House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series that debuted on HBO and Max in 2022 and is returning soon, focuses on House Targaryen, generations before the events of the original Game of Thrones series.
They are, of course, the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), one of the main characters on Game of Thrones, whose series-long plot was about wanting to recapture her family's throne.
While House of the Dragon focuses on that particular family, we did get occasional glimpses of other familiar houses in the first season of that show, including the Baratheons. Also, there are fleeting mentions of Houses such as Arryn and Stark.
While the members of House Stark were among the most important characters throughout Game of Thrones, none of the Starks were major characters In the first season of House of the Dragon.
However, it appears that it is about to change.

One of the easiest ways to measure someone’s success is to count all the pop culture references that others make to them. In the case of Stephen King, they would probably hit a three-digit number, considering how many TV shows, movies, and other novel authors have been using King’s plots as an inspiration.
If you are interested to see 10 of the most popular TV shows that referred to King one way or the other, check out the list below.
Lost (2004-2010)
Heavily influenced by King's writing, Lost had no shortage of references and easter eggs to the author within the show. The most obvious are season 3 Juliet's choice of Carrie as a book club entry, and the future version of Jack reading a newspaper clipping with words like "Ted," "the Tower," and "beam" in it, all references to Stephen King's The Dark Tower.
Derry Girls (2018-2022)

You thought you were okay sitting on the toilet until you read Dreamcatcher. You’d happily walk past a storm drain until you read It. You’d go into a creepy boutique shop before checking Needful Things out of the library. You didn’t even mind checking into Room 217 at a hotel until you read The Shining. More than perhaps any other horror novelist, Stephen King has unnerved our collective imagination with twisted creations that stalk our everyday lives. Demonic cars, rabid dogs, alien domes, possessed caretakers, crazed fans… there’s a Stephen King monster for every day of the year, plus one extra on leap years.
With a back catalogue reaching all the way from the 1970s to now, if you stacked every novel Stephen King had ever published in a teetering pile, it would almost certainly topple over and crush you to death.

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

Famous for writing numerous successful horror, sci-fi and drama novels, Stephen King gave the cinema industry lots of sources for adapting. While some of the adaptations of his works are considered cultish, there are a number of clearly failed attempts to bring the accomplished writer’s plots to the big screen.
These include the adaptation of King’s magnum opus, a series of eight novels, which blends science fiction, fantasy, horror and Western. It was long considered unadaptable, until the 2017 movie was released, which partially proved those lasting doubts.
The movie’s plot revolves around Roland (played by Idris Elba), a gunslinger on his mission to protect the tower which supports all the world’s realities with his young apprentice Jake (Tom Taylor). Meanwhile, his quest gets disturbed by his lifetime rival, named The Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey).

Well, Mr. King, here’s your answer: the newest version of horror maestro Stephen King’s novel “Salem’s Lot” is coming out this year. Sometime. On streaming.
After initially being expected to hit theaters, New Line’s film adaptation of King’s 1975 bestselling novel “Salem’s Lot” will debut on Max in 2024, the streamer announced today. As for when in 2024, we still don’t know, and as for what this thing will even look like, still no answer there, as today’s announcement came without any sort of handy-dandy still to round out the news.
The film was first announced in 2019 and was shot way back in 2021. Last month, King himself took to Twitter (X?) to publicly wonder where the heck the film was. “Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new ‘Salem’s Lot’ and it’s quite good,” King wrote on social media. “Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build,...

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. This list ranks seven of Stephen King's engrossing page-turners...

For a guy who writes about awful stuff happening to people, Stephen King sure likes liking things. Just think about how many times he’s used his position to praise other creatives and projects. “I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker,” declared his blurb for the American release of Books of Blood. “Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel,” he said of The Fall on Twitter in 2022. “Wish I’d written it.” Heck, his horror history book Danse Macabre ends with an appendix recommending over 100 books and nearly 100 movies.
But when the 76-year-old writer praises the upcoming film adaptation of his seminal novel Salem’s Lot , King’s word carries a bit more weight. King published Salem’s Lot, about a man who learns that his old hometown has become infested with vampires, in 1975 and is still regarded decades later as...

Stephen King is urging Warner Bros. Discovery for an update on its long-awaited “Salem’s Lot” adaptation.
Legendary horror author King took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to question why the feature adaptation of his book “Salem’s Lot,” which was first announced in 2019 and shot way back in 2021, has yet to be released by Warner Bros.
“Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new ‘Salem’s Lot’ and it’s quite good,” King wrote on social media. “Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything. Who knows. I just write the fucking things.”

