Bigger budget than most indies, but the usual problems

Warning: Spoilers
THE SUMMONING is an indie horror flick with a better budget than usual, although the paucity of imagination still affects the quality of the finished product. This one's about the usual group of teens heading out into the woods, hoping to take part in an all-night party, instead falling foul of some lurking Satanists planning to use them as sacrificial victims. Although this is quite well put together, it has unrealistic scenes, a silly ritual, airhead characters, and too much lame sex talk.

Warning: Spoilers
A group of six friends get lost on the way to a college Barn Party. The wander about the forest of Longwood, Florida (a real place and not just a gag name) and run into a group of Satanists. And we know they are Satanists because of the ugly contacts.

The ugly contacts, voice distorter, and CG effects in need of improvement was the special effects. Too much of the film is the group riding in a car and roving the woods. The Satanists walked upright but ran hunched over. They sometimes ran in fast motion, but it still took a while for them to catch someone nearby. Apparently TV director/writer Curtis Schultz didn't mind the inconsistencies as long as he created the scene he wanted and got almost "90 minutes in the can." On the plus side, the equipment was good. The camera angles and framing worked as did the sound track. The dialogue was half stupid as was side kick Drew (Flavio Milicchio) and some of the film just didn't make sense like the opening scene with the woman (Lainie Kates) screaming for help altering her captors of her location. And I am not exacting sure why Jared (Brian C. Chenworth) preferred the company of Drew to Casey (Shanna Mclaughlin). What good lines they managed to script were poorly delivered so they never landed.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Elaine Hoxie)
