Netflix and Dreamworks Animation have announced that they have a new slate of animated series projects in development that are set to launch next year. One of the most exciting projects that came with the announcement includes a revival of the classic 80s series She-Ra: Princess of Power!
I hope that the series turns out to be good. I think it's something that my girls are going to love. I'm sure most of you are familiar with She-Ra, but if not, she is also known as Princess Adora and is the twin sister of Prince Adam a.k.a. He-Man. She was kidnapped as a baby by the Horde's leader Hordak. She is eventually given the Sword of Protection, which parallels He-Man's Sword of Power, gaining the power to transform into She-Ra.
The series is being developed by showrunner Noelle Stevenson, who is the Eisner-winning co-creator of Lumberjanes. Here’s...

Happy Halloween! Or, rather, Happy Morning-After-Halloween! There’s nothing better to cure a candy hangover than cartoons. In honor of this indulgent holiday, here’s something of an indulgent (if brisk) extravaganza of horror cartoon history. Animation brings a unique skill set to horror and suspense. On the one hand, the difference in the representation of physical space dramatically changes the ability to produce jump scares. It’s not that it’s impossible to put instant shrieks into cartoons, but the impact is different. The fear in animation is often less visceral, more slow-burning. Animators can create self-contained stylistic universes with very specific moods, and terrifying ones at that. A great scary cartoon can sink into your soul, keeping you up at night with memories of something that will never quite fit into the waking world. They’re masterpieces of suggestion and imagination, showing that an image need not be possible in the live action world to...

ABC has bought two more hourlong projects. My Life, Deleted, from ABC Studios and Matthew Gross’ studio-based Gross Entertainment, is based on Scott Bolzan’s bestselling memoir about navigating life after suffering a severe case of permanent retrograde amnesia. Without any memory of his family, his past, or even the relationship between a husband and wife, 46-year-old Bolzan had to completely rebuild his life. Megan Holley, writer of indie Sunshine Cleaning starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, will pen the adaptation. It will use Bolzan’s life story as a jumping point, centering on a successful business man who suffers a head injury that wipes away all of his memories. The show follows him as he uncovers the darker elements of his corrupt past and rediscovers his feelings for his family, while experiencing the wonder of life through fresh eyes. Guillermo del Toro to produce animated 'Day of the Dead' -- so just how crowded is this man's plate?
Guillermo del Toro signed on this week to produce the animated film Day of the Dead, a star-crossed romance that revolves around the Mexican holiday, EW has confirmed. The independent animation studio Reel FX is behind the film, and is aiming for a 2014 release. It also enjoys the stature of being at least the 14th yet-to-be-released project currently in the works to bear del Toro’s name.
That’s right: 14. Actually, it’s 16, since del Toro co-wrote the screenplays for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again while he was attached to direct them. But...

[1] After the critical and commercial successes of Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2, producer Guillermo del Toro is preparing to team up with DreamWorks Animation once more. Del Toro is slated to exec produce a new animated feature titled Alma, about a little girl drawn into creepy toy store. Though the imagery is plenty sweet -- as you can see in the header image, the titular character is just plain adorable -- there's also an underlying spookiness to the premise that could be a great fit for del Toro's sensibility. Former Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas is set to helm the movie, which is based on his own short film of the same title, while Sunshine Cleaning writer Megan Holley has been tapped to pen the script. More details after the jump. Blaas' film was well-received when it premiered in late 2009, garnering over 1 million plays on Vimeo by March...

DreamWorks Animation is moving forward with a feature-length version of the doll-themed animated short film "Alma" reports The Los Angeles Times.
Former Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas, who created the short, will direct the feature. The original short followed a child who wanders into a creepy doll store and ends up in a compromised situation. You can watch the full short below.
Megan Holley ("Sunshine Cleaning") has been hired to pen the script while Guillermo del Toro is set to produce. del Toro will offer guidance on the project much like he did for Dwa's just released "Puss in Boots".

Many people think that DreamWorks Animation is in a constant battle against Pixar. That’s because they are. However, the near-total domination from Disney’s arm means that DreamWorks gets a bit of leeway as the underdog, and they’ve capitalized on that standing with some offbeat and clever choices for production. It’s that mentality that must have given them license to bring Alma to life. The beautiful, unnerving short film from Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas (which we featured on the site back in September) is going to grow into a feature length film under the tutelage of Guillermo del Toro and the team over at DreamWorks. With any luck, they’ll maintain the crawling sensibility featured prominently in the story of a young girl in a toy store. To that point, there’s an odds on chance that the feature will feel a lot like the short simply because DreamWorks has the brass buttons to...