Described as a “high concept horror film,” the upcoming Rosario unveiled an intriguing first look image that sees a woman seemingly tormented by the corpse of her grandmother.
As if that’s not eye-catching enough, Rosario stars Emeraude Toubia (Freeform’s hit TV series “Shadowhunters,” Amazon’s “With Love”), David Dastmalchian (Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, Late Night with the Devil) and José Zúñiga (Catherine Hardwicke’s blockbuster Twilight, Sony Pictures’ The Dark Tower)

Plot: In 18th century Denmark, Captain Ludvig Kahlen – a proud, ambitious, but impoverished war hero — sets out to tame a vast, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who realizes the threat Kahlen represents to his power.

Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.
“Have you looked at Cole Sprouse? It’s very easy to have chemistry.

Carla Gugino is amazing. From her early days co-starring with Pauly Shore in Son-In-Law to indies with her partner Sebastian Gutierrez, including Electra Luxx and Women in Trouble, Gugino has shirked the traditional path many Hollywood actresses have taken. The result is a career full of unique work on the big screen and small including work with filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez, Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game), Zack Snyder, Ridley Scott (American Gangster), and more. Her series work with Mike Flanagan has included an array of roles in The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, as well as her recent turn in The Fall of the House of Usher, which garnered Gugino her first Critics Choice nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

"We're not dying for your damn heath project." Magnolia Pictures has debuted the main US trailer for The Promised Land, now set for February 2024 after being submitted by Denmark to the Oscars for 2023. The latest feature from Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel premiered in the Main Competition at this year's 2023 Venice Film Festival. The film is set in the late 1700s and is a tale of royalty and servants. It tells the story of Ludvig Kahlen who pursued his lifelong dream: To make the heath bring him wealth & honor. Mads Mikkelsen stars, along with Amanda Collin, Simon Bennebjerg, Kristine Kujath Thorp, and Gustav Lindh. Arcel's intro: "Aided by Ida Jessen's brilliant novel, Anders Thomas Jensen and I wanted to tell a grand, epic tale about how our ambitions and desires will inevitably fail if they are all we have. Life is chaos; painful and unpleasant, beautiful and extraordinary, and we often cannot control it.

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – recently went into production on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck… and now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Tom Hiddleston (Loki) has confirmed that his work on the film has been completed. While talking about the film, Hiddleston also compared it to one of the most popular King adaptations, The Shawshank Redemption!
Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.
Hiddleston is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

If I were into board games twenty or thirty years ago, I reckon my shelves would have more games like Damnation: The Gothic Game on them. As it stands today, Damnation: The Gothic Game stands alone as just about the only game here that relies on mechanisms that are no longer popular with modern gamers – specifically those involving rolling a die for movement, and player elimination. As things are today, with a general market preference for softer, kinder games, Damnation: The Gothic Game stands alone as a unique experience. It has rapidly become the meanest, most brutal and often most exciting game in my collection.
In Damnation: The Gothic Game, players each take the role of a villain inspired by literary or potentially historic characters who are thrust (presumably unwillingly) into Dracula’s Castle. Once there, they must move through the castle, explore rooms to find powerful weapons and items...

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. And now Flanagan has taken to social media to reveal the names of the rest of the characters – a list that includes A Nightmare on Elm Street...

What would you do if you were born into a family of outlaws? Would you accept that and settle in, or try to escape and lead a better life? Rose was stuck in a similar situation, where she chose the lives of her daughter and herself over those of her family. Directed by Aaron Burns, Birthright Outlaw, is a classic action thriller with several thrilling action sequences throughout and an old setting around the 1900s. The cast that had been selected for the film was top-notch, including Lucas Black, Sarah Drew, Olivia Sanabia, and others. Earlier this year, it was announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck. When the announcement was made, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars) were already on board to play the characters of Chuck and Albie, respectively… and they remain on board now that the project has secured a SAG interim agreement that will allow it to go into production during the ongoing SAG strike. An article posted on Gulf Coast Media reveals that The Life of Chuck will begin filming in Alabama on October 16th, with a production schedule of four weeks.

Stephen King is a tastemaker of terror. Ever since breaking out with “Carrie” — the sordid tale of a telekinetic teenager adapted into Brian De Palma’s 1976 classic starring Sissy Spacek — the horror author has had a hand in shaping our nightmares.
With dozens of novels, novellas, and short stories to his name, the 75-year-old writer has provided inspiration to just as many genre filmmakers. Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind Netflix’s super successful “Haunting” anthology, has two King adaptations under his belt, including 2017’s “Gerald’s Game” (also released by the streaming giant) and 2019’s theatrically released “Doctor Sleep.” He’ll take on “The Dark Tower” as his next King project, after adapting Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” for Netflix.
Frank Darabont earned his three Oscar nominations working on Best Picture nominees “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile,” both of which were based on King’s short stories.

