After almost passing up No One Lives and mistaking it for something generic, Ryūhei Kitamura set out to make a fun and exciting horror movie. And he more than succeeded without sacrificing the fear and personality found in the original script. With Robert Hall’s bloody practical effects sweetening the pot, this movie ends up being a delightfully gory action-slasher.
The initial setup of No One Lives is both familiar and misleading. The cold open shows an imperiled young woman (Adelaide Clemens) running through the woods. It is only when she is caught by her unseen pursuer does the audience learn her name: Emma. Using a broken piece of glass, she desperately scratches her name, while upside down, in a nearby tree before presumably dying off screen. Several months later, the story shifts to Luke Evans and Laura Ramsey’s characters, who pause their road trip and stop at a motel out in the sticks.

"You should walk away now and if you don't? I will take you to hell." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action movie titled The Doorman, set in New York City. This is the latest feature form Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura and it's debuting on VOD this October. Ruby Rose stars in this as a soldier who returns from combat and befriends a family in New York. When a group of thieves, lead by Jean Reno, breaks into their expensive home, she takes the lead and fights back. As Erik Davis pointed out: "this feels like Ruby Rose's Die Hard." The cast includes Louis Mandylor, Rupert Evans, Aksel Hennie, and David Sakurai. If this was really as good as Die Hard, I think we'd have heard more about it by now. ...

For Nightmare Cinema, five Masters of Horror have assembled to immerse fans in five tales of terror, all told within the confines of a haunted movie theatre inhabited by The Projectionist (Mickey Rourke), a mysterious entity who oversees the facility, showing those who dare enter its doors their deepest fears and darkest secrets. Nightmare Cinema directors include Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, and Ryûhei Kitamura, and it features performances from the likes of Richard Chamberlain, Elizabeth Reaser, Belinda Balaski, Patrick Wilson, and Annabeth Gish, to name a few.
The wraparound segment in Nightmare Cinema is called “The Projectionist,” and it acts as the glue that brings all these different stories and cinematic visions together through the Rialto Theatre. Garris provides his directorial expertise for these various interstitial segments, and he sets a nice, eerie tone for all the stories to come. Rourke pops in for a few of the wraparound scenes,...

"Hell is on the way." Shudder has released an official trailer for a dark horror, thriller titled Downrange, the latest feature from Japanese genre filmmaker Ryuhei Kitamura. The film is about a group of friends who end up the target of a distant, vicious, hidden sniper after they pop a tire driving cross country. The film's cast includes Kelly Connaire, Stephanie Pearson, Rod Hernandez-Farella, Anthony Kirlew, Alexa Yeames, and Jason Tobias. This is basically a terrifying sniper survival movie on a dusty country road with no one around. The shot of the sniper in this trailer is very slick, and the way it builds is intense. Looks like a helluva scary sniper film. Pity poor Luke Evans at the premiere of Clash of The Titans (2010). As Apollo, half brother of Perseus, Evans had scored himself a major part in a huge Hollywood blockbuster. Ten years treading the boards in the West End building up a reputation as a charismatic leading man with rich Welsh baritone were about to pay off.
Imagine the crushing disappointment on the night to find out that all his scenes, bar one had been cut – several scenes of Evans dressed like a Quality Street toffee are available to watch on YouTube. To make matters worse, he had to stay and watch the rest of the film, a tortuous prospect for anyone.
For a while that seemed to be the story of Luke Evans’s life: close but no cigar. He scored parts in big movies with high expectations that went nowhere (Immortals) and franchises that foundered on the first attempt (Robin Hood,...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Ryûhei Kitamura. Writers: Ryûhei Kitamura, Joey O'Bryan. Cast: Kelly Connaire, Stephanie Pearson and Rod Hernandez. Japanese director Ryûhei Kitamura is known to this film fan for his work on The Midnight Meat Train (2008) and No One Lives (2012). Both of these earlier horror films are dark, gory spectacles. Kitamura continues his trend, to bring bloody scenarios to the screen, with Downrange. Six college students are trapped along the side of the road as a sniper takes aim at them. They are one bullet away from becoming roadkill. The film's plot is very bare bones; Downrange is more of a scenario, than a typical story. Downrange is also similar to other films, like Joel Schumacher's Phone Booth (2002) and Doug Liman's The Wall (2017). The focus is on the victim and their psychology as the villain remains anonymous.