Guillermo del Toro, who executive produced Puss in Boots, will work again with DreamWorks Animation on Alma, another animated film based on a the popular short film (below) by Rodrigo Blaas. The former Pixar animator will also helm the feature, which is being written by Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning). Alma is adorable, but the vibe is wonderfully creepy--we hope (perhaps futilely) that DreamWorks keeps it that way--not to mention the gap in her teeth. A potential animated franchise with a female lead who isn't a princess? Yes, please, we need more of those!

DreamWorks Animation has decided to move forward with a animated feature with Guilermo del Toro called Alma. The movie is based on a wonderfully frightening short film about dolls that steal the souls of children that was created by Rodrigo Blaas. The story centers on a young girl who gets lured into an enchanted toy store, drawn in by its beautiful collection of dolls, including one that looks just like her. She discovers only too late that the shop is nefariously intent on adding her to its permanent collection.
Del Toro helped successfully steer DreamWorks Animation latest movie Puss In Boots in the right direction. I still haven't seen the movie, but I hear that it's hilarious. I guess Del Toro proved to the studio that he can bring magic to the films he touches, and they now want to see what he will be able to do with Alma.

This weekend Dreamworks’ Puss In Boots came in #1 at the box office and has seemingly cemented Guillermo del Toro’s future with the company. Del Toro collaborated with Puss in Boots’ filmmakers to a degree that he earned an executive producer credit on the picture. And now 24 Frames has revealed del Toro will be helping to develop another Dreamworks project Alma, based on the quirky little short you can view in full below:

We've talked a bit about his upcoming short La Luna, but he has another one in a similar style you can see now. I am consistently annoyed by Guillermo del Toro, the trade news coverage of del Toro, and the importance that movie blogs seem to afford projects with which he's attached. He's a great director -- at least when he's working on Spanish-language films (Cronos, The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth), but he's only been an average one when it comes to English-language flicks (Hellboy, Hellboy 2 and the less than mediocre Mimic and Blade II). Yet, he's allegedly one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood, despite the fact that his biggest box office success was the $82 million made by Blade II.
What's even more annoying to me is how popular he has become during these last three years, a period in which he hasn't made a single film, although his name has been attached as producer on a few stinkers like While She Was Out and the box-office failure Splice.

Rodrigo Blaas is in advanced talks with Dreamworks Animation to adapt his own short animation film Alma into a full-length feature.
Blaas – who has lent his hand to a number of Pixar films, including Finding Nemo and Up – will write and direct the adaptation, while none other than Guillermo Del Toro himself, who recently signed a consultant deal with Dwa, will executive produce.
According to THR, Alma “centers on a young girl who gets lured into an enchanted toy store, drawn in by its beautiful collection of dolls, including one that looks just like her. She discovers only too late that the shop is nefariously intent on adding her to its permanent collection.”

Guillermo del Toro's new residency at DreamWorks Animation has already begun to pay off in creepy, thrilling ways. The Pan's Labyrinth director, who signed a deal last month to make his own films and shepherd others at the animation studio, has set up Rodrigo Blaas to make his feature directorial debut with Alma, an adaptation of his own five-minute short. Blaas is a Pixar veteran, actually, with credits on Finding Nemo and Up but made Alma on his own time while working at the studio. Watching the short (embedded below), you can kinda see why-- it's got a far spookier vibe and slower pace than the shorts you usually see preceding Pixar features, telling the story of a girl visiting a toy shop that features a doll that very much resembles her. Blaas brought the film to the L.A. Shorts Fest, where he won the award for best animation.

For the retrospectives, first, Kenneth Anger will be in attendance at the festival for two programs of his classic work, including Fireworks and Scorpio Rising. Plus, for the first Anger screening, the filmmaker will be joined on-stage by film critic Dennis Lim for a discussion of his work and career. For some time now, we've been in love with the art of short filmmaking, but we've never found a good way to cover them. So once a week, we will bring you a short film that we've enjoyed, or that we find interesting, in a new feature we call Sunday Shorts. This week, Sunday Shorts presents Rodrigo Blaas' Alma.

