In a move to consolidate its bullishly expanding audiovisual industry, Spain’s Canary Islands have just scrapped a prior €50 million ($53.5 million) cap on total annual tax incentives tapped by movies and series shooting in the archipelago.
Announced April 30, the ground-breaking measure was applauded by local industry heavyweights who have been lobbying national and regional authorities, “This couldn’t be better news for the Canarian audiovisual sector, and by extension, for the Spanish audiovisual sector,” said Rubén Zarauza, president of the Audiovisual Cluster of the Canary Islands, and co-head of Amuse Studios, the Spanish branch of France’s Amuse Animation group.
“What we have achieved with this [tax break] cap removal is greater peace of mind for producers and other players in the sector,” Zarauza added.
Pablo Hernández, president of Zec, the Canary Islands’ tax Special Zone, offered to regions on the periphery of the European Union, echoed Zarauza: “The tax credit in...

Justin Lin is ready to announce his next project, Stakehorse. Is it about a horse made of wooden stakes? Doubtful. Sources say the forthcoming crime thriller is like Ben Affleck’s 2010 banger The Town. The screenplay hails from Justin Piasecki, with a plot revolving around a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle patching up criminals who need medical attention under the table.
After shooting several chapters of the Fast and Furious saga and more, Lin is a clever and creative director with a sleek style all his own. In addition to directing Stakehorse, Lin will produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment studio with Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures. Perfect Storm’s Andrew Schneider and Sal Gatdula will exec produce.

Milla Jovovich returns to the genre she knows so well with World Breaker. She stars opposite Luke Evans from Fast & Furious 6 and Dracula Untold. Brad Anderson is in the director’s chair for this science-fiction film. Anderson is known for such bleak projects as Session 9, The Machinist (which famously had Christian Bale lose a scary amount of weight prior to playing Batman) and Transsiberian. He has been dabbling in TV over the recent years, having directing for shows like Titans, The Man in the High Castle and Peacemaker.
The synopsis for World Breaker, according to Deadline, reads,
“Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break,...

Introducing the Fast & Furious Franchise’s Gravity-Defying Antics When it comes to the Fast & Furious franchise, we’re not exactly in it for a physics lecture. They’re the cinematic equivalent of a deep-fried candy bar—terrible for you, but oh so good. Dwayne Johnson is not only one of the most talented actors in Hollywood but also one of the highest-paid ones. It is known that any franchise or movie starring the actor will be highly entertaining even if it is not a masterpiece like some of his other movies. This is the reason why he has turned out to be one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
Over the years, Johnson has gained the reputation of an action star. This persona suits him well, thanks to his buffed-up appearance and wrestling background. He began his acting career when he was still wrestling and started acting in earnest when he was away from WWE with the 2001 movie The Mummy Returns. In all these years, he has managed to accumulate a net worth that could easily make some of the biggest actors jealous.

Apple TV+ has added more than 50 licensed movies included in the price of the subscription service — the streamer’s biggest collection of back-catalog studio content to date. But the third-party titles will only be available for a limited time.
Apple TV+’s lineup has mostly comprised original series, movies and specials commissioned for the platform (as well as a smattering of live MLB games). Now it has added a bouquet of older film favorites to the mix, including popular and award-winning movies like “Titanic,” “300,” “Argo,” “Black Hawk Down,” “The Bodyguard,” “Jurassic World,” “Gravity,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “Kill Bill” Volume 1 and 2, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the original 2004 “Mean Girls” and “Zoolander.”
The movies are listed in a new section on the service labeled “Great Movies on Apple TV+” — however, the service notes, these are available for a “limited time.

The move could signal a shift in strategy by Apple to finally incorporate more library titles into its catalog.
Is Apple TV+ finally getting non-original titles in its streaming library? Yes, at least temporarily, at any rate, as the streamer has added a total of 51 movies to its streaming catalog, spanning every genre and including some true blockbusters. Apple stresses that these titles will only be available for a limited time, but it could be providing a glimpse into its own future with the additions. Having long focused on high-quality originals without the studio archives or licensing library of its competitors, Apple V+ has been a somewhat different type of streamer since it launched in November 2019.