After his 2012 film A Royal Affair received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, Danish writer-director Nikolaj Arcel did what probably seemed logical at the time: go to Hollywood. But like many directors before him who walked that same path, the results were less than ideal––his being 2017’s disastrous Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower. Six years later, Arcel returns to his home country and reunites with A Royal Affair star Mads Mikkelsen to make The Promised Land, a brutal, entertaining period piece and another showcase for Mikkelsen’s stone-faced magnetism.
Set in 1700s Denmark, the film tells the story of Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mikkelsen), a poor veteran who intends to grow crops on the Jutland Heath. Opening title cards establish that no one has been able to “tame” the Heath for decades, but Kahlen and the King’s treasurers come up with a mutually beneficial arrangement. If...

The Good Earth: Arcel Inherits the Wind with Romanticized Historical Recuperation
After making his English language debut with the imperiled Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower (2017), writer/director Nikolaj Arcel returns to mining historical obscurities in his native Denmark with The Promised Land. Co-written by one of Denmark’s most talented scribes, Thomas Anders Jensen, both reuniting to collaborate once again with their national treasure Mads Mikkelsen, it would seem Arcel was returning to the period formula which anointed his 2012 breakthrough A Royal Affair. After the first minute of “The Promised Land,” Danish director Nikolaj Arcel’s period epic set in 18th-century Denmark, we know two things. We know “the heath cannot be tamed” because the opening credits tell us that about the remote, outlaw-ridden Jutland area of Denmark. And we know Mads Mikkelsen stars in the movie.
Anybody want to guess whether the heath gets tamed?
Mikkelsen, we know, is not to be trifled with, whether he’s playing a drunken schoolteacher in “Another Round,” Hannibal Lecter in “Hannibal” or one of the all-time great Bond villains in “Casino Royale.” And “The Promised Land,” which premiered on Friday at the Venice Film Festival, is a handsome, bold two-hour tribute to the power of Mads, both the indominable character he plays and the presence he brings to the screen. “The Promised Land” needs him and he comes through with his ability to give power...

The Promised Land, the new film from Danish director Nikolaj Arcel, is a story of ambition.
Set in 1755 it follows Captain Ludvig Kahlen, a bankrupt former soldier determined to secure the royal title denied him by birth — the film’s Danish title, Bastarden, is a reference to Kahlen’s origins as the illegitimate son of a rich landowner and his housemaid — by building a colony for the Danish king in the hinterlands of the Danish heath, at the time a lawless and untamed wilderness. In addition to the unforgiving climate and hardscrabble, crop-resistance soil, Kahlen has to battle with Frederik de Schinkel, a brutal and arrogant land baron determined to claim Kahlen’s land for his own.
The premise has the makings of a classic Western: The story of one man taming the frontier. But Arcel, who co-wrote the film with his frequent collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen (Riders of Justice...

Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, who was behind “The Dark Tower” with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey – is bringing back the historical epic with “The Promised Land,” which world premieres in Venice Film Festival competition section.
Set in 1755 and based on a true story, it sees captain Ludvig Kahlen (played by Mads Mikkelsen) deciding to finally conquer the Danish heathland and build a colony there. But its ruler, Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), doesn’t want to share the inhospitable land. Or anything else, for that matter.
“Today, it’s more about action and superheroes, but I’m very interested in taking that genre, one that has gotten a bit lost, and modernizing it,” he says.
“It has this western quality because it’s about pioneers in a new land, trying to build something, but I was more interested in looking at old epics like ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ I think it’s a genre we need.

Last December, we learned that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is getting the chance to make his dream project a reality: his company Intrepid Pictures has secured the rights to make a series based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga. And even though development has come to a screeching halt due to the writers strike, Flanagan remains optimistic that the series is going to happen. During a conversation on the new episode of the Kingcast podcast, Flanagan said The Dark Tower is going to be his top priority when the strike comes to an end.
Flanagan said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “I feel really good about where we are. Oddly, where we are at the moment is completely frozen, because of the strike, but we had a wonderful spring with it and we’re making enormous progress on it. And I have every reason to...

Look, Stephen King likes to stay busy. The aughts were no exception, and by 2008, the blockbuster author had completed his long-running The Dark Tower series, delivered a Hard Case Crime novel in The Colorado Kid, penned two personal epics in Lisey’s Story and Duma Key, returned to horror with Cell, and started writing a column for Entertainment Weekly.
Somewhere in all of that ruckus, King also agreed to edit The Best American Short Stories 2007. It was during that period, however, that — in classic King fashion — he became inspired to add more to his plate: He wanted to return to the short story medium. If you recall, 2002’s Everything’s Eventual was a scrapbook of then-uncollected works. Not so for Just After Sunset.
And so, King published 12 stories in the 2008 collection, including an older relic in “The Black Cat from Hell”. In the first of two episodes dedicated to Just After Sunset,...

