As new music launches go, the arrival of Lil Nas X’s “J Christ” single and video earlier this month was hardly blessed. The artwork that adorned the single — Lil Nas X strapped to a cross and being hoisted up by five people, an apocalyptic sky behind them — led to a predictable uproar from the religious front. So much so, in fact, that Lil Nas X posted a video on his socials explaining the imagery (“It was literally me saying I’m back like Jesus”) and apologizing for offending anyone with the song’s accompanying,...

A group of 200 internationally renowned writers, publishers, directors and producers have signed an open letter sounding the alarm over the implications of AI for human creativity.
“Several generative models of language and images have recently appeared in the public and private domains; they are developing at breakneck speed, accessible to all for any task which involves writing and creating,” read the letter, published online on Tuesday.
“These models are shaping a world where, little by little, creation can do without human beings, thereby hastening the automation of many creative and intellectual professions formerly deemed inaccessible to mechanization.”
The letter, initiated by European translation professionals under the banner of “Collective For Human Translation – In Flesh And Blood”, comes amid growing concern about the impact of generative AI technology on professionals working in the creative industries.

Pink Floyd had one of the great resurrection stories in classic rock. Founder, guitarist, and chief songwriter Syd Barrett’s creative genius put the band on the map. His deteriorating mental health led his bandmates to move on without him. Barrett crashed Pink Floyd’s recording sessions for Wish You Were Here, but that happened years after he unexpectedly showed up at the studio while his former band made another record.
Syd Barrett crashed Pink Floyd’s sessions for ‘Atom Heart Mother’
Barrett enjoyed the benefits of Pink Floyd’s success for roughly a year before the band moved on without him. The Mapcap received royalty checks for his early contributions but had nothing to do with Floyd’s most successful era. Or almost nothing to do with their commercial peak. Pink Floyd recorded several all-time great classic rock songs. They also hid some underrated gems on their albums, but “Have You Got It Yet?” wasn’t one of them. Still, that tune reunited Pink Floyd’s three surviving members for a movie of the same name that looks at the band’s early history.
Pink Floyd reunited for the movie ‘Have You Got It Yet?’
Pink Floyd’s intraband relationships were rarely smooth sailing, even when the band reached its peak.
Bassist and chief songwriter Roger Waters and lead guitarist David Gilmour often found themselves on rocky ground. Waters fired keyboard player Rick Wright while recording The Wall and supplanted drummer Nick Mason with Andy Newmark on The Final Cut. The classic Pink Floyd lineup bitterly disintegrated after that latter album. The years and distance did little to thaw the frosty relationships.
Still, Have You Got It Yet? got Pink Floyd to reunite.

They made a legitimate claim to the classic rock throne in the 1970s, but Pink Floyd’s discography spanned decades. Many listeners misunderstood their biggest hit, and while the songs might be open to interpretation, the order of Pink Floyd’s albums is set and stone.
The five Pink Floyd members created 15 studio albums
Aside from a few early concerts, Pink Floyd only operated as a quartet. Still, the shadow of Syd Barrett loomed over the band for years, even after they moved on without him.
Barrett put Pink Floyd on the map as the singer, primary songwriter, and lead guitarist. He and bandmates Roger Waters (bass), Richard Wright (keyboards), and Nick Mason (drums) established themselves as the flagship band for psychedelic underground London in 1967. By the end of the year, Barrett was already on the path toward his post-Floyd life.