The Fast and Furious franchise has featured some pretty big stars since the early days of the street racing crew stealing TV/Vcr combos. Check out the later entries and you’ll see Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and plenty of others. Three women live a quiet life amongst the luscious trees of the Canary Islands in the first trailer for Macu Machín’s Berlinale Forum entry “The Undergrowth.” Croatia’s Splitscreen is handling sales on the title.
The title also represents the latest from Tenerife-based El Viaje Films, quickly building as one of the Canary Islands top fiction producers, having co-produced Theo Court’s Chilean Oscar entry “White on White.”
It was also recently behind titles such as Venice-selected “They Carry Death” and Locarno prize-winning “Dead Slow Ahead.”
Machín’s feature debut is a personal affair, with the filmmaker chronicling the routine of her mother and two aunts as they finally try to settle the distribution of their family inheritance after years of debate. In the background to the family dispute, nature seeps in, the documentary juxtaposing the lulling rhythms of the island with the eruption of long-held grievances between the sisters.

This episode of Revisited was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Adam Walton and Chris Bumbray, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Over-the-top action sequences. Bone-crunching fights between titans of the action genre. A popular horror director getting his chance to make a massive-budget blockbuster. Fast & Furious 7 (watch it Here) brings all of those elements to the table. But it’s primarily remembered for being a production that was disrupted by tragedy. And we’re going to look into how it all played out in this episode of Revisited.
Universal Pictures doesn’t have a lot of major blockbuster franchises. In 2012, Jurassic Park had been dormant for a decade and the Bourne Identity movies had lost Jason Bourne. So they really only had Fast and Furious. It makes sense that while they were sending the sixth movie out into the world,...

The "Fast & Furious" saga is some of the most fun you can have with a movie franchise. Where most Hollywood properties make empty promises about diversity and inclusiveness, this is a franchise so diverse it actually just makes every actor in Hollywood Latino whether they want to be or not (in a good way). Sure, on the surface they seem like silly movies about cars and scantily-clad women looking at cars, but it is that -- and so much more.
Part of the ridiculous allure of this franchise is how earnest it is. The theme of family is more than a meme, it's the movie series' driving force. And then there's the nonsensical timeline and naming conventions for these films, which make them a hilarious puzzle to try and figure out. The timeline circles back on a whim, constantly re-contextualizing previous events and introducing and reintroducing characters and plot...

The Fast & Furious movies saga, a robust international action series created by Gary Scott Thompson, has proven to be much more than its humble beginnings as a street racing storyline in 2001. Who would have predicted the evolution from gritty street races to the cinematic spectacle of dragging bank vaults across the asphalt, airborne cars, submarine escapes, and speculative alien encounters? However, following the franchise’s timeline can feel like being in a high-speed chase.
To experience the Fast & Furious events as they chronologically unfold, the journey begins with the first two installments: The Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious. Unexpectedly, the third in the series, Tokyo Drift, doesn’t follow immediately after, as it’s set further down the timeline. Instead, viewers should pivot to Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 before returning to Tokyo Drift.

When Fast Five came out in the summer of 2011, it was a smash hit. While people expected the franchise to do well, no one thought that the film would be so big that it would turn what had, up to then, been a series of glorified B-movies into the next major tentpole franchise. To capitalize on the film’s success, Fast & Furious 6 (whose on-screen title is simply Furious 6) was immediately put into production. Director Justin Lin and star Vin Diesel had already planned an epic conclusion for what they hoped would be the next film before Fast Five came out. With their sequel now a reality, Lin and his crew opted to make this an even bigger film than its predecessor, with their home studio, Universal, now granting them the kind of tentpole movie budgets reserved for the 007 and Mission: Impossible franchises, as Fast Five had...