After the WWE's success with The Call, they would stay in thriller territory for the much darker No One Lives (2013), an extremely violent genre movie from director Ryuhei Kitamura. Like The Call, No One Lives only features a wrestling star in a small supporting role. This time it was the turn of Brodus Clay, making his film debut. There aren’t any heroes in No One Lives, with the film based around a group of criminals who try to rob the wrong guy. In this case it is serial killer Luke Evans, who wastes no time in setting up traps and dispatching his would be attackers. Based on J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel of the same name, High-Rise is the latest from filmmaker Ben Wheatley and stars Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Jeremy Irons, and Elizabeth Moss. Written by Amy Jump (who collaborated with Wheatley on Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England), High-Rise is a fascinatingly surreal cautionary tale of how class systems effectively break down and why society will always be its own worst enemy.
Set in 1975, High-Rise follows Dr. Robert Laing (Hiddleston) as he moves into a futuristic and luxurious apartment building in which residents are ranked by their stature in life and relegated to live on the floors the building’s architect and overseer, Anthony Royal (Irons), and his aristocratic associates see fit. The poorest folks live towards the bottom, the middle class reside above them, and so forth all the way up to Royal’s insanely intricate penthouse, complete with...

Throughout his career, filmmaker Ben Wheatley has always taken chances as a storyteller, and his latest movie, High-Rise, may be his boldest and most ambitious work to date. The film stars Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, and many more as the residents of an idyllic apartment complex that promises its inhabitants a self-sustaining existence, but only results in destruction and madness once humanity’s inherent selfish nature consumes them all. A blistering and darkly comedic social satire, High-Rise is a not-to-be-missed affair arriving on VOD April 28th and in theaters on May 13th.
Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Wheatley at the press day for High-Rise, and during our interview we discussed the approach to adapting J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel, his experiences collaborating with a stellar cast, and much more.

The Signal
Written by Carlyle Eubank, William Eubank, and David Frigerio
Directed by William Eubank
USA, 2014
Whether or not we are alone in the universe is an age old question that has racked the brains of mankind for millennia. Extraterrestrial life has been explored and researched countless times over. We have not received a definite answer to the question of whether aliens exist or not but it seems that motion pictures and other forms of art have attempted to answer that question for us. Science fiction allows us to create creatures and worlds that reach out into deep space. The Signal attempts to continue this eternal quest for knowledge and present alien life in a believable, sometimes scary fashion. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t do a very good job at answering the questions it asks.

You know the drill. A couple of days ago I hit you with Chapter One of this unranked list of my favorite films from 2013. Now I’m back with Chapter Two. Whether or not this will serve as the conclusion to my list remains to be seen. I keep remembering titles I saw earlier in the year that demand inclusion, so we’ll see how it goes. Either way, here are some more movies from 2013 that you should put in your eyeballs. If you missed Chapter One of this list, you can reference it, here.
Toad Road
Artsplotation Films had a hell of a year, as far as I’m concerned. They gave us the gnarly Wither, the equally gnarly Hidden in the Woods and of course, the cerebral Toad Road. I hadn’t really heard word one about this film, until review copies started going out. After that, almost...

Happy 2014 Everyone! Looking back, I thought 2013 was an exceptional year for horror, especially for independent genre fare that ended making up most of my favorite films over the last 12 months. In fact, 2013 ended up being so good, even a number of remakes that came out this year managed to be as strong as their original horror peers and that’s pretty damn impressive.
Here’s a look at some of my very favorite things that happened in horror along the way during 2013:
John Dies at the End:
I’d been waiting patiently to see Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End ever since I chatted him up about the project at SXSW 2012. Thankfully, the film didn’t disappoint at all when it was released last January. Wonderfully weird and oddly heartfelt, no one has quite mastered the art of the unexpected like Coscarelli has throughout his career...