Pink Floyd is best known as the band whose Dark Side of the Moon broke all records as the longest charting album in rock music history. Dozens of their songs are classic rock staples, the feature length film of their rock opera The Wall is a cult classic, and their sound is as instantly recognizable as their enigmatic back story. Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd is co-directed by Roddy Bogawa, the filmmaker behind Taken by Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis, and Storm Thorgerson, a Pink Floyd intimate who started the graphic arts team which illustrated the band’s most iconic album covers. But the band’s founder and guiding light, Syd Barrett, dimmed in the glare of the spotlight, leaving the group after their second album, long before they achieved the stratospheric success their later work would bring. Anton Corbijn directs this enjoyable documentary about the design duo who created extraordinary images for Pink Floyd, 10cc, Led Zeppelin and more
Photographer and film-maker Anton Corbijn is the very best person to direct this very enjoyable documentary about design outfit Hipgnosis and its dynamic co-founders Aubrey “Po” Powell and Storm Thorgerson, the creative powerhouse who virtually invented the concept of the album cover as a vital artform; they worked for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney and Wings, 10cc and others, when the vinyl rock industry was in its 70s pomp. They devised extraordinary images which were enigmatic, monolithic, audacious, funny, surreal, hip and gnomic and conceived albums as an unacknowledged multi-media experience: you gazed at the cover while the LP was on the turntable. Hipgnosis’s staggering location work in deserts and wildernesses and with flying pigs over London landmarks virtually made them pioneers of land art, the...

Some classic rock guitarists are known as much for their instruments as they are for their music. David Gilmour and his Fender Stratocasters fall into that category. The Pink Floyd guitarist amassed a huge collection of instruments he used on the band’s hits and underrated songs. Gilmour owned and played one of the world’s rarest and most coveted guitars, which eventually sold for $1.8 million.

It’s proof of being someone who got in the elevator at ground level before something exploded in popularity. Gilmour owned what might be the rarest Fender guitar ever, though he wasn’t the first guitarist to play the model.

Pink Floyd had one of the most remarkable reinventions of any classic rock band. The psychedelic pioneers lost their creative leader when they parted ways with Syd Barrett in 1968. After searching for a way forward without him, they eventually found their path and became one of the biggest bands of the 1970s with the impactful The Dark Side of the Moon. That album was a cornerstone of their career, but several underrated Pink Floyd songs from the band’s catalog deserve recognition. (All songs presented in chronological order).
1. ‘The Nile Song’ Album: More
Pink Floyd’s first effort without any contribution from Barrett was their soundtrack to the 1969 movie More. Without their mercurial leader and with the freedom to create for someone else’s project instead of their own album, the band showed off a range of styles. “The Nile Song” proved to be the most unprecedented song on the tracklist.

Pink Floyd might have had one of the most dramatic transformations of any major classic rock band. Though drummer Nick Mason said the band’s groundbreaking early concerts were rubbish, Floyd became a psychedelic sensation. When the group moved on without founder and chief songwriter Syd Barrett, they emerged as a commercially successful prog rock powerhouse. But it didn’t happen overnight. One Pink Floyd song marked the breaking point between its psychedelic origins and legendary future.
The Pink Floyd song ‘Childhood’s End’ pointed toward ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and beyond
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page praised Barrett’s genius approach to music making. The innovation didn’t last. His erratic behavior led his bandmates to move on without him in 1968. Yet transforming into the prog-rock band that churned out commercially successful albums throughout the 1970s wasn’t seamless.
Pink Floyd held on to their psychedelic roots for several years after dismissing Barret.

Elisapie, a Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter, plumbs new sadness in one of Metallica’s biggest, most emotional hits on her recording, “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven).” Where the metal band drew inspiration from Ennio Morricone soundtracks, Spaghetti Westerns, and family trauma for the Black Album hit, Elisapie keeps things quiet, as she sings the lyrics in the indigenous Inuktitut. The instrumentation includes banjo, traditional drums, bass saxophone, throat singing, and saw, in addition to guitar and synth.

In the history of album cover art, only two parties have become arguably almost as famous as some of the bands they shot or designed for: Hipgnosis, in the 1970s, and Anton Corbijn, from the mid-‘80s forward. Those two forces come together with a new documentary, “Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis),” directed by Corbijn, about the era of artwork that entranced him, like most music fans, as a youth. Forty years after Hipgnosis ceased to be a going concern as we knew it, the company’s covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and countless others continue to be collected in coffee-table books. And when it comes to the stories behind the sleeves, rock fans still just can’t get enough… to quote a band that Corbijn came to be associated with a little bit later.

