It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.
When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

My brother Neil Jaworski, who has died aged 43, was a talented screenwriter whose work was marked with a lightness of touch and wit and also an understanding of the absurdity of life.
He worked on films with Working Title and Aardman Animations. With the actor and writer Sally Phillips he co-wrote The Decoy Bride (2011), a romantic comedy set in the Outer Hebrides starring David Tennant, Alice Eve and Kelly Macdonald. It had a sophistication reminiscent of the screwball comedy films he loved – from Monty Python to Woody Allen.

“I’m quite keen to meet a Finnish shaman, have you seen them?” asks Sally Phillips three minutes into an interview that’s supposed to be about her role in new family animation Ferdinand. Scrolling through her phone, she presents me with a photograph of a fearsome looking woman with Pris from Blade Runner eye make-up, wearing an elaborate headdress and holding a tambourine.

“Look at the expression! Very, very miserable, tambourine, excellent eye make-up” says Phillips, delighted. “I play a character who looks a bit like that in Zapped! and I did something else recently where they painted a black chicken on one eye. I thought, well, it’s slowly, slowly happening, I’m turning into a Finnish Shaman.”

The directors of Doctor Who's latest series brought back the scares in a big way. Well, fear is a superpower...
Warning: contains spoilers for every episode of the eighth series of Doctor Who.
We were promised back in August that the Peter Capaldi era of Doctor Who would mark a departure from the adventurous fairy tale approach of Matt Smith's run.
“Darker” and “edgier” are buzz words that have been applied to countless Hollywood sequels, but the eighth series actually lived up to that promise and by September, the tabloid press were dispensing think-pieces about whether or not it had become too scary for children (“scary” here standing in for “complicated” in Smith's era and “heretical” when David Tennant got a lift off a couple of angel robots in Voyage Of The Damned.)
All moral panics aside, this series brought back the scares in a big, bad way.

The idea of holding a film festival in one of the most culturally isolationist countries on Earth might seem bizarre, but this year's Pyongyang event, which opened yesterday, is giving North Koreans their best chance yet to see foreign films on the big screen. One of its most eagerly anticipated choices is Scottish romantic comedy The Decoy Bride, with Doctor Who star David Tennant.
Although former North Korean ruler Kim Jong Il was famous for his love of cinema, once going so far as to kidnap his favourite South Korean auteur and force him to make monster movies, the changes in the festival actually have more to do with his successor, Kim Jong Un, who has been working to strengthen cultural ties between the hermit kingdom and the outside world. In particular, Kim Jong Un has worked with China, and groundbreaking North Korean-Chinese co-production Meet In Pyongyang will also feature at.

One must imagine that a good portion of romantic comedy’s appeal is the boundless illogic with which their star-crossed lovers are drawn together; otherwise, it probably would have died out a long time ago. Watching The Decoy Bride is like watching the world’s loneliest, most awkward teenager orchestrate the fate of two people who natural laws dictate would never, ever get together, but will simply have to for the purposes of this story. If you find these sort of set-ups appealing you may well enjoy Decoy; if not, look out.

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "The Artist" What's It About? The Academy Awards' Best Picture of the Year just so happened to be a black-and-white silent film about a beloved actor who struggles to adjust to the advent of "talkies" in Hollywood. This has to be one of the biggest MPAA rating bulletins I've ever had to put together with 11 prominent films getting new ratings or amended ratings. Included is Julie Delpy's 2 Days in New York co-starring Chris Rock, Pixar's Brave, the upcoming dramedy Celeste and Jesse Forever, Marjane Satrapi's Chicken with Plums, William Friedkin's Killer Joe which gets an updated Nc-17 rating reason, an R-rating for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection, the horror collaboration V/H/S, The Words starring Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper, the R-rated rom-com Ruby Sparks and Sylvester Stallone's newly dated Bullet to the Head. Like I said, it is packed and if you're wondering what that film called Kiara the Brave is considering its similar rating to Pixar's Brave, just click here and bask in the glory of some of the best animation you've ever seen. The new streaming service for leftfield movies will be welcomed by many film fans, but there's a risk that local indie cinemas will suffer
For all the chatter about the coming revolution in film distribution, movie fans might be forgiven for thinking that there has been a lot of hot air and not much actual innovation. If you want to see a new release, your choices remain a visit to the cinema or pursuing pirated content. You have to wait four months before you can leegally watch a film in the comfort of your own home. Sure, there is the odd exception such as The Decoy Bride – a little-loved romantic comedy starring David Tennant and Kelly Macdonald, which last month you could find on digital platforms such as FilmFlex, iTunes and Blinkbox, as well as simultaneously in four cinemas – but this is hardly reinventing the film distribution wheel.

