Emily Cheever’s career was just getting started.
The 36-year-old began her TV writing career in 2020 as a writers’ production assistant and script coordinator for Legends of Tomorrow before getting hired as a staff writer for ABC’s The Company You Keep. After the drama that marked Milo Ventimiglia’s follow-up to This Is Us was canceled following a single season shortly after the Writers Guild of America strike began last May, Cheever had no job to return to when it ended in September. Like scores of other writers of all levels and backgrounds, she doesn’t know when or where her next paycheck will come from.
“People are scared. I’m trying to go back to bartending,” she says. “A lot of people are wondering what other jobs they can do. I’m close with my old showrunners, and they’re supportive of me, but they’re looking for jobs.

Exclusive: Freeform has opted not to proceed with While You Were Breeding, the upcoming Kristin Newman hourlong comedy series based on her memoir, Deadline has learned. Producers of the series, from Freeform Studios, will have the opportunity to shop it elsewhere.
The 10-episode series had wrapped production and was headed into post-production when it paused days into the WGA strike. Newman on May 13 wrote an emotional Facebook post explaining her decision to shut down post-production.
As a result, While You Were Breeding, starring Chelsea Frei, missed its August premiere date. After a review of Freeform’s pipeline in the context of Disney’s companywide content spend trim and emphasis on curation, it was determined that the comedy no longer fit the linear network’s programming strategy, sources said.

Another previously-renewed series has been canceled amid the ongoing writers and actors’ strikes. Peacock‘s Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin will not be returning for a second season, according to Deadline, which attributes it to “the length of the work stoppage” as a result of the two strikes as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA seek new deals with AMPTP. Pre-production had yet to begin on the previously-ordered new season in May (when the writers’ strike started), and according to the outlet, “such a delay would impact Peacock’s pipeline as there is already a schedule — and budget — in place for content rollout.” The same was true for two recent cancellations by another streaming service, Prime Video, which reversed Season 2 pickups for The Peripheral and A League of Their Own in August. Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin took places several years after fans last saw Adam Devine as Bumper Allen in the film franchise.

The Pitch Perfect spin-off, Bumper in Berlin, is getting bumped off. According to Deadline, Peacock is not moving forward with the sophomore season of the musical comedy series. Previously, the network renewed Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin for a second season in early January. Unfortunately, Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin is another victim of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The fight for better representation, pay, and safety in the entertainment space is delaying productions across a broad spectrum, and Bumper in Berlin is getting swept up in the fallout.
While Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin is canceled, Universal says Pitch Perfect is still an essential part of its IP library. The franchise’s Elizabeth Banks continues developing projects with the studio, and Bumper in Berlin showrunner Megan Amram still has an overall deal with Universal Television.

Peacock has reversed course and canceled the second season of its Pitch Perfect TV spinoff Bumper in Berlin, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The renewal was first announced back in January, after the show’s first six-episode season debuted on Nov. 23, 2022. At the time of the renewal, NBCU said Bumper in Berlin was the streamer’s top comedy series to date, but has not released any viewing data.
The cancellation comes amid Hollywood’s dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and marks yet another series, alongside the canceled second seasons of Prime Video’s The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, to have the plug pulled during the work stoppage. At the time, A League of Their Own co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson criticized Prime Video’s decision, writing that “to blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly.”

“Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin” has been canceled at Peacock despite the fact the show was previously renewed for a second season.
The spinoff of the “Pitch Perfect” film franchise originally debuted on Peacock in November 2022 and was renewed in January 2023. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision was made to cancel the series as the ongoing strikes in Hollywood meant that production was not able to begin as originally scheduled.
The series saw Adam Devine return as Bumper Allen as he moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin. Along with Devine, the cast of Season 1 included Flula Borg, Sarah Hyland, Lera Abova and Jameela Jamil. Per NBCU, the series scored the biggest comedy premiere in Peacock history, as it was watched by more accounts in its launch weekend than any other Peacock Original comedy to date.

Bumper Allen's exploits in Berlin won't be charted on-screen again.
Peacock has canceled Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, reversing the Season 2 renewal the show landed in January.
Deadline first reported the news, revealing that it was in relation to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
The series joins Prime Video's A League of Their Own and The Peripheral as strike casualties.
At the time of its renewal in January, Peacock claimed the show was watched by more subscribers in its launch weekend than any other original comedy at the time.
"We knew fans of the Pitch Perfect franchise were going to sing the praises of Bumper in Berlin and enjoy seeing a new side of Adam Devine's character," said Susan Rovner, then-Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming.
"Along with our partners at Utv, Megan Amram, Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman crafted an incredibly unique and charming story with new takes on iconic songs.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Whether it’s because of Covid shutdowns, reboots, spin-offs or a gap between seasons, more and more actors in Emmy-eligible shows are coming to their roles after much delay. After nearly six years together, one thing hasn't changed: Wells Adams is the perfect partner for Sarah Hyland. "He has such a beautiful, kind, generous and supportive heart for everybody he loves," Hyland tells Popsugar in praise of her husband, whom she married in a gorgeous August 2022 ceremony following a 2019 engagement (and pandemic-caused nuptials delay).

She explains, "I got a little bit of the New York edge where I'm like, 'If you do me wrong, that's on you.' And he's just so forgiving and loving and loves everybody for who they are. And I greatly admire that."

