A pleasant surprise on its own

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't looking forward to HIMYF's return. As a big fan of the original series, I had a strong distaste for most of HIMYF's first season. It wasn't offensively bad but it didn't capture the essence and the heart of HIMYM whatsoever.

This episode does several things to (somewhat effectively) capture that HIMYM spirit. The flashback to Sid and Jesse's college years with their hideous hair and the flash forward at the very end (though in HIMYM it was used to reveal events that would heavily impact the story, whereas here it feels like its baiting fans of the old show to keep watching and overall feels cheap).

Besides some predictable jokes and the lack of any sort of moral compass for Sophie (which makes her fairly unlikeable), the cast is starting to gel together really well and you can tell they now have genuine friendships off screen.

Cool and Chill

Overall I would say How I Met Your Father's first season was kind of a bust. The cast wasn't strong and the material just wasn't there, but there was hope.

This episode gave the series a little bit of promise. I actually found myself laughing a bit, and they kept a simple premise going for the whole half hour and it truly felt like something we would have seen on How I Met Your Mother.

I just think that there are a lot of other comedies out there on TV that are better, even with many of them having wrapped recently, but for legacy purposes this remians a show worth watching each and every week.

A good start for a good season?

I had my problems with season 1, too many characters, hardly any good humour, only Charlie was on the same level as the old characters and the narrative structure was weak.

Some things have remained the same, seven or in this episode even nine characters, who all have to play their part, are too many for a 25 minute episode, not everyone can be considered accordingly in the character development.

There are still some jokes that appeal to a very young audience at boomer level and thus take you out of the scene.

Now that I've said that, it's important to mention all the positive things.

The characters harmonise really well, they are written in such a way that they can develop and still contribute to the story, which is classically constructed while incorporating a lot of the flair of the original series.

The cuts are similarly well placed as in HIMYM and thus support the mostly really good jokes of the episode.

The showpiece of the episode though is definitely the finale, while you expect a good episode to fade out, there is a frequently used stylistic device from the original series that breaks the mood and creates a moment of pure ecstasy with a legendary (wink) character.

It is truly a good start to a long and hopefully similarly good season as this episode.

Great start to the season. Characters feel much more natural and fun, and a lot more of the jokes landed this time around. Still has some of the cheesiness and cringe but it's balanced with much more likeable performances and clever editing and writing that make it more bearable and fun.

I was a fan of the first season, but this is far better in comparison, comparable to the leap in quality from HIMYM season 1 to season 2.

Hope it keeps up because if it does this could be one of the best sitcoms of the last several years, and the fun HIMYM connections make for a great added bonus.

Also, that ending reveal gave me chills.

A strong start

While I personally enjoyed the first season as a whole, there were admittedly episodes that made it feel like the show was trying to hard to separate itself from the original material, which made it fairly difficult to watch and get invested.

This first episode set a very strong tone for a season and characters that are more relatable and more enjoyable. One of The most appealing things with HIMYM for me was being able to watch the characters go through emotional growth and evolve into better versions of themselves. Genuinely excited to see that journey again with the new cast, and excited to see how this season develops it.

When A Man Loves A Woman
tamartins25 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, this episode was so good. Sophie trying to sing when a man loves a woman was hysterical, I laughed hard on this one. I hope they have a moment of Hilary singing a whole song or almost a entire one, I'm a big fan of her since I was a kid, it would be very exciting. Josh having a Ross (from Friends) moment was too good, I love him. And not to spoil anything but I'm excited to see the guest appearance again. The show is getting better and better each episode, I'll admit that I wasn't really excited to watch when it came out and only did so because of Hilary, but it grew on me and I do love it now. Loved the beginning of the season and excited for what's to come. I wish the episodes were a little longer though.

A Realistic Review Of The 1st Episode
Benthewatcher16 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So I want to start with the "Previously on Himyf part". A sentence caught my attention so much which was Sophie telling Valentina that Jesse and I (Sophie) see the world the same! NO. You two are completely different in that part and it's obvious! Things like that can question the character development.

Now one of my issues with this show so far is the number of main characters and it gets hard to follow all of the stories and backgrounds. Moreover, the more the characters the harder it is for writers to prepare a proper character development for a 20 minute runtime show.

Throughout the first episode we see Hannah who is not among the main 6 but is always there and gets a lot of screen time. Now we have Drew too! He is definitely not one of the main characters but somehow he is part of a lot of episodes! I'm fine with him being around in some episodes as he is Sid and Jesse's friend but he shouldn't get this much screen time.

In one of the final scenes Sid told Hannah that I wanted you to have one of the greatest night ever! No you didn't and you didn't even try for it. They should be careful about these dialogues as they will make a character like Sid to be considered as a hypocrite or liar and they only did it in order to have a lame romantic scene.

About the cameos, I like to see them from any of the Himym cast members under one important condition which is they shouldn't bother Himym's legacy.

While watching this episode, I didn't laugh; I mostly smiled. But the laugh track wasn't annoying.

Overall, it was a pretty normal episode.

For me, unfortunately the female characters have not been likeable so much (Sophie, Valentina and Ellen). But I like all of the male characters (Jesse, Sid and Charlie even Ian) so far.