Browse through old photos of The Beatles, and you’ll find dozens, if not hundreds, where they’re smoking cigarettes. The band’s concerts always smelled like urine, but the Fab Four’s clothes probably stank of Marlboros and Dunhills. Paul McCartney’s addiction didn’t last, though, as a near-death experience in 1973 led him to quit smoking, at least for a while. Other musicians joined him in giving up cigarettes in the decades since.
Paul McCartney was ‘in hell’ and quit smoking cigarettes after 1 of ‘the most frightening periods’ of his life
The Fab Four had their limousines swarmed by fans, played a show in Montreal amid Ringo Starr death threats, and barely escaped their one trip to the Philippines in 1966. Yet Paul said making the Wings record Band on the Run in Lagos, Nigeria, trumped them all.

Firefly Lane is a series created by Maggie Friedman starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke.
Well, all good things must come to an end, so, unfortunately, here we have the last episodes of the second season of this sentimental series, which mixes friendship, life and… what is left when it is over.
Firefly Lane (2022)
Perhaps too much telefilm, perhaps too sentimental, but, undoubtedly, Firefly Lane has managed to win a place among the sappiest and straight-to-the-heart film lovers.
As a critic once said, despite everything, we will miss them.

Enjoy the ending.

Album artwork flipped from being an afterthought to a feature when classic rock bands started selling millions of records during their heyday. The large surface area of vinyl LP sleeves gave artists a huge pop culture canvas to work with, and they took advantage. Pink Floyd took full advantage of the album cover-as-artwork movement, and their best sleeves remain some of the most iconic ever created. The Beatles and Rolling Stones saw some of their album artwork banned, but Pink Floyd never ran into that problem.

Invisible City (Cidade Invisível) is a series directed by Júlia Pacheco Jordão and Luis Carone. It stars Marco Pigossi, Alessandra Negrini and Jéssica Córes.
The Invisible City is a very original fantasy and thriller series that knows how to swim wonderfully between the waters of the spiritual and criminal worlds, between the supernatural and the detective genre, and it also has an original aesthetic proposal.
About the Series
A murder thriller that gets lost in local legends, in the world of spirits and magic, and then presents us with a message of environmental conservation.

When it comes to coffee-table books that survey the great album covers of the classic rock era, there are generally two kinds: those that include a lot of the work of the 1970s design team called Hipgnosis, and those that consist entirely of Hipgnosis’ work. Virtually any rock superstar who had the cachet to ask his record company to blow hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Hipgnosis cover went for the splurge of commissioning an original piece of art that might join classic LP jackets from Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in a renaissance of 12’x12′ photographic surrealism. Only Hipgnosis could shoot a photo of a cow against a blue sky, put it on a Floyd cover (“Atom Heart Mother”), and make it look like an act of mysterious profundity on a level with the greatest works of Magritte.

Think of the most iconic rock album covers of all time from the 1970s: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, Led Zeppelin’s Houses Of The Holy and Presence, T. Rex’s Electric Warrior, Paul McCartney & Wings’ Band On The Run, AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, all of Peter Gabriel’s early albums, etc.

Lately, there’s been a curious strain of kneejerk revulsion expressed toward musical biopics such as “Elvis” for repeating tropes identified in “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” as if all popular genres don’t have repeated tropes. What’s funny is that there’s never really been the same reaction toward music documentaries in the 40 years since “This Is Spinal Tap.” Especially since that’s a much better movie. But why should there be? Just like pop and rock music depend on repetition (and the anticipation of repetition) for satisfaction and emotional release, music films, narrative or documentary, return to the same hallmarks over and over again.
“Squaring the Circle,” Anton Corbijn’s feature documentary debut, falls into this tradition too. This slightly overlong look at Hipgnosis, the London-based graphic design startup that designed some of the most striking, and important, album covers from 1968 to 1980, retreads all the old...