Over five low-budget box office hits and a two-season TV series, “The Purge” saga — which portrays a not-too-distant-future America where all crimes, including murder, are legal for one night a year in order to satiate a bloodthirsty public — swelled into a $450 million franchise. But the first chapter was almost never made.
While the film became the defining hit of writer and director James DeMonaco’s career, he says the script was passed over “40-50 times” for being seen as “too anti-American.”
“I had this little, strange, dark indictment of American gun culture,” he said. “I hate guns. To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night where everyone was armed and it was legal to use these firearms. To me, there was nothing scarier than that notion.”
Ultimately, the film got the attention of super-producer Jason Blum, who “saw something bigger in the conceit,” said DeMonaco. Soon,...

Update: Apart from big new opener The Little Mermaid, which we detailed here, this weekend was notable for propelling Universal’s Fast X past the $500M mark globally, and Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to over $730M worldwide.
The Fast & Furious franchise had, earlier this week, crossed $7B globally while the latest installment drove across the half-century mark during the current frame to become the No. 3 biggest studio title of 2023 both worldwide and internationally. The split so far is $399.3M offshore and $108M domestic for a total $507.26M global. The overseas weekend was $87.3M in 84 markets, a 58% drop.
Through Sunday, the performance is above F9 and Hobbs & Shaw, and just below F8 and F7 in the same markets This excludes China where FX has surpassed the lifetimes of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, GOTG2, Ant-Man and Justice League. It is one of...

When Justin Lin stepped away from "Fast X" citing that age-old excuse of "creative differences," Universal was forced to hire a replacement immediately. At the time, shooting on the 10th "Fast and Furious" movie had just got underway, with Lin leaving days after the cameras started rolling on a film that would form part of one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood history.
Lin had overseen multiple films in the "Fast" saga, from "Tokyo Drift" to "Fast & Furious," "Fast Five," "Fast and Furious 6," and "F9." He was the man in charge as the franchise shifted away from street racing and towards the all-out action blockbuster series it's known as today. So to put it mildly, when Universal drafted in "Clash of the Titans" director Louis Leterrier, he had a hell of a task ahead of him.

You’d think the box office “Fast X” is pulling in China — $77 million in the first five days — would be encouraging news. It’s the best-performing Hollywood movie in a market that’s been resistant to the American dream factory’s charms as of late, and the haul for the latest installment of Universal’s “Fast Saga” nearly matched the five-day domestic total of $81 million.
But that ignores a critical factor: The “Fast & the Furious” series has been bigger in China than in the U.S. since 2015, routinely earning 25%-30% of its global box office in the country and arguably making it the emblem of Hollywood’s ambitions for one of the world’s largest and increasingly affluent pool of moviegoers.
Some plugged-in observers are holding out hope that China will snap back and become a steady contributor to theatrical revenue once more. “I don’t think it’s back to normal,...

The Fast Saga has always played loose with continuity. Perhaps more than any other modern franchise, "Fast & Furious" knows that continuity is not nearly as important as the rule of cool. Characters can come back from the dead at any time, events from the past are recontextualized on the regular to reveal new information only relevant now. Nothing is off limits, everything can change, and mistakes or irregularities don't matter as long as the now is cool and exciting.
In typical fashion for the franchise, "Fast X" brings back people we thought were dead — physically or metaphorically. Near the end of the movie, we see none other than Gal Gadot's Gisele, back from the dead, and apparently working for Cipher on her submarine. Then there's the actual credits scene, which arguably pulls off the biggest magic trick the franchise has...

It's clear with each new addition in the "Fast and Furious" franchise that these movies are about family, not physics. What began as "Point Break" with cars has evolved into the ever-more-ridiculous exploits of a super spy team stacked with heroes — and villains and villains turned heroes. From racing the streets with the all-powerful Nos to racing into space, this saga left plausibility in their rearview many moons ago. Luckily, for the most part, the movies are held together thanks to the chemistry of the "Fast Family" and action sequences so knowingly bonkers the audience feels in on the joke. Back in 2001, when the first movie of the Fast franchise, The Fast and the Furious, hit theaters, hardly anyone could have predicted that a simple story revolving around a cat-and-mouse game between a bunch of street racers/DVD player hijackers and a bright-eyed rookie cop would generate a multibillion-dollar-earning franchise a decade down the line. But here we are all these years later, with ten movies released as part of three trilogies and the first chapter of the upcoming trilogy, Fast X, already raking in big numbers at the box office. While the NoS-pumped physical law-defying campy fun doesn’t seem to be restrained by brakes or clutches, the makers have charted out the ending of the franchise, and the aftermath of Fast X has provided enough hints that will help viewers assess what the final lap will look like. We would like to discuss it briefly, thereby joining the...

