Murder at the roll of the dice
Tweekums28 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opens with a new murderer appearing on the streets of London; this one is rather strange; he started of straying graffiti on a car at a petrol station then moved on to vandalising another car. When the owners confronted him one of them ended up blind the other was killed. Luther was meant to be having a day off so he could help Jenny find a job but is soon on the case. It doesn't take the team all that long to come to the belief that the killer is deciding what actions to take based off the roll of a die. They also realise that now his twisted game has started it won't end till he is dead or caught. As if this wasn't enough for Luther, criminal Toby Kent is pressuring Luther to help him again saying he will harm Jenny if he fails to do as he is told.

This was another exciting episode; the crime involving the dice-roller was both disturbing and bizarre and Luther's dealings with Toby lead to some particularly tense moments when it looks as if he might get caught. As always Idris Elba does a good job as Luther and Aimee-Ffion Edwards is good as relatively new character Jenny. The end of the episode provided a nice twist that I hadn't seen coming meaning this won't be the one part story I thought it was going to be. The only real disappointment in an otherwise gripping episode was the lack of Alice; I do hope we haven't seen the last of her.

Horrific, but great.

Customers at a petrol station stand in horror, and watch as a round man causes mass destruction, and major harm to anyone in front of him.

Toby continues to pull Luther's strings, as Jenny chooses to stay safely in his care.

That is one of the most shocking, dramatic, unnerving opening sequences, I can ever recall, it's very disturbing, you could be forgiven for saying it's a bit sick, even a little bit too much. Violence on TV had definitely been toned down over the last few years. One of two of the scenes may be a bit too much.

All in all though, this is a remarkably good episode.

David Dawson is excellent here, he seems like such a nice guy in real life, his character here is vile, Stephen Robertson perhaps steals the show, and doesn't even speak a word.

Disturbing, but excellent, 9/10.

One of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen.

Those complaining about the violence in this episode haven't watched horror moives. This is something of a horror episode but edging closer to a thriller of course. It's horror because what happens on screen is horrific and pretty realistic to how this would go down. I love this show but this episode is on another level. I've been binging this show preparing to watch the movie that will be in theaters here on Thursday. This is the absolutely the best episode so far of this series though. It will be hard to top it. Great filmmaking here. This could have been in theater as a short film and it would be a hit. Really looking forward to where this show is going in the rest of the seasons and especially the last of this one. This show keeps getting better and better. Also, Karen's out there, there is much more horrific stuff out there. Find a bigger fish to get on a soap box for *shrugs*

Maybe Too Much
Hitchcoc12 September 2017
The creators of this show have such a propensity for violence that they create the utter scum of the earth to be the villains. The killings of innocent people randomly by a taciturn fiend with D & D dice is at the center of all this. But at episode's end we are in for a real surprise. Luther is also protecting the girl and is under the thumb of those porn kings. He is doing things that are so destructive. Anyway, it is almost too hard to watch. We also have a fly in the ointment that is revealed in this episode.

INCONSISTENT
Warin_West-El6 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There seems to be an ongoing pattern. On the Luther show, civilians never appear capable of defending themselves in the face of violence. They just stare like deer in headlamps, hoping for the best. For the American viewer this is quite frustrating . . . ."

A few episodes ago, we saw Luther throw an object through a window at work. This episode, a wimpish man slaps Luther in the face AND HE DOES NOTHING. That was totally inconsistent characterization.

Here's the kicker: the ONE person who got the job done this episode was (wait for it). . . JENNY. She did what Luther SHOULD have done.

Isn't it interesting that in this series, it's the women who possess the sanity and get the job done which the men fail to do. Thank you Alice, Jenny and Erin.

Helplessly Watching as Chaos Triumphs
insideout09811 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
One must get used to the fact that in Luther, no one has guns other than British SWAT and detectives who rarely use them. It bears further noting that civilians never appear capable of defending themselves in the face of violence. They just stare like deer in headlamps, hoping for the best. For the American viewer this is quite frustrating. Things would play out quite differently here. In this episode, a homicidal psychopath begins destroying property in front of an audience of shoppers at a gas station. This leads to the deaths of two of the customers because no one is armed, the police are MIA, and the shoppers are paralyzingly incapable of handling the deranged individual. He just taunts and kills 2 of them with a hammer. Then he waltzes into an office tower and begins murdering people, again, with a hammer. In the United States, he'd be dead before he lifted the damn thing in the air. Security would be all over him. Instead, he just does what he does in the most brutal spectacle imaginable and it was both frustrating and nauseatingly bloody. If there were an infomercial for the NRA this episode is it.

Gory bloody, and sick to show this!! HORRIBLE ACTS!
cliftonphotographer10 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Up until this episode I was a fan.

Sorry, but this episode took it too far, there is massive bludgeoning with a hammer and stomping on people. It may be the final episode that I watch. This is getting too typical of glorifying the violence to get ratings!! VERY VERY VERY SICK! In this episode people are sprayed with acid to blind them and they are beat over and over again in the head with a hammer very clearly on the screen! This is EXACTLY the kind of TV the promotes and CAUSES sick psychotic people to mass murder!! Not everyone of course, but some people only need an episode like this to copy! I hope this show gets canceled after seeing this garbage!