Did you get that one special gift you really, really wanted for Christmas? If not—well, it could be worse. Check out Alma, a short animated film by an up-and-coming Spanish director named Rodrigo Blaas, to see why. Like a Pixar short crossed with a Twilight Zone episode, Alma—which has garnered acclaim at various film festivals—spins a haunting fable about a cute young girl who sees a doll in a shop window, falls in love with it, and goes in and tries to get it—only to... Well, just watch it for yourself for a little holiday chill—and when you're done,...

For Your Consideration - The Battery's Down, the musical theater loving web series from New York-based creator Jake Wilson put out today what appears to be the first ever musical For Your Consideration video for The Streamy Awards (above). The riff on "All I Want For Christmas" stars former Wicked star Shoshana Bean and doubles as the show's holiday release. Wilson and co. have officially raised the bar for Fyi campaigns this year. [YouTube] TheStream.tv raised over $7300 in 24hrs for a charity—The Pablove Foundation—that helps kids with cancer this past weekend during their live on-air #streamathon. Now that's making good use of live web shows! [theStream.tv] Dinosaur Diorama made a holiday video of their own, a "special extra-funny" episode of their Greg & Donny series—"Gregeneezer and the Three Monsters" (below). Will Gregeneezer avoid the fate of his old partner, Jacob Donny? [Dinosaur Diorama] Rodrigo Blaas, a Pixar Studios animator, released his first ever independent short film,...

Leading the news in decisions made in Hollywood that should never have been considered, much less funded, we find out that Columbia Pictures is going to let Phil Lord and Chris Miller direct the big screen adaptaion of the 1980s hit 21 Jump Street that launched Johnny Depp's career and causes Richard Greico to throw a bottle at the television whenever it's mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I watched 21 Jump Street. I also liked Lord and Miller's last project, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I just don't think any of those things go together in 2012, which is when they're releasing it. Fantasy casting - go!
I live in a moderately small town in West Virginia, so whenever I get to mock another place, it's like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one. Today, we have Laredo, Texas, which has achieved the dubious distinction of being the largest...

Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas took time off to make his directorial debut with an animated short film titled Alma. Originally from Spain, Rodrigo Blaas has worked in animation for more than ten years, and was able to collect some of the best artists in the field to be part of his independent project: French animator Bolhem Bouchiba, character designer Carlos Grangel and Sergio Pablos, ArtDirector Alfonso Blaas, music composer Mastretta and sound designer Tom Myers. At the 2009 Fantastic Fest, I was on the jury for Best Animated Short film, and fought hard for Alma. And while I was unable to convince my fellow jurors to name the movie Best Animated Short Film, we were able to award the film with a "special mention", which is basically the runners up prize. The short tells the story of a young girl who becomes intrigued by the contents of a mysterious toy shop.

A merry Christmas to you from director Rodrigo Blaas, apparently. With his animated short Alma winning much love on the festival circuit and requests coming in for people not on the festival circuit to have a chance to see it, Blaas has opted - in the spirit of the season - to make the complete short available online for a limited time. Enjoy!

If there's one thing I know about film festivals, it's that being content with having your film play for an enthusiastic audience is for losers. Chugging a beer on stage in front of a cheering crowd after winning is for winners. You can tell that I'm right because the word "winning" is a close cousin of "winners." Celebrating the art of the film is one thing, but damn it, it's about taking home the coveted cup. Two or three nights ago (the details are hazy), Fantastic Fest Co-founder Tim League emceed an awards ceremony that featured some Festival fans, filmmakers and the people who wandered in already inebriated and looking for the karaoke party. You can guess which group I was in, and, yes, I stayed at the ceremony despite a shocking lack of amateurs singing "Baby Got Back." Also, I had to present all of the awards for the Fantastic Features Category. There...

For those of you who weren't in Austin, TX from September 23-30, you missed out. Fantastic Fest lived up to its name and presented some of the newest, most anticipated, and best films of the year. From the comfort and coolness of the Alamo Drafthouse (which serves Awesome food during movies) to the palatial Paramount Theater, Austin showed that it knows how to treat fans of genre films.
Think about it: Seven days filled with movies like Zombieland, Paranormal Activity, and Survival of the Dead, side-by-side with some truly creative short films, foreign films, low-budget indie movies, and stars, all put within a mile of each other. It was a movie-lover's paradise. But alas, all good things must come to an end (until next year), but not without a few parting shots.
Below are the announced winners of the various Fantastic Fest contests, and while I can't say I agree with all the decisions,...