Six months ago, we learned that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is getting the chance to make his dream project a reality: his company Intrepid Pictures has secured the rights to make a series based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga. Although Flanagan is currently participating in the writers strike, his script for the pilot episode of the series is already complete – and he is very happy with how it turned out. He’s also feeling optimistic that The Dark Tower is going to start moving forward once the strike has ended.
Speaking with Deadline months back, Flanagan said, “The pilot script is one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to work on. It’s been surreal working on that. So we’ve been floored and grateful that Stephen King trusts us with such an undertaking, something so precious to him, and we hope to find the right partners to realize it.

There’s a lot to unpack to properly adapt The Dark Tower books by Stephen King.
There have been past efforts that fell flat, and now there’s a writer’s strike that has tied up producton. But director Mike Flanagan remains optimistic that he can bring home a compelling version, as he related Thurday at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The Haunting of Hill House director confessed that The Dark Tower was his dream project.
“That’s the one I want to do the most,” Flanagan said to moderator Justina Ireland “I have the rights. We’re on strike. But I’m very optimistic that we’re on a great path with that, we have good partners, we can’t talk about it, but I think it’s going to happen. I can’t say for certain, but we look good. So I’m hoping that’s up there.”

During a lively Tribeca Festival masterclass discussion on genre filmmaking, director Mike Flanagan spoke with writer Justina Ireland, who was in the writers’ room for Flanagan’s upcoming Netflix series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” about how he was able to continue making the series after on-set disruption.
In April 2022, Variety reported that Frank Langella, the lead of the series, was recast “following an investigation into alleged misconduct on set.” Bruce Greenwood took over the role, which included reshoots since Langella left midway through production.
Ireland asked Flanagan about the difficulty of being a creative who has to be leader on set, alluding to a difficult person on “Usher” and mentioning that the audience could Google the behind-the-scenes drama if they weren’t in the know.
Flanagan answered the question without naming specific people or incidents, saying: “The management of production is something there is no real training for.

Stephen King’s short story “The Mangler” really shouldn’t work as well as it does. The fifth tale in his first collection, Night Shift, follows an industrial laundry press that somehow becomes possessed by a demon and begins flattening laundry workers like king-sized sheets. First published in a 1972 issue of Cavalier, the story contains the kind of grisly gore and fast scares that would keep readers turning the pages even when running alongside ads for edible panties and sex hotlines. With a gory premise and loose occult references, “The Mangler” may not be the most high-brow story King has ever published, but it is 19 pages of sheer horror perfection. Part urban legend, part splatterpunk lite, the story reads like a procedural cop drama from hell as Detective John Hunton (Ted Levine in the film) tries to stop a series of grisly deaths at the hands (er… gears) of a sinister machine.

Stephen King’s best-selling novel The Dark Tower once had a 2017 film adaptation starring the likes of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. But Elba had certain issues with the feature that he felt would be controversial.

Elba played Ronald Deschain in the movie’s take on King’s fantasy series. Many King fans may know the character was the remnant of a group of protectors named Gunslingers. As the title suggests, this meant that Elba’s character was proficient at using guns.
But Elba admitted that it was an aspect of the character he felt some discomfort towards.
“I had a clash of conscience with my character. In America, there’s a real awareness of gun culture. I had to break down why he’s good at shooting.

Mike Flanagan sure does love Stephen King stories, huh? Though his career has always been horror-focused, it wasn’t until “Gerald’s Game,” based on a King story, that people started to really take notice. Then he’d go off and do the ‘Haunting’ series over at Netflix, but then he came back to film with “Doctor Sleep,” the controversial sequel to “The Shining.” Now, it appears Flanagan can’t spend too much time away from a new King adaptation (in addition to a planned “Dark Tower” series), as he preps to film “The Life of Chuck.”

The Life of Chuck: Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill to star in Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan
Deadline has reported that Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill will star in The Life of Chuck, an adaptation of the short story by Stephen King. Mike Flanagan, who has plenty of experience with Stephen King adaptations, will direct The Life of Chuck.
Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, “The Life of Chuck is three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.” Tom Hiddleston will play Chuck, with Mark Hamill playing Albie. Deadline says that the project will “draw tonally from Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redeption, and The Green Mile.” In addition to directing The Life of Chuck, Mike Flanagan will also write and produce through Intrepid Pictures.