When 2019's "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" was first announced, it seemed like a way for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to pull a fast one on the franchise that he was previously part of only as a member of the ensemble. With this spin-off film, it appeared that Johnson was making a bid to move his character of Dss Agent Luke Hobbs into his own multi-movie franchise — and, as extra insurance, he brought reformed "Furious 7" villain Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) along with him.
Though that may have indeed been the idea behind the conception of "Hobbs & Shaw," the movie proved itself to be firmly entrenched within the "Fast & Furious" franchise in many ways. For one, the film features Hobbs, Shaw, and others performing incredible feats of strength and insanity in and out of various vehicles. For another,...

At the climax of Justin Lin's 2011 film "Fast Five," Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker) break into a bank in Rio de Janeiro with their souped-up muscle cars, attach cables to a massive bank vault belonging to a dangerous crime lord, and haul the entire 12-ton vault out into the street. Their cars are powerful enough that they can tow the vault at high speeds through the streets. Dom and Brian drive off, careening around corners, swinging the disembodied vault into storefronts or into pursuing police vehicles.

“Fast X,” the 10th installment in Universal’s high-octane franchise, powered to $320 million worldwide, including an uninspired $67.5 million in its domestic debut. It secured the second-biggest global opening weekend of the year following another Universal title, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($377 million).
Even though “Fast X” arrived on the higher end of projections, the action-adventure saga has been experiencing diminishing returns in North America. In terms of opening weekend ticket sales, the 10th chapter landed behind the latest entry, 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga,” which kicked off to $70 million. And that was at a time when Covid era restrictions meant only 80% of theaters were open and attendance hadn’t yet rebounded. Pre-pandemic “Fast” installments were far bigger in their starts, including 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious” ($98 million debut), 2015’s “Furious 7” (a series-high $148 million debut) and 2013’s “Fast and Furious 6” ($97 million debut).

Buoyed by over-the-top stunts, the "Fast & Furious" franchise has never been subtle about much of anything, and this is especially true for retcons. Over the course of ten popcorn flicks, the series has introduced more than one long-lost #family member. In "Fast & Furious 6," Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw (first known as Ian Shaw) materialized as the brother of Luke Evans' villain, Owen Shaw. Just two years ago, "F9" revealed that the head of the family, Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto, had his own long-lost brother, Jakob (John Cena).
The trend continues in "Fast X," which, as others have pointed out, really missed out on the chance to call itself "Fast10 Your Seatbelts." The tenth "Fast & Furious" film has earned praise for the way it seamlessly integrates Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes — a contender for the franchise's best baddie, writes /Film's Rafael Motamayor — into footage from "Fast Five.

Louis Leterrier's new film, "Fast X," is wonderfully enjoyable hooey stuffed with explosions, chases, and acts of vehicular manslaughter that defy the laws of physics. It also boasts one of the largest celebrity casts in the "Fast and Furious" series, assembling most all of the familiar faces from previous chapters, as well as a few Oscar winners to boot; the film stars Rita Moreno, Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, and Helen Mirren. All told, there are at least 17 main characters. Also, in addition to Vin Diesel and his crew, the filmmakers also included several notable cameos from "Furious" actors who haven't been seen in a few films.

