Amasia Entertainment and American Films are teaming on Reaper, the script written a decade ago by Gary Whitta, the Book Of Eli scribe who was just set to script a Star Wars film. Reaper is the stylish, neo-noir story of Virgil, a private investigator searching for his kidnapped daughter. The hauntingly beautiful and mysterious Delia recruits him to a surreal underworld where the boundaries between life and death become blurred. Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant are producing for Amasia, Stewart Hall and Devin Cutler for American Films, and Circle of Confusion’s David Alpert also is producing. American Films’ Lynne Murphy is exec producer. Lotus Entertainment is attached to handle foreign sales. It gives new life to what has been considered one of those scripts where you say, ‘Why hasn’t anyone made this?’ Said Whitta: “I’m so thrilled to see Reaper back on a track toward production with...

There are a lot of pretty outstanding prison movies out there. The number one movie on IMDb right now is The Shawshank Redemption. But my favorite part of many movies, usually sci-fi or B-horror, is when you get a glimpse at the prison systems of the future. In most cases, either prisons have gotten so out of control that they've been turned over to corporations, or they've literally blocked off vast tracts of land and let the prisoners run feral, creating primitive feudal colonies of their own. I'm always interested in dystopian futures, and it's interesting that most science fictions envisions our flawed penitentiaries eventually will break down.
Here are ten of my favorite future visions of how prisoners will be penalized. Honorable mention goes to A Clockwork Orange, which isn't really a prison movie, but does involve Alex breaking down and being reconditioned in a mental facility. Also not listed is SuperJail!

M. Night Shyamalan has chosen his next directing project called, “One Thousand A.E.”, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It would be developed at Overbrook Entertainment, a production company owned by Will Smith, James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz and Jada Pinkett Smith. Overbrook also oversaw the “The Karate Kid” remake. This film will not be written by Shyamalan, but with scriptwriter Gary Whitta. He wrote “The Book of Eli” and “Undying,” an in-development Kurt Russell project. There are no plot details, except that it is a science fiction movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is a starring role for an adult male, but it will not be for Will Smith. In previous reports, Shyamalan had a Bruce Willis and Gwyneth Paltrow loosely attached to an untitled script, but it has been shelved temporarily in favor for this project. Gig Patta’s Take: M. Remember when every single person in the theater laughed at M. Night Shyamalan‘s name during the Devil trailer? And then a few months before that the director made one of the worst blockbuster films in history?
It takes a hero to go beyond the depths of hell to redeem a man that low. That hero is Will Smith and he is bringing along his family for this intervention. Their production company Overbrook is developing M. Night Shyamalan’s next directorial effort, a sci-film titled One Thousand A.E. [THR]
Details are sparse, but this will be a different project then what we announced in June, with Bruce Willis, Bradley Cooper and Gwyneth Paltrow attached. Considering the critical acclaim of The Last Airbender, the project was never picked up and put on the shelf.

Kurt Russell is a badass and I wish he made more movies. He hasn’t graced the silver screen since 2007, though that situation looks like it will be rectified soon as he has a bunch of projects slated to hit theaters in 2011. For Kurt Russell, I am willing to wait. Joblo has a promo poster for Russell’s upcoming film “Undying”, directed by Jon Amiel (“Copycat”) and written by Gary Whitta (“The Book of Eli”), and a new synopsis. “Undying” is a stylish supernatural thriller/ neo-noir, “Undying” tells the story of Virgil, a private investigator who finds himself recruited by the darkly beautiful and mysterious Delia. Though he didn't enjoy as strong a career revival as John Travolta after Pulp Fiction, some credit is due to Quentin Tarantino for giving a bit of a recent boost to Kurt Russell by making him the crazy villain of his grindhouse feature Death Proof. He's got a few smaller films lined up like Waco and Undying, but Freedom Films announced today via press release that Russell will fill shoes not too dissimilar from some he's already worn. Russell will take on a role as a high school football coach in Touchback, the feature directorial debut of Don Handfield. Though it doesn't sound as inspiring as Miracle, sports fans may be interested anyway. Joining Russell will be: Brian Presley, Melanie Lynskey (Up in the Air) as his wife, Christine Lahti , Marc Blucas (Knight and Day), Drew Powell (1408), Sarah Wright (House Bunny), Sianoa Smit-McPhee (Hung) and Kevin Covais (College). It was officially announced today that director Jon Amiel ( Copycat ) will be sitting at the helm of Undying , a project we first introduced you to when Kurt Russell signed on to star. "I'm truly excited to be involved with this project," Amiel says. "'Undying' is a wondrously original movie - part gumshoe noir, part supernatural thriller - it manages to combine richly detailed and real characters with all the wild, dark visuals of a graphic novel. Kurt Russell as Virgil Lone will be extraordinary I think. He's an actor who's widely loved and widely admired for two obvious reasons - he's a really good guy and he's a very fine actor!" A bit of praise there... Written by Gary Whitta ( Book of Eli ), the film tells the tale of Virgil Lone (Russell), a...
