Exclusive: The Longest Yard is getting another set of downs.
Deadline hears that another remake of the film, which originally starred Burt Reynolds in 1974 and was remade starring Adam Sandler in 2005, is in the works at Paramount Pictures. Rodney Barnes, who was an exec producer and writer on HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, is writing.
It comes from Gunpowder & Sky, whose CEO Van Toffler was an exec producer on the 2005 version when he worked at then-MTV owner Viacom. Toffler is producing with former MTV Films boss David Gale, who reunited with Toffler at Gunpowder & Sky and who also exec produced the Sandler version.

Stars: Jilon VanOver, Eddie Spears, Tony Denison, Jon Proudstar, Jessie Prez, Rachel Cerda | Written and Directed by Steve Laughlin
Deep Woods, the first feature from writer/director Steve Laughlin, begins in quite a different location, the opulent chrome and glass offices of the architectural firm owned by Ty Ellsworth. Ty has, seemingly out of the blue, got in touch with his college buddy Nick and suggested a hunting trip. Ty wants to “experience nature before it’s paved over” and since Nick is both Native American and a game warden, who better to go with?
For the film’s first half hour, Laughlin gives us a contrast between the world Ty knows and the rural, backwoods area Nick lives in. A tribal dance, talk of wendigos, a run-in with some loggers at a bar and of course, warnings from Sheriff Hadden to stay on the trails once they’re in the woods.

Exclusive: Former MTV topper Van Toffler is back in a formal relationship with the company where he spent almost three decades as an executive. MTV Entertainment Group has signed a multi-picture deal with independent studio Gunpowder & Sky, co-founded and run by Van Toffler, former CEO of Viacom Media Networks Music & Logo Group. The pact follows Mtve’s collaboration with Gunpowder & Sky on Comedy Central’s Hot Mess Holiday movie, starring Kal Penn, which was recently nominated for two NAACP awards, and signals a push in that area for the ViacomCBS division.
Under the pact, Mtve and Gunpowder & Sky, led by CEO Toffler and fellow MTV alum, EVP Development and Production David Gale, will develop comedic movies for MTV Entertainment’s portfolio of brands and platforms.
This is a familiar territory for Toffler and Gale who built MTV’s movie business with MTV Films, which Toffler launched and oversaw and...

Melanie Chandra and Surina Jindal are celebrating Diwali as first-generation Indian Americans in Comedy Central’s Hot Mess Holiday, premiering on Saturday night.
The movie special celebrates the Festival of Lights which became more widely known as “Indian Halloween,” thanks to an episode of The Office that sees Michael Scott (Steve Carrell) attend a party thrown by the parents of Mindy Kalin’s character, Kelly. But Chandra and Jindal want audiences to know the holiday is more than that.
“People have that episode of The Office to point to and say, ‘Oh, Diwali is the Indian Halloween!’ That just carries forward and we want people to know it’s more than that,” Jindal told Deadline. “It’s so funny that we have a white guy in Hot Mess Holiday mansplaining it. It’s kind of spoon-feeding the ridiculousness of how this isn’t mainstream yet but doing it in a very digestible way.

The half-hour comedy follows Owen (Penn), a recently out man in his 40s, and his ex-wife Diana as they attempt to find their new normal and take on new relationships while continuing to co-parent together. The project also follows an unexpected intergenerational friendship between Owen and Clay, a 17-year-old trans teen.
This is a personal project for both Tolan, who came out as gay later in life, and Penn, 44, who came out a couple of weeks ago, announcing his engagement to his partner of 11 years in his memoir “You Can’t Be Serious”, published on Nov. 2.