A new recurring character has been added to Season 2 of "The Following" on Fox, and we also have a bit of guest star casting news to report that got lost in the shuffle last week leading up to Halloween.
First, Aussie actress Jacinda Barrett (pictured; "Suits," "Zero Hour") will play Julia, a very disarming and alluring woman whose mysterious intentions send several main characters in a frightening new direction.
The guest star heading our way is "Oz" alum Lee Tergesen (The Collection, No One Lives), who will appear in the seventh episode as Kurt Bolen, a seemingly normal family man who may harbor a dark secret.
They join the previously announced Keith Carradine as a friend of Ryan Hardy, Jessica Stroup as Hardy’s NYPD specialist niece, Connie Nielsen as a romantic interest for Ryan, Sam Underwood as a dangerous young man/possible follower of Joe Carroll, Tiffany Boone as...

"Pulling Strings" takes a bit of a hit by being the third Latin single-dad comedy to roll into American theaters in a month. And though it is funnier and out-charms "Tio Papi," it lacks the whimsy, magical realism and kid-friendly sentiment of the sleeper hit "Instructions Not Included."
But this tale of a mariachi singer denied a visa, who then tries to trick and charm the American embassy staffer who turned him down, is a winning vehicle for singer / actor Jaime Camil.
Alejandro (Camil) is raising his 9-year-old daughter alone, and fears what the Catholic school nuns are telling him is true -- that he's botching the job. She needs to go spend time with her grandparents. In Arizona.
Having no property, permanent address or passport, he gets little more than the no-eye-contact dismissal from U.S. Embassy functionary Rachel (Laura Ramsey of "No One Lives" and "Kill the Irishman...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

The Great Beauty (15)
(Paolo Sorrentino, 2013, Ita/Fra) Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, 141 mins
Sorrentino proves himself a worthy successor to Fellini here, tracking modern Roman decadence with staggering exuberance and an eye for the stylishly surreal. Filling the Marcello Mastroianni role is Servillo's world-weary writer and socialite, who stalks the city's elite demi-monde of hedonistic parties, pretentious art, cynical grotesques and faded glories – but finds reveries and regrets around every corner.
About Time (12A)
(Richard Curtis, 2013, UK) Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams. 123 mins
A sci-fi element reinvigorates Curtis's trademarked romcom formula, but there's still a feeling of deja vu to this middle-class love story, in which Gleeson uses his inherited time-travelling powers to woo McAdams – albeit at a cost.

★★☆☆☆ No One Lives (2012) is the second English-language excursion from Japanese director Ryuhei Kitamura (following 2008's The Midnight Meat Train). Starring British actor Luke Evans, Kitamura's latest is a gory cat-and-mouse slasher that still ultimately feels like a hollow shell of grotesque action sequences and deadpan humour. When a gang of ruthless highway thieves kidnap a wealthy couple travelling across country, they could never have imagined the Pandora's box of malevolence about to open. Whilst the couple (including Evans) are held captive in a disused petrol station the rest of the gang plunder their car.
Amongst the meagre collection of clothes and souvenirs they're shocked to discover a young girl hidden in the trunk. Her surprise discovery alerts them to the fact that their captive may not be the simple middle class tourist they initially thought he was; instead a self proclaimed 'total psychopath' who'll stop at nothing in order to...

When a handsome young couple, played by Luke Evans and Laura Ramsey, are kidnapped by a murderous gang of highway robbers, the beginning of No One Lives looks very much like your average, run of the mill survival horror. Yet what begins so formulaically twists suddenly into an anarchy of gore, where genre heroes are eliminated one by one and nothing is certain, and your own cliché-ometer is used to pull the ground from under your feet.
Under conditions where no character is fundamentally kind spirited, and where deaths occur like a lottery – paying no attention to genre rules of survival – there is difficulty in deciding who to root for in this Ryûhei Kitamura production. Instead, allegiances lie with the real psychopath, the nameless slaughterer, credited as ‘Driver’, played by Evans in a masterstroke of casting. Not since James Bond has mass murder been so cool. In fact, smartly dressed,...

