woes, he constantly feels being followed by a man named Arivu and even hallucinates seeing himself, but is it really his hallucination? Apoorva was raised by his single mother after his dad left him when he was five years old. The mysterious Arivu tells Apoorva that his father is still alive. How does Apoorva figure out what's happening with him and will he be able to figure out the mystery behind his father's disappearance? Is Arivu really trustworthy, forms rest of the story.

This is a film truly made by a cinephile and there are cinematic reference galore throughout the film. The director even acknowledges the films he took inspiration from. Merging Oedipus Rex with sci-fi time travel narrative is not an easy task and that too for debut director. On that front, it is a brave attempt which muse be lauded. To speak of what didn't work for me was the different actors cast in the same character as the timeline progresses and it just wasn't justifiable casting though the actors did their job well. I usually refrain from mentioning editing in reviews, but here better editing was required especially in the first half.

Even the inspirations taken, those aren't easy to sell it to the audience. Here the director gets the support of his able cast who carry the complex story forward. The usage of Janapada songs was definitely impactful while the couple of other compositions were fine. The main focus of the narrative should have been between Apoorva and Arivu from early on but first half mere gives the glimpse of it with Apoorva chasing him. It is only in the third act where these two characters flourish together and that throwback to Oedipus Rex play comes out effectively. Overall, this must be watched for the attempt and to support the talent that dares to think outside the routine.

A must watch,sci-fi,music is great
gurukeerthi13 March 2024
Initially was sceptical about the movie publicised as sci fi musical but after watching I am stunned the young director Srindhi Bengaluru had hit it out of the park by his writing movie references subtly in the background Music is awesome especially folk style easily synchronising with scenes editing is fast and crisp Deekshith shetty and all the actors had done great job Climax is bang on ringing in us even after coming out of the theatre The movies with time loop concept are very rare in kannada industry so one should grab it when it comes so go and watch

Are we in the time loop too is the last question remains with us.

First of its kind Sci-Fi Script in Kannada, on par with Lucia with Brilliant Acting and Great Music!
sunilnl-5606912 March 2024
I don't usually write reviews for the movies I watch in theaters. I only give ratings but man, this movie compelled me to do so. I have created an IMDb account to review this movie.

What an experience it was, a brilliant concept ever touched in KFI and well executed and with great acting and great music.

I had booked for some other movie before and I had to cancel that in last moment for some reason. And then went to PVR global mall and booked for blink after watching YouTube reviews.

Right from the first scene till the end, this movie gets you hooked to the screen and it doesn't let you BLINK and I'm not even exaggerating. You should watch it in theatres to experience this feeling.

The movie is based on concept of time travel and involves multiple timelines and it is a story of lead character Apoorva played by Dheekshit Shetty. If I tell anymore details it will spoil the movie for the readers.

The Main Strengths of the movie:

Story and Direction: The script was solid and so is the direction. The director answers all your questions as the screenplay progresses and debut director Srinidhi Bengaluru has written a most engaging sci-fi concept and he is more than successful in delivering such concept convincingly. No where I felt, this lacks logic or that does not happen or they took cinematic liberty etc. Each scene and character made sense.

Cinematography: For the smaller budget the team had they had pulled off some great shots, some wide shots and I liked the color grading too.

Music: Music is by Prasanna Kumar MS is apt for this movie and it is his first feature length film but it doesn't look like this is his debut in a movie. For movies like this bgm and songs plays major role and rightly for this movie it fit perfectly. Right amount of bgm and loved the use of some old kannada songs and janapada songs in between. Nothing felt forced, even each bgm felt it was apt and elevated the experience of watching the scenes.