"There's no place like home." "May the Force be with you." "The stuff dreams are made of." The greatest lines of dialogue in motion picture history often have one thing in common, and that's no matter what year they came out, no matter what their story is about, when you hear that line you think of that movie.
Anyone can say something smart or funny -- it's the context that makes a great line memorable. When we believe in the characters and we're immersed in that world, we pay attention to what they're saying and we remember when they say something great. The last line in Billy Wilder's "Sunset Blvd" resonates because "Alright Mr. Demille, I'm ready for my close-up" is creepy and weird after everything we've just been through. If you overheard someone say the exact same thing on the street it would have no power.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers are ahead for “Fast X,” which is now playing in theaters.
“You believe in ghosts?” Agent Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) asks at the end of 2011’s “Fast Five.” She’s just presented agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) with a surveillance photo of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), who was believed dead after a horrific crash in the fourth film, 2009’s “Fast & Furious.”
With one mid-credits coda, the “Fast” franchise established that if you don’t see a body, no one is really dead.
(In fact, Rodriguez recently revealed that she didn’t know about the third-act twist until she saw “Fast Five” in theaters. “I’m in Paris. I’m like, ‘Oh, hell no,'” she said in Feb. at the “Fast X” trailer launch event, explaining that she called producer and star Vin Diesel right away. “I find out by going to the movies, Vin?” she asked him.

It's been just over 20 years, but the "Fast and Furious" saga is running out of road, and "Fast X" marks the beginning of the end. After going from small scale robberies to international espionage and even heading to space, there are not many other places to go, so "Fast X" involves a very "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" plot that finds the family on the run from their biggest threats yet -- The Agency that once shielded them, and also a live-action gender-fluid Bugs Bunny in the form of Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes.
Dante is the best villain the "Fast and Furious" franchise has got to date, and the best part of the movie. He is not just another guy who wants to rule the world, but one deeply obsessed with the events of "Fast Five," one who takes things personally and will stop at nothing until he destroys Dom and everything he loves.

Fast X is an incredibly dumb time at the movies. Not just in an F9 “they took a car to space” kind of dumb, but in a more fundamental Fate of the Furious “why did they name the baby Brian like he’s not still alive?” kind of way. There’s always room for big, dumb entertainment at the multiplex, especially the kind of pure, mind-numbing escapism at which this improbable billion-dollar franchise has excelled. Since the franchise apex of Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 it’s hard not feeling the constant drag of diminishing returns. An ever-evolving cast of regulars starts to feel like too much baggage even for this family––especially when they don’t even stay dead or are treated as goners even though they’ve just “retired.” A great summer actioner can be big and dumb, but it can’t also be clunky. Thankfully,...

Serialized storytelling, whether on TV or on film, can be a source of exciting possibilities, but continuity and "canon" can also be restrictive. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is arguably the biggest franchise in movie history, but it is also a bit chaotic. There are elements that are just left hanging (remember the giant Celestial corpse sticking out of the ocean that everyone just ignores?) and there are now so many entries to the MCU that keeping it all straight and trying to add to the larger mythology is getting increasingly harder. This is why the best parts of the MCU in recent years just ignore the larger canon and focus on their own standalone story.
Likewise, DC movies have spent years attempting to both tell standalone stories in the universe Zack Snyder created starting with "Man of Steel" while slightly interconnecting many of them, resulting in an incomprehensible mess.

For over two decades now, the Fast Saga_, trashing the ancient city of Rome with a giant flaming bomb.
But, the thing with going a quarter-mile at a time is, sometimes you realise you’ve gone a quarter-mile in the wrong direction – and a quick fix is needed to keep everything just about on-course. Through the Fast & Furious franchise, characters have been brought back from the dead, timelines have shifted around, destinies have been rewritten, and never-spoken-of siblings have come to light, all in the service of – as Vin Diesel once so wisely put it – the movies. So, in honour of Fast X hitting the big screen – with yet more characters who are blood relations of familiar faces, people you thought were long dead, and revisiting of scenes from previous films – strap in for a Nos-boosted tour through the Saga’s most spectacular (and spectacularly stupid) rewrites.

Fast X was revving its engine and came off the line with $7.5 million in Thursday previews according to Deadline. The tenth entry in the Vin Diesel family saga with varying title wordplay is projected to see upwards of $60 million domestically this weekend and is projected to rake in $235 million for the global take. Compared to the previous entry’s Thursday preview total, Fast X has bested F9: The Fast Saga by nearly half a million when the ninth film would collect $7.1 million on its Thursday preview. Although, F9 would notably be released as one of the first big titles when movie theaters opened back up after Covid had shut them down for a spell.