Frankenstein’s Army
Written by Richard Raaphorst, Chris W. Mitchell, and Miguel Tejada-Flores
Directed by Richard Raaphorst
Netherlands/USA/Czech Republic, 2013
Frankenstein’s Army is the closest thing thus far to a live-action Bioshock adaptation. The second Frightfest feature to resemble a video game – albeit in a positive light – the film forgoes the tiresome trademarks of the found-footage format, its curious lens rendering the entire escapade a thrilling a first-person adventure. We begin among a troupe of Russian soldiers during World War II as they delve deeper from the outskirts of the forest and into a laboratory of mechanical nasties, eventually confronting the mad scientist responsible for their creation. All the while, the camera never skirts from its responsibility as a steadfast explorer.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creativity – and by extension, that of director Richard Raaphorst – is truly something to behold. There’s a huge range of beasts in all shapes and sizes,...

The WWE logo splashing across the screen during a trailer or promo, doesn’t exactly fill this potential viewer with confidence. Sure, they’ve had some watchable(at best) films, especially in the horror genre, such as See No Evil, but they also have duds such as The Marine 3, and 12 Rounds 2. In 2013, I was witness to not one, but two WWE Films titles that were not only just watchable, but I’d consider them to be exceptional. One of which was the action thriller Dead Man Down, starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace. The other WWE film that hit the big screen in 2013 was No One Lives. I remember the first time I was exposed to the trailer, it was before a screening of Rob Zombie’s The Lords Of Salem, that I had driven two hours to see. I’m not sure if I was just in a bad mood from driving,...

It's safe to say we've seen the "home invasion" thriller thrown at us from every conceivable angle by this point. The premise is nothing new, of course, as those who remember the original Straw Dogs (1971) can remind you, but over the last several years we've seen a whole lot of foreign and/or independent films that involve A) a house, B) some killers, and C) a siege of some unpleasant variety.
Take your pick: Funny Games (either version), Them (aka Ils) and High Tension (aka Switchblade Romance) and Inside, The Purge and The Strangers, The Aggression Scale, the remake of Mother's Day, the long-awaited You're Next, and probably a dozen other movies we've both seen. So right off the bat it should be clear that the film we're here to discuss -- No One Lives -- is nothing close to fresh, original, or particularly novel. But the ravenous horror fans...

No One Lives director Ryuhei Kitamura took part in our latest Q&A session, telling us about his love for Driver, working with Luke Evans and Robert Hall, and what’s next:
Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. What was it about the script for No One Lives that made you want to take on this project?
Ryuhei Kitamura: I loved the script because it was not just about blood and guts. I was fascinated by the character of Driver; a non-stop killing machine doing it all for love. To me this is a twisted love story.
When looking for your lead actor, was Luke Evans your first pick? What made him stand out from the pack and why was he perfect for this role?

"Amour"
What's It About? Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke tells the heart-wrenching story of an elderly couple fighting against the deterioration of the body and mind in this brutally honest French drama. Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are retired octogenarian music teachers whose lives vastly alter when Anne suffers from the first of several strokes. Georges struggles to take care of his wife as watches her gradually lose her ability to move and speak.
Why We're In: One of the most powerful films in recent years and winner of the 2012 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, "Amour" shows love at its most harrowing. Known as a horror master, Haneke uses slow-pacing and raw storytelling in this film to truly show life's real horrors. Ryuhei Kitamura’s second American film (his first was the Vinnie Jones starrer The Midnight Meat Train), No One Lives harks back to his early work – the Super 8 short Down to Hell and his most famous flick Versus – putting strangers together in a pitched battle against a common enemy.
The film starts out very much along the typical backwoods/hillbilly slant, as a gang of robbers screw up their latest mansion heist and, to make up for their loses, kidnap a couple in a car instead. It looks as though we’re seemingly headed down the torture route, with our villains set to get the information they need from the couple by any means necessary. Filmmaker F. Whilst speaking with Total Film O'Barr revealed that 'It was his idea to go right back to the source material and essentially shoot it shot-for-shot, as in the book, but with a little more backstory for some of the characters'. British star Luke Evans ('No One Lives') scored the role over a heap of other actors and has already been involved in some early make-up shots which have impressed O'Barr....
