The DA, The Judge and Patrick Jane
claudio_carvalho24 December 2021
When the Assistant DA Kelly Flower is found murdered at home, the CBI assumes the case. Their investigation shows that the killer may be Cale Sylvan, and the CBI agents plot a trap to catch him. However, Judge Franklin T. Hildred rejects the case since Patrick Jane has illegally searched Sylvan's house. The misconduct of Patrick leads Lisbon to be suspended by Madeleine Hightower. However the CBI team proceeds the investigation. Out of the blue, Patrick breaks into the Court and discloses the real killer and his motive.

"Blood Money" is an episode where the reckless Patrick Jane is irritating. The conclusion with the identity of the killer is silly and the motive for the murder of Kelly Flower is not good. My vote is seven.

weird writing
gs2023 April 2010
this story line could have been good but the writers chose to make the villain's characters very shallow and generally non-threatening ........it's a heck of a thing when you have a dozen villains and the scariest one is an old lady in a wheelchair........i've said it before and i'll say it again ........hollywood and especially TV, has lost the ability to write scary villains .....it's really too bad.........one of the scariest things about red john is that he is invisible, and that's probably a good thing because if they showed him they would probably mis-cast the part as usual and the character would wind up weak and under-developed........i can hardly wait for that non-event..............as well, maybe it might make more sense to go with real writers instead of producers who are too busy and too young hacks who don't understand the character ..........you know who you are..............i mean, we've never seen jane act so stupidly before for no other reason than to be oblivious and passive-aggressive and totally without a plan of action.........generally his rudeness, inappropriate behavior and p-a are designed to illicit a response from a suspect.......not here.......it was like a bizarro jane from another dimension with no real relationship to the character that made the show in the first place............the whole thing was a waste of great character actors and was almost like the story was too big and poorly tailored for the writers to put into an hour(or actually 45 or 50 min.).............all in all, didn't care for it.

Going from bad to worse.
icelandknight24 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A judge is murdered, and they need to find out who did it. - Sadly, this episode is rushed through, so fast that Jane doesn't seem to have time to react to any of it, or is it just poor acting? Throughout the series Jane has had a certain detachment, which one has thought to be part of the character, but perhaps it is just poor acting? It is also SAD when one can guess the villain right from the start, however unlikely he seems to be. It is almost like a formula, if someone is introduced at the start, he's probably the bad guy! The moment I saw the D.A. I said "that's probably the bad guy!" (hoping that it wasn't! It's starting to be a bit like the expendable guys in red, in Star Trek. If you see a new face, he's probably going to get killed, or in this case, be the villain. Almost like a routine / formula.) Some surprises in the episode, since it seemed to be more than 1 plot, there were a few leads, but pointless, and Jane just shows NO emotion or concern over what he's doing. One wonders if it the character who has become so careless and secure in knowing he'll always solve everything, or bad acting! One begins to feel Jane is acting out of character, if he's supposed to care for the people he works with, but doesn't show it, because he knows the outcome, as we do? His superior is suspended because of him, and he doesn't seem to care in the slightest, and although we KNOW he's going to solve it all, and get her reinstated at the end, (as always) it's like the whole thing is railroaded through at hyper speed, before Jane can react to it! Hence the indifference? It is a contagious indifference, since the viewer starts to feel the same. There was so much going on, that this episode could have been split in two, with a cliff hanger when the serial killer gets shot, and then more involved research, or a chase, after who shot him, not just the ridiculous court wrap up they used. One wonders how much his character is paid for his consultancy, since he doesn't care that he is fined $16,000 for his silly attitude in court. Overall, a terrible episode. I will be watching the next one, since it has been an interesting series, but Jane's arrogant indifference is contagious.

I was confused throughout this episode
CrimeDrama128 April 2022
What a silly and bizarre episode! The only reason for it that I can think of is the writers and producers wanted to show that Patrick Jane has moments of mental weakness. I believe it is reasonable that someone (Jane) who is obsessed with finding the person who killed his wife and child is not mentally strong though he hides it well. I really hope the craziness we see with Jane isn't an attempt by the writers at humor. I don't watch crime dramas for the humor. I think a lot of fans of the show, like me, want Jane to be like the classic Sherlock Holmes, but he has demons that most of us can't comprehend. For the most part, the writers didn't do a great job explaining this. The show's creators couldn't expect it to run for multiple seasons if it is solely focused on Red John, similar to how "The X-Files" worked in the conspiracy mythology but yet many episodes were stand-alone. This show is nowhere near as clever as "The X-Files." I got hooked on the mythology in that show even though I have never been interested in science fiction. If you think about, most episodes never show Jane at home, where he is most likely to think about his late wife and daughter...and Red John. Is he an insomniac? Does he have nightmares? Much more could have been done with the main character.

Of the episodes I couldn't even finish, this one is the worst so far

Warning: Spoilers
My overall rating of "The mentalist"'s Season 2: 4/10.

I have unfortunately been put off more than a few episodes of "The mentalist", but usually I'd at least wait until the villain was revealed - this time the whole story was so badly-written, stupid, childish and contrived that I stopped watching after two-thirds or so. I'm pretty sure the lawyer (assistant D. A., was it?) guy is the main villain though - not only did the episode seem to lead up to it, the camera seemed to linger a bit much on him pointing the unloaded gun at Jane. Either way, this episode is so far below even the usual standards of the show that reaching it requires SCUBA equipment.