Acting: I have kept this point for last as a lot to be spoken on this. When I decided to watch this one out of sudden plan, I knew it was Dheekshits movie and its a sci-fi and has Chaitra Achar as well. I didn't know any of the rest of the cast, almost all of them are new names. But when I watching I could see only the characters and felt "wow, this is like I'm experience them in live" such finest acting by each of them. Especially our hero Dheekshit and he had lived the character "Apoorva". I have seen Dia, Dasara and clearly know he is a good actor. But his acting in blink makes him a brilliant actor. He is very matured subtle actor and knows exactly how to pull those emotional scenes. When his character gets traumatized in some scenes, I could literally the pain of that character. Such was his acting and he completely owned and lived that character as Apoorva and is a perfect choice for this role and I have become a fan!!

So are the female leads, Mandara Battalahalli and Chaitra Achar and other characters played their parts aptly with conviction which helps the movie to look real and characters felt real and you are able to empathize with them.

I have come out of theatre with so much satisfaction and pride feeling that our new age KFI filmmakers are exploring new concepts and successfully achieving it. In terms of Script, this is on par with Lucia.

Unfortunately this movie had way lesser shows in multiplex than other Telugu, Hindi movies which were anyways running empty or with lower ratings. It was very hard to find this movie in BMS in the movie pages unless you search for it.

This requires huge promotion and word of mouth publicity to make this movie reach a larger audience all over India.

I was lucky to meet the movie makers Director, Srinidhi and Music Director, Prasanna after the show and I learnt that they have released it only in Karnataka as they are a small team and movie is completed in 2.5 years.

Movies like these should be widely promoted in every language as possible so that it could a recognition and eventually find more screens and reach larger audience. Only then, we get to more such good quality content movies in Kannada.

I'm going to watch it again and going to suggest this movie to my friends who haven't seen it yet.

Please support this movie, watch it in your nearest shows and share your reviews among your friends, if possible with friends from other states/languages, so it could reach its wider audience as this movie deserves wider audience.

Thank you,if you've read till here. Now go and watch the movie and I'm certain you will have a wonderful theatre experience 😉

Thanks! But no thanks.. Warning: Spoilers
WHAT I FEEL: I did watch it patiently. I like parts of it. But the movie still feels very amateurish and unfulfilling in its on-screen execution. I appreciate the effort, the story is well planned and connected convincingly, I would not say the same for on-screen execution. The time travel bits and vfx is comparable to Balveer TV series on chintu tv, I mean there is no problem with mediocre vfx. But sadly, it is not done intelligently to make the effects look quirky and fun. The plot is PreDestination, to say - "heavily inspired and borrowed". Those who haven't seen it may find the end very intelligent and unexpected.

THE GOOD: 1. Happy to see a kannada film taking sci-fi genre seriously. It is just pure fun to see new genuine attempts in kannada to entertain and engage audience with intelligent scripts and sci fi stories.

2. The Time-Travel Plot is well rounded enough to make sense at the end. No hanging open threads. The events are sensibly connected ( loosely ofcourse with convenient dialogues many times.)

3. Kudos to the producers for backing this attempt.

THE BAD: 1. The acting performance of Deekshik felt pretty underwhelming in many scenes for me personally. I like the subtleness in the scenes showing everyday life, but the emotionally complex and anguish scenes feel let down.

2. In the preroll - "I steal from every single film ever made- Quentin Tarantino ". And the director of this movie is like "I steal from that one film I saw that day". PreDestination is that film. The director does manage to knit an indianized story around Predestination. The grandfather paradox and Predestination plot were unnecessary I strongly feel. The movie plot holds quite well by itself and could have ended on a simpler backstory of timetravel and interconnected events. The aspect of Predestination did not bring the sparkle of intelligence and surprise instead made the end disgusting and unpleasant.

3. Convenient dialogues here and there to support the plot even though the dialogues feel untimely and artificial. The scene of Arivu staying in the home of a stranger. I really can't understand how a family trusts a complete stranger to that extent in such a short span.

4. The dialogues of the mother when Apoorva asks about his father on the phone feel rushed and for plot sake. The first person narration from the protagonist made the movie less interesting. The spoon feeding from the protagonist in the first half was unnecessary.

5. Rough and Amateurish visual presentation. Folk lores, cultural elements make an interesting addition, but do not add a layer of plot through it like in Ulidavaru Kandante.