The screwball is making a comeback. A comedy genre which flourished in Hollywood in the 1930s and early 1940s, and which yielded such classic films as His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby and The Lady Eve as well as such latter-day manifestations as Some Like It Hot (1959), is being dusted down by a new generation of film-makers. Last week saw the release of The Decoy Bride, a new, Scottish-set screwball comedy. Later in the year, we'll see Tanya Wexler's Hysteria, a romantic comedy with strong screwball elements about the invention of the vibrator in Victorian England.

Andrew Stanton's sci-fi blockbuster takes advantage of the UK's weekend sunshine to edge past The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – but grey skies and the grey pound could soon bounce back
The winner
Despite suffering bad buzz over budget overruns, an epic production process and a name change, Disney was able to trumpet a UK No 1 opening for its sci-fi blockbuster John Carter, with a gross of just under £2m. That's probably not the number Disney envisioned 26 months ago when shooting started on this pricey Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation with Pixar's Andrew Stanton at the helm, but it could have been worse. John Carter lost the box-office war to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Friday, and was still behind after Saturday, but was a convincing winner on Sunday. John Carter's opening number compares with £2.47m for Green Lantern last June – viewed as a flop that stopped a potential franchise in its tracks.

Entering multiplexes this weekend we have the first real blockbuster of the year in John Carter, but it won't be easy for Disney, as they have to compete directly with the incredibly successful animated film The Lorax in its second week. Elsewhere, horror fans can watch found footage in real time with the remake of Silent House, while the Eddie Murphy comedy A Thousand Words could be a dark horse at the box office despite an almost complete lack of marketing. In select theatres, Ewan McGregor stars in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, several Bridesmaids cast members re-unite for Friends with Kids, and Christian Slater battles evil spirits in Playback. What will you be watching this weekend? John Carter Silent House A Thousand Words Friends with Kids (limited) Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (limited) Playback (limited) Jiro Dreams of Sushi (limited) Footnote (limited) Sound of Noise (limited) The Decoy Bride...

It was a fairly comedy-centric offering last week at the multiplexes but this coming week is a wholly more eclectic affair. This weeks’ releases are set in such diverse locals as gritty English council estates, Parisian high society, the sweltering heat of India and, well, Mars. Are any of them worth your hard-earned cash at the cinema’s though? There looks to be something for just about everybody so make your selection wisely. Little update from last week’s offerings too, Wanderlust was pretty enjoyable and worth a watch if you like Apatow comedies. Project X however was truly terrible. I recommend you all avoid it like the plague.

This week on Film Weekly Jason Solomons meets the British Pakistani actor and rapper Riz Ahmed to discuss his starring role alongside Freida Pinto in Michael Winterbottom's Trishna. The film - a twist on Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles - moves the drama from the English countryside to Mumbai and sees Riz's character Jay pursue his dream of becoming a Bollywood star, while attempting to help Trishna (Pinto) escape her poor upbringing. Riz, who also recently starred in Jean-Jacques Annaud's Black Gold, tells Jason how he juggles a busy film career with being a hip-hop Mc.
In the reviews section Jason is joined by Henry Barnes to review some of this week's other big releases, including the sci-fi epic John Carter, the gangster Brit-flick Hard Boiled Sweets and David Tennant and Kelly Macdonald in an off-kilter romantic drama The Decoy Bride.

(Markus Schleinzer) Michael Fuith, David Rauchenberger, Gisella Salcher. 96 mins
The daily routine of an Austrian paedophile who keeps a young boy locked in his cellar was hardly something anyone was queuing up to see, but this challenges us, and itself, to take a look. At the same time, it thankfully averts its gaze from scenes of actual abuse. There are keen observations on parenting, privacy, power relations and more, but the flat, factual approach verges on dull, and the absence of empathy ultimately just leaves you feeling grubby. So get in line for the grimmest movie of the year!
This Means War (12A)
(McG, 2012, Us) Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon. 98 mins
Two suspiciously close CIA buddies fall out when they discover they're dating the same woman – cue the misuse of government equipment and their own combat skills for one-upmanship. The romcom high concept is novel for a good reason: it's completely ridiculous.

