A solid return.
Sleepin_Dragon18 June 2023
A talented free runner is killed, and another badly injured, Van Der Valk and his new team members are hunting down a dangerous sniper, but why is the sniper targeting free runners?

It's a pretty good return, an enjoyable start to the third series. Let's be honest this is as far away from any of the original Van Der Valk run as you could possibly imagine, it feels very modern, very up to date.

The case was interesting, and allowed for some nice visuals, I've always been fascinated by free runners, some talent on show here.

Obviously there's more going on than meets the eye, and the case allows for a good introduction for the two new characters, in come Eddie Suleman and Citra Li, out go de Vries and Cloovers, I liked the changes personally.

If I'm honest, I felt like it was drawn out in parts, some scenes were overlong, but it was engaging enough. I thought I'd figured out whodunnit, but there's a definite twist near the end.

Marc Warren is definitely growing more so into the part, and for me he was the standout, some of the supporting actors were a little bit off par.

7/10.

One of the best

Both segments watched on the Passport streaming service. A fascinating well-filmed freerunning sport, not too-well known in the US. A laid-back Marc Warren, funny and smart in the role. Two likeable, photogenic new members on the team, Django Chan-Reeves and Azan Ahmed, with impressive brains. Rita Bernard-shaw (British) and Simone Giel (Dutch) impressively good in their roles. Some spectacular Amsterdam scenery, especially from drones, the shore of the huge inland IJmeer (slightly below sea level) was used well. Amsterdam looked wealthy and well-run. Dutch systems were made to look good, not the case always in Series 1. And contrary to some "Its all about me-me-me!" 1, 2 and 3 star reviews on the main page, the Pro level of IMDB describes extensive Dutch professionals' help. What's not to like?!

Why is it in Amsterdam? Well, check the title, big clue?!

Some very silly comments on here, with a few accurate points too.

Why in Amsterdam? Well, I think the original series, and the books, might be a clue?

And it's more exotic to a British audience than say, Barnsley, Crawley, Llandudno or Motherwell?

Why don't the people speak Dutch? Well, much research says the viewers really don't like subtitles!!

Other points re this episode one, well, the new characters didn't add much, I'd say the ones replaced were more interesting. The story was frankly barmy, especially how the damaged girl walked out of hospital, was kidnapped by the villain, and vanished without trace despite the place being surrounded by police.

But we did see an interesting and very sexy former partner of moody VDV, maybe she'll be back in the other 2 episodes? And the sidekick gets some snappy lines as in the previous shows.

Hopefully the next 2 shows have a less far-fetched plot?!

Van der Valk returns for a third series with two new members for his team. Impulsive marksman Eddie Suleman and tech specialist Citra Li.

They soon end up in the world of Parkour. A free runner Casper Yuliani is shot dead by a sniper, his girlfriend is injured.

Another man who was running with Casper becomes a suspect only he was also injured.

Piet van der Valk finds out that free runners were used by a gang to break into containers and maybe even to act as drug couriers.

When there is another death, it seems there was another motive for the killings.

Overlong and insipid. There was not enough story here. You had free runners who are being chased one minute, then they just come to a stop because Van der Valk shows up.

I found the story to be rather ridiculous.

More like a boring American police procedural.
Avidviewer-028471 August 2023
After two solid seasons of intriguing plots, well written scripts and strong cast, we have Season 3 which is boring and filled with a formulaic plot and cliches. Chris Murray the writer has a new series "Cannes Confidential" which is good, I think "Van Der Valk" got farmed out to a writer or writers who watch too many formulaic American police procedurals. I strongly suspect a lot of Season 3 was filmed in the UK, not in Amsterdam.

Luke Allen-Gale and Elliot Barnes-Worrell were very good in the first two seasons, they can act and they provided the comedic elements that were key. Azan Ahmed and Django Chan-Reeves don't fit and don't have the acting skills. Marc Warren and Maimie McCoy aka Piet and Lucienne seem to slip into the roles of parents, this isn't a family drama this is a police procedural.

The first two seasons focused in the very interesting crimes, who was dating who or sleeping with was a very minor part which is what it should be. Season 3 is starting out as a huge disappointment, I fear this is the last season.

A spot of brother

There is so much to say about this but none of it is positive.

I know it is not actually made by ITV but the majority of the cast is British so why has it been shown in Australia first?

Secondly, why make a show in Amsterdam?

There are plenty of British cities that would have loved the exposure for a detective drama.

One positive is it is actually filmed where it is set unlike many british dramas these days which seem to be made ireland, Malta, Spain or Turkey.

Back to the moaning. Why is everyone speaking English? Surely they should be speaking Dutch. They don't even put on Dutch accents.

Finally, two cast members are changed without mention (don't worry folks the dog is still there and steals the show).

I have been watching glossy dramas such as Citadel and Ted Lasso of late so it is strange not to see women parading around in Louboutin heels like the ones ScotsDee wears on her twitter page (and little else!).

A boring and predictable episode which could have been made in half the time.

Soo wrong

Warning: Spoilers
What's the matter with the people who commission TV drama? This is just a bunch of chliches and PC box-ticking.

1. Why set a british production in Amsterdam, with not a single actor speaking dutch?

2. Why so woke and predictable? A moody, msyterious loner of a DI with a quriky old car. An asian woman with pronoun fixation and a photographic memory, an arabic vegan with a dark history, a lesbian female lead, a drunk pathologist wo plays the saxophone at work, a homeless character...

3. Why such a lame plot? Freerunners training to get in to shippping containers... what about using a ladder to climb up?

Revive Hustle instead, if you feel the need to keep Marc Warren occupied.

Don't listen to any cobblers ITV try to feed you about this show returning based on 'popular demand'.

The truth is that this third run of the rebooted/reimagined Van Der Valk has been in the can for ages, as the actors mentioned it as being done when promoting the second series.

So ITV were always going to show this regardless of whether it was popular or not.

This is middling drama, even by ITV's 'pump them out, hope nobody notices the repetition' business model.

It's not overly well written or performed. It's vanilla ice cream when you can't find anything better.

It'll get solid ratings though and probably run forever.
