Subhash Ghai dumps the 60s story in 2022. Terribly outdated and squab.
SAMTHEBESTEST21 January 2022
36 Farmhouse : Movie Review -

Director, Writer Subhash Ghai's filmography before 2000 is nothing short of rich experience. This man has given us some very good mass entertainers during the 80s and 90s and has made careers of many Bollywood superstars. Right from Kalicharan, Vishwanath, Karz, Vidhaata, Hero, Meri Jung, Karma, Ram Lakhan to 90s Hits like Saudagar, Khalnayak and Pardes. After this, the director went too down to rise up again. That's what causes the lukewarm results of '36 Farmhouse'. A thriller which fails to generate any thrill on-screen, but moreover it looks outdated as if he wrote the film in the 80s, or maybe in the 60s before his debut and finally got the chance to dump the idea in 2022. There was no chance for Rajesh Sharma to save this mediocre writing, despite the talented cast and murder mystery angle. One has to slam the overall vision of Ghai, more than the director, for using all the gone-dated theories of his own films.

The story of 36 Farmhouse revolves around a murder mystery, which eventually doens't remain a mystery to the audience because we get to see the killer in the beginning scene only. A funny police investigation follows while the new members join the residence in the farmhouse for different and plausible reasons with the lockdown reference. By the time we reach the end, it solves the mystery with an extra twist that leaves you with satisfaction of keeping something alive for the climax, otherwise you knew everything already. In the meantime, the plot generates quite a spirited atmosphere with comedy, romance and family drama. In short, it's a thriller which tries too hard to be a non-thriller and believe it or not but it really becomes an engaging affair as a whole because you have that option to push it forward whenever you want on your small screen.

What works in the favour of 36 Farmhouse is the performances of the ensemble cast. We don't really get to see a talented actor like Vijay Raaj playing the lead role but with this film that rare thing happens. It's a pleasant thing indeed. Sanjay Mishra grabs his trademark comedy alright, while Golmaal fame Ashwini Kalsekar has some fun around him. Amol Parashar's accent is one thing you might like whereas his partner or love interest, we are not sure what exactly it was, Barkha Singh, looks gorgeous in every single frame. However, the hottest figure in the film is Flora Saini, who has that Femme Fatale touch, but not really explored as it should have been. In the supporting role, Rahul Singh tries to leave a mark, but the writing and screen-space of his character never really gives him any chance at all. Somehow the actors have saved it from that 'B Grade' status and you should be thankful for that.

What 36 Farmhouse lacks the most is the modern sense of filmmaking. You can't accept those 70s outdated thrills and dialogues in 2022. Even the songs. 'Aage Nikal' sounds like a typical situational funny song from the 70s, or maybe it's even worse than that. Nevertheless, it is a moody one for old-age audiences. The screenplay of the film is not boring, well, that's one more good thing out of three. But it definitely lacks the uniqueness needed for a thriller film. Director Ram Ramesh Sharma has nothing to offer with his direction techniques because it seems that he was convinced with the lackluster writing. Overall, 36 Farmhouse is a thriller with a twist, but they have failed to understand to put it at the right place. Moreover, outdated storytelling and misplaced segments makes it a passable flick.

No story, good casting
drkavitha_k23 January 2022
Why waste such talented cast without even a shred of a decent plot..such a talented filmaker couldn't come up with an at least average story...complete waste of time...shameful endeavour.

The greatest showman's magic has gone missing
msunando22 January 2022
Subhash Ghai returns on screen after over 5 years through Mukta Searchlight's production of "36 Farmhouse", now streaming on Zee5. This venture of his first OTT release is directed by Ram Ramesh Sharma for a story written by Ghai, once called the greatest showman, and dialogues written by Sharad Tripathi. The story relates to a dysfunctional family and an event at this idyllic bungalow called 36 Farmhouse, somewhere in the outskirts of Mumbai during the 2020 lockdown period.