“American Idol” top four finalist Casey Bishop made a bold move Sunday night, sitting down with mentor Finneas to take on Billie Eilish’s “Wish You Were Gay.” She rocked the song’s co-writer/producer, and the judges, too — yet, despite all that love, apparently not everyone wished she would stay.
“So, you’re singing my sister’s song,” Finneas said to the 16-year-old Estero, Florida native about the track. “The greatest honor as a songwriter is hearing the song covered, and Casey has got an incredible instrument,” he continued, advising the teen to sing the song as if “these are lyrics you just thought up before you started singing.”
Dressed in white, Bishop delivered an emotional version of the song that had the judges lavishing praise on the performance.

“I don’t have any performing experience, really,” said “American Idol” semifinalist Casey Bishop at her audition in Ojai. “Most of the people that know that I love to sing are my friends. That’s pretty much it.” The 16-year old high school student (who was 15 when she auditioned) from Estero, Florida earned her spot on the ABC reality TV competition by singing “Live Wire” and “My Funny Valentine” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. On Sunday, May 16 Bishop will compete against Chayce Beckham, Grace Kinstler and Willie Spence for a spot in the Season 19 finale.
Each artist will sing three songs on this upcoming episode including a brand new single produced just for them. Bishop’s original track is “Love Me, Leave Me” produced by the teenager herself along with Grammy winner Ian Fitchuk. The youngster will also sing the Billie Eilish hit “wish you were...

After a phenomenal season 1, The Boys are ready to rock in season 2 with new episodes being dropped every Friday on Amazon Prime Video. With a third season already on the cards, it appears as though the show's incredible cast is going to be around for a very long time.

Rachel Okine.
Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford’s Aquarius Films has stepped up its feature film and TV drama development slate, collaborating with such creatives as Justine Flynn, Del Kathryn Barton and Huna Amweero, Clementine Ford, Anya Beyersdorf, Roger Monk and Rhys Graham.
The production company gained momentum after hiring former eOne and Hopscotch Features executive Rachel Okine in the newly created role of managing director.
Okine joined in March, just as the pandemic struck. After a pause when, she says, Aquarius’ focus on growth switched to survival mode, the development pace picked up.

Before the late-night show and the household fame, the Roots were the pride of Philadelphia’s underground hip-hop scene. The quiet heart of that version of the Roots — an unforgettable part of the lineup that put them on the map, won countless devoted fans, and enabled all the success to come — was Malik B, who died this week at age 47.
Malik wasn’t the flashiest verbal technician in the Roots; that was always Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Black Thought, a boundless lyrical dynamo whose freestyle abilities were legendary from Day One.

When Joshua Ray Walker was a kid in Dallas, Texas, his mom took a job doing marketing at motorsports events. Every weekend, he’d tag along with her to monster truck competitions, motorcycle rallies, car and boat shows — anything that had a loud engine really. “Basically any redneck sport you can think of,” he says.
Walker liked being around the cars and trucks, but he was most fascinated by the rough-around-the-edges women who were recruited — often by his mother — to promote a certain product. Which is to say they were paid to wear a bikini,...

Iconic Japanese Director Yoji Yamada latest film “Tora san, Wish You Were Here” will be screening at the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. Yamada is best known as the creator of the “Tora san” series, which spans 48 films over a 25 year period. “Wish You Were Here” marks the directors return to the series after a two decade absence. Synopsis
In 1969, Yamada Yōji released the first film starring the uplifting anti-hero Kuruma Torajirō, in short Tora-san: an ordinary, friendly man with a golden heart from the old Shibamata neighborhood (in Tokyo’s Katsushika district), who is shown through the series grew to be the embodiment of the Japanese lower middle class. He stood in front of a familiar old world of straightforward decency where left and right found an almost impossible balance. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of her international film sales and distribution company LevelK, Tine Klint offers some advice to Australian filmmakers.
Perhaps the most valuable tip: Don’t target the world, even though the mantra “local for global” is in vogue.