"He has such a beautiful, kind, generous and supportive heart for everybody he loves," Hyland tells Popsugar in praise of her husband, whom she married in a gorgeous August 2022 ceremony following a 2019 engagement (and pandemic-caused nuptials delay).
The "Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin star jokes that Adams, of Bachelor Nation fame, is a "much, much better person than I am." Even as this author counters, Hyland assures, "He is, he is." She explains, "I got a little bit of the New York edge where I'm like, 'If you do me wrong, that's on you.' And he's just so forgiving and loving and loves everybody for who they are. And I greatly admire that."

“Bel-Air” has been renewed for a third season at Peacock, the streamer announced on Friday.
The series launched in February 2022 as the streamer’s most-watched original premiere, and remains Peacock’s most-watched original series to date.
The dramatic reimagining of the ‘90s Will Smith sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” was inspired by Morgan Cooper’s 2019 four-minute spec trailer, “Bel-Air,” which went viral on social media. Set in modern-day Los Angeles, Peacock’s one-hour drama series imagines the beloved sitcom with a new perspective on Will’s journey from West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. As his upbringing and his new environment collide, Will navigates the conflicts and biases of a world far different from the only one he’s ever known, while striving for a second chance at success.

Peacock’s Bel-Air is nearly matching the number of seasons with its showrunners.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a third-season renewal for its reimagining of Will Smith’s beloved The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The dramatic take on the former comedy series that is inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral short was originally picked up at Peacock with a two-season order following a competitive bidding process with other streamers vying for the series.
The season three renewal marks its first vote of confidence beyond that initial order and follows a wave of showrunner changes as the drama struggled to find its creative voice. Carla Banks Waddles was recruited as showrunner at the start of season two. The Good Girls and The Soul Man alum was promoted from co-exec producer to showrunner and replaced T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson (Army Wives, Lie to Me) at the helm of Bel-Air.

“Top Gun: Maverick,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Moonage Daydream” and “Good Night Oppy” have won feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which were handed out on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.
“Top Gun: Maverick,” “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Elvis” are all nominated in the Oscars’ Best Sound category, a combined category that for the past three years has included both sound editing and sound mixing. When the Oscars had a separate category for sound editing, the Feature Effects/Foley category won by “Top Gun” was the most reliable predictor of Oscar success, but direct comparisons have been harder to make since the categories were merged.

After the successes of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" flicks, "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," and "Knock at the Cabin," Dave Bautista has pretty much solidified himself as the greatest wrestler-turned-actor of the era. Like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and John Cena before him, Bautista was originally pigeonholed in tough guy roles because of his size before producers realized, "Hey, this guy is legitimately hilarious." Bautista has been showing off a wide range of acting talent for years now, including holding his own in the 'charismatic action star meets cute kid' formula on display in "My Spy."
The action comedy was released in 2020 to less-than-stellar reviews, but according to Variety, "My Spy" was the third most-watched film on SVOD the year of release. With Bautista's star being pushed to the stratosphere, it's no surprise Prime Video was interested in a sequel. What is a surprise, however, is how the...

Prime Video has secured the return of Dave Bautista (Knock at the Cabin), Chloe Coleman (Avatar: The Way of Water), Kristen Schaal (What We Do in the Shadows), Ken Jeong (The Afterparty) and others for their My Spy sequel, My Spy: The Eternal City. Among the new additions to the ensemble in the second installment are Anna Faris (Mom), Craig Robinson (The Office) and Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin).
An action-comedy from STXfilms that Prime Video picked up for release amidst the theatrical shutdown of the Covid pandemic, My Spy told the story of JJ (Bautista), a hardened CIA operative who found himself at the mercy of precocious nine-year-old Sophie (Coleman), after being sent undercover to surveil her family. Schaal played JJ’s tech specialist colleague Bobbi, with Jeong as his boss, David.

Rebel Wilson says her contract for the “Pitch Perfect” franchise prevented her from losing weight.
The actress-writer-producer, who played Fat Amy in the 2012 musical comedy and its 2015 and 2017 sequels, told “Call Her Daddy” podcast host Alex Cooper that she could not lose or gain more than 10 pounds.
“I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight, because it was in the contracts for that movie,” she said on Wednesday’s episode. “You can’t lose, I think it’s not more than 10 pounds or gain more than 10 pounds. You have to kind of stay at the weight that’s in your contract.”
Universal, which distributed the “Pitch Perfect” films, did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Hollywood contracts can be a blessing and a curse. Some people wait for their entire careers to sign their names on the dotted line, while others must compromise their health and safety to land the gig. When Rebel Wilson signed her Pitch Perfect contract, she agreed to terms that went against her best interests and jeopardized her health. It’s easy to say she signed the papers, but when your big break is one signature away, who among us would have the fortitude to resist?

No bullshit here: Poker Face is returning for a second season.
The Peacock series created by Rian Johnson and starring Natasha Lyonne has been renewed at the streamer. The renewal comes as the first season of the T-Street and MRC Television series is rolling out, heading toward its March 9 finale. A season two premiere date has yet to be announced.
The murder mystery drama follows Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a Columbo-inspired murder-solving fugitive who, thanks to her special ability of being able to identify when someone is lying, is consistently calling “bullshit” on the homicidal liars she encounters.
The series experimented with the release format by dropping four episodes at once, followed by a weekly Thursday release of its 10-episode first season. Each episode functions as a stand-alone murder mystery — complete with a new location and cast — with Charlie (Lyonne) anchoring the series as it follows her on the...