36 Farmhouse features Madhuri Bhatia as the ailing owner of the property living there with her eldest son played by Vijay Raaz and a bunch of staff for the maintenance and upkeep of the farmhouse. There's also a housekeeper played by Ashwini Kalsekar. The backdrop is that the property will pass into the sole ownership of the eldest son, an insolvent and broken individual, depriving the other heirs to it upon the mother's death. The younger brothers appointed a lawyer to meet the mother and drive better sense into her, but his very suggestion to do so on a rainy night to the eldest son meets with indignation and violence. The lawyer is bludgeoned and hurled into a well within the premises and left for dead without a trace. Over the next 48 hours, there is a flurry of strangers into the farmhouse, one seeking employment as a chef and another as a fashion designer who turn into residents on a heap of lies. Here onwards, there's a plot to steal some jewellery, another to blossom romance and a third to make the matriarch change her mind on her will to bequeath the property, all at play simultaneously with the central theme of a murder investigation.

Consequently, 36 Farmhouse is dealing with many genres at a time - comedy, murder mystery, romance, social issues and the fallout of lockdown on the migrant workers, spreading itself wafer thin in every segment. None of the issues creates any impression as it remains explored just on the surface, lacking depth. The comedy isn't credible, the murder mystery results in an uninteresting and convoluted plot, the romance is flat, the theft of jewellery is extraneous to the whole story, and the plight of the migrant workers is just a backdrop. As such, the 109 minute film doesn't succeed in achieving anything really - Subhash Ghai seems to have lost his midas touch and we are likely to forget this venture as just another average film that we stumbled across.

Why such movie is produced?
snehald-0395922 January 2022
This was a crap. Who finances such movie and why no internal check is being made before making such movie ? Surprisingly it was Subhash Ghai's movie and no wonder he has lost his touch after Pardesh in 1996 so a movie after 25 years was just a wasteful attempt.

Subhash Ghai at an abysmal low; Madhuri Bhatia is the rare glow
nadkarnisumeet23 January 2022
36 Farmhouse review :

Released on Zee5 last friday, I saw 36 Farmhouse the very first day but was weary to write a review only for its writer-producer Subhash Ghai whose blockbusters I grew up on. It is indeed sad to note that the showman of the '80s and '90s has hit an all time creative low with this one - a supposed crime thriller comedy which ends up being a royal bore. Even with some talented cast to boast..

The outdated plot of a property will causing rift and tension amongst the family members was already explored by Ghai earlier in his disastrous Yuvvraaj (2008). Here, he recyles the same story adding some humour element which sadly falls flat. There are ample references to Covid pandemic just to look contemporary. Ooff!! Even at run time of just one hour forty seven minutes, 36 Farmhouse is a tedious watch.

The only noteworthy act from the crowd of artists comes from the grand old lady of the house - Madhuri Bhatia who once again leaves a mark in a Ghai enterprise after his Pardes (1997). The lady is classy, graceful and impressive. The farmhouse is not!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Stopped midway, boring as hell! Zee5 when will you learn!
anikb-8709923 January 2022
If Indians think that Netflix is the dumping ground for bad Bollywood films then tell them that there is a platform called Zee5 that is its daddy in having all trash hindi content. I can barely name one hindi film that is available on Zee5 that is even barely worth watching and 36 Farmhouse is just an addition to that elite trash list in Zee5.

No I mean seriously what was going on in this film? What is it's genre? A thriller? A situational comedy? Romance? What? If its all 3 then this film fails in all of them. Neither is the film tense nor is it even barely funny. In fact it is so boring that at one point you seriously question, why did i even sign up for this film? Just because i saw some top level actors in it? Maybe that is the reason but other than that, a family property related story that has been given a complete done-to-death treatment.

Shubhash Ghai is the writer of this film although it is directed by some other dude. Shubhash Ghai, the legend of the 80s-90s has not learnt to adapt with changing times. He still thinks this dated plot with an equally dated boring treatment will work in 2022. The fact that there is always a thundering noise whenever Vijay Raaz shouts or there is a shocking revelation gives it that indian serial like feeling. Shubash Ghai should stop/writing films until he understands what new gen audience need.

Performances need no elaboration. Everyone is wasted.