In her new film The Decoy Bride, we're seeing how deft Macdonald is at 'momentary dambursts of feeling'
If I were David Tennant and found myself having to choose between Alice Eve and Kelly Macdonald, as he must do in The Decoy Bride, I'd, well … there's really no argument, is there?
No disrespect to Alice Eve, but I've been watching Kelly Macdonald for 16 years and somehow it just keeps getting more and more rewarding, especially in the last few, as she's broken out of second-tier parts and started taking more leads. She brings a steely kind of mildness to many of her roles, a quality – to my eye, a very Scottish quality – few other prominent actresses have: everything held back, the eyes giving it all away, the impression of great forces clashing inside what appears to be a tiny, vulnerable frame. She reminds me of what Tom Wolfe said of...

It’s nice to see David Tennant doing idiotic romantic comedies. Oh, wait: No, it isn’t. Kelly Macdonald: Also way too good for this crap. Did the announcer really just say, “The only thing she didn’t plan for is falling in love”? Maybe this will turn out to be less idiotic and less twee than it looks. But probably not. David Tennant and Alice Eve headline the brand new British romantic comedy, The Decoy Bride. And here’s our review…
It should have turned out better than this. A romantic comedy, starring David Tennant, Kelly MacDonald and Alice Eve? With a script co-written by the terrific Sally Phillips? In a genre that Britain is generally good at?
On paper, it sounds like a decent night out at the movies. In practice, sadly, it isn’t.
The idea is good enough. Alice Eve plays Lara Tyler, one of the planet’s most famous movie stars, whose dream wedding to David Tennant’s James Arber (an author) keeps being disturbed by pesky paparazzi. So a plan is hatched: head off to a tiny Scottish island to marry (the same island that Tennant's character based his hit book around). And when that doesn’t quite work? Bring in the decoy bride of the title,...

What do Boardwalk Empire.s Margaret Schroeder, the tenth Doctor, and Marc from Ugly Betty have in common? The actors who played them are all set to star in a movie together called The Decoy Bride. The trailer for the movie, which is due for a March release, but will debut even sooner on iTunes, paints a charming picture with romance and comedy intertwined as a stand-in bride falls for the groom. Directed by Sheree Folkson, The Decoy Bride stars Kelly MacDonald, a Scottish woman who.s set to be the .decoy bride. for the high-profile (press-hounded) wedding of English author James Arber (David Tennant) and his fiance, a famous actress named Lara Tyler (Alice Eve). Just weeks after the filming of a Brad Pitt movie brought Hollywood glamour to Glasgow, the shooting of Cloud Atlas starring Halle Berry is getting under way in the city today.
The film, out next year, is based on British author David Mitchell's best-selling 2004 novel, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and features interlinking narratives that chart the story of one soul across the centuries.
It also features Hugo Weaving, Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon and British actors Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess and The Hour's Ben Whishaw.
Weaving and Berry are pictured above with Tom Tykwer, who is co-directing the film with the Wachowskis. The pictures are courtesy of Just Jared.
Most of the filming is taking place in Germany but producers say they are coming to Glasgow because of the "support and encouragement" offered by the city, as well as its Victorian-era grid street system and architecture.

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Alice Eve (The Decoy Bride, The Raven) will be playing a younger version of Olivia, the new head of the Mib when Agent J (Will Smith) travels back in time. Emma Thompson will be playing the character in the present time as leader of the agency, but Eve will be portraying the character when she’s still just a secretary.
Men In Black 3D is scheduled for release in May of 2012.

When Men in Black III re-starts production next month, Alice Eve will play the younger version of Men in Black Agency head Emma Thompson in the time travel storyline. The British actress plays Olivia, hired as secretary for the Agency in 1969. While it appears she was given the job because of her looks, Olivia is actually whip smart. Sure enough, in the contemporary storyline, Thompson runs the place. Will Smith's Agent J character is forced to travel back in time to team up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save the world. Eve just completed production on The Decoy Bride and starred with John Cusack in The Raven. She's repped by Untitled, UTA and Artists Right Group. Mib III has extended a pre-planned holiday hiatus.
