Still The All Time Game Show Champ 50 Years
DKosty12318 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Drew Carey is a smooth host. What has changed is he does not have quite the experience hosting this as Bob Barker did. When Barker got to this show he had the interactions with the audience down from many years of hosting Truth or Consequences. While Drew gets a bit of that in, if you go back to the days of Barker you can tell what is missing, a bit of audience spark. This is not Carey's fault as much as a couple of things Barker did not have.

(1) Covid-19 which has limited the live audience which is an automatic spark reduction in itself.

(2) Production differences- Freemantle has taken over and try as they might recently they seem to have lost some of the magic the Goodsen-Toddman days of production had. Goodsen was a master game show producer who really made many game shows appealing. Still, this format is on 50 years and going on.

If you don't believe it, try watching Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, The View, & the Talk. Then watch this show. It is immediately evident that the happy people on this show are much more pleasant to watch.

TPIR is still a happiness high. The show always has the contestants, and none of these have the problems of cheating on this loved ones, not knowing who the father is, and thankfully none of these folks need a final word from Jerry Springer. Judge Springer does not object to the content of this program.

I went to a couple of TPIR tapings with Bob Barker years ago, the happiness on screen is on the street waiting to get in. Comrades and friends were formed in that line. We rooted for each other in the studio. I still see some of that magic in todays contestants.