Overall, just stay away from this film. Absolute waste of time. Zee5 should hire a better team for reviewing these films before adding them in their collection, you see platforms like Sonyliv, Prime are doing far better atleast they have quite a number of hindi/non-hindi shows/films that are memorable but Zee5? Not one, or maybe just 1 or 2. No matter that their subscription prices too are low just 500rs that too they sometimes give discount to desperately sell their subscription cuz even they know noone is gonna buy their subs as there is nothing worthy to watch.

Sameer lodaya

Totally boring piece of entertainment by great Subhash ghai

The script is of the farm house ownership which is to be transferred from the mother to her respective children but they are fighting within themselves and there occurs a murder..the entire movie is shoot in a farm house showed under the lockdown period

The movie goes in a very slow pace with no connections of characters with the scenes..the scenes are too long and boring..the actors like Vijay and Sanjay were wasted with poor performances..cartoonish humour was presented...pathetic songs with poor climax end the movie

Don't see this boring farm house.

It's a terrible excuse of a movie !
just_ashishsingh26 January 2022
The movie is just way too painful to watch and what is more painful is the fact that it's a movie written and produced by Subhash Ghai - he is the music director and lyrics writer as well btw. And he fails miserably in all departments!

The movie has a great cast but all are wasted courtesy dated and stale writing and direction. So please avoid at any cost... if you are a Subhash Ghai fan, better watch one of his pre-Yaadein movies. And if you know Subhash Ghai by any chance please ask him to retire gracefully.

Literally regret watching this.
chiragjan10 February 2022
Watched it just for vijay raz and amol, but they too could not do anything. No detailings in story, no realism anywhere. Only thing to watch in this movie is mithika bhabhi's cleavage and that too is there in one scene only. So overall I'll advice you to not even think to waste time here.

Ramsay's horror was better
shaikhsakir27 April 2022
Rare combination of great cast with worst story and direction. Cast like vijay raaz, amol parashar, sanjay mishra and Ashwini kalsekar is thoroughly wasted. Once a celebrated director like subhash ghai brings us shame of his life. Even novice person would have made better than ghai! I feel like going to actual farmhouse to minimize this hangover of 36 farmhouse.

Don't Waste Your Time In This Absolute Boring & Nonsense Movie !!!
cs_rahul_prasad26 January 2022
Written by Subhash Ghai and directed by Ram Ramesh Sharma, 36 Farmhouse is set amidst the backdrop of the lockdown and revolves around a few eccentric characters who end up in a mansion.

Padmini Singh (Madhuri Bhatia) is the owner of a lavish farmhouse and 300 acres of land. When she falls severely ill, her eldest son Raunak Singh (Vijay Raaz) manipulates her into giving away her estate and land to him. But Padmini has two more sons, and they are at loggerheads with Raunak. The two sons are filthy rich but they still want an equal share in their mother's property. Because of this dispute, a murder takes place in the farmhouse. Raunak Singh becomes the main suspect.

The two brothers, who hardly appear in the movie, lodge a complaint against Raunak for killing their lawyer at the farmhouse. The police raids the farmhouse but doesn't find anything. The rest of the story is about how the murder mystery gets solved and who the actual murderer is.

Sanjay Mishra plays JP, the cook at 36 Farmhouse. He lands the job randomly while he is on his way to his hometown because of the lockdown. Amol Parashar plays JP's son, Harry. He ends up at the farmhouse because of Antra (Barkha Singh), Padmini's grand-daughter. Harry is Antra's assistant and is surprised to find his father at the farmhouse. Then there's Ashwini Kalsekar, who plays Benny, the caretaker who's also a thief.

Story wise, 36 Farmhouse hardly has any meat to keep you engaged. Yes, there's a twist at the end, but that hardly makes up for the otherwise boring story. Sanjay Mishra is hilarious and the saving grace of this film. But the role doesn't do justice to this actor's talent. His banter with Amol Parashar is fun to watch, as is his 'affair' with Benny.

Vijay Raaz and Amol Parashar give decent performances. But Ashwini Kalsekar should stop doing the same sort of roles. She needs to experiment. Barkha Singh and Madhuri Bhatia are strictly okay.

36 Farmhouse could have been a better watch as the lockdown concept with strange characters stuck in a farmhouse does sound exciting. But the makers fail to deliver with an ineffective, boring script. Watch the film only if you're a Sanjay Mishra fan.
