Endings are important...
MsHoneyBee12 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was really a bummer for me because the ending did absolutely nothing for the story. Endings really are important. We get invested in characters and situations and then we're just pushed onto our butts at the end like a cruel prank.

I think they wanted to shock us but I found it a predictable and unreasonable ending...

As for the whole of it, I was really invested with the story overall. I liked the characters, felt their pain and was rooting for them. Maybe that's why I hated the ending so much...

Sigh... I really wanted more from this series.

Atmospheric Fun

Warning: Spoilers
This episode actually played out a little better than some of its predecessors. The pacing was a little more even this time around (though I notice these episodes tend to drag a bit in the middle), and the storyline was actually something interesting. The whole thing played like an homage to The Hills Have Eyes and The Descent, proving that going for a hike in the woods is never a good idea!

Finally evil children!
sjohansen-69-19540227 August 2021
If there's one thing we all agree, is that the best horror movies (hi Stephen King, I'm talking to you!) have creepy children in it. Children of the Corn, Pet Sematary, The Shinning, IT, Storm of the Century, The Ring... So many! Even Chucky! They all have children involved in a big way. It was time for AHS to touch the subject for real this time. Baby Michael Langdon does not count! And I love the feral child! No mercy! Everything is better than the 2 1st episodes!

Kind of good, but with major problems
hnt_dnl15 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Right off the heels of the great Ba'al comes the successor episode FERAL. I can't knock this episode for not being as good as Ba'al as it would have taken a lot to live up to it, but at least it had a horror premise that I was very interested in. Paying homage to such famous slasher flicks like Wrong Turn and The Hills Have Eyes, this episode Feral is about a grieving couple (excellently played by Aaron Tveit and Tiffany DuPont) whose 5-year son disappeared during their camping trip in the cold opening scene. Flashforward 10 years to the present and the now divorced couple are drawn back to the woods of their traumatic experience by a hunter (well played by Blake Shields) who claims to have seen their son and gives them a picture as proof. During the search, the trio run into the local oddball ranger (a miscast Cody Fern, more on him later) who appears to know more than he's letting on.

While the premise was interesting and involving due to the persuasive performances of the actors playing the parents, I REALLY disliked Fern's character! For some inexplicable reason, the writers decided for Fern's character to be Australian, which I really don't get the purpose of that. He's successfully played 2 American characters in previous AHS seasons and does a great American accent, so I don't understand why the need for the Aussie accent. Also, the accent sounded incredibly off and it reeked of bad acting. Also, why was the character so apathetic about everything and why would he be crazy enough to continue living and working in a place where there are all these cannibalistic creatures roaming the woods?

Additionally, there were several plot holes with this episode. The first is less of a plot hole and more of a complaint, but the parents looked the same in both the flashback and the 10-year flashforward. People change a lot after 10 years and they both looked the same. Next, why weren't they angry at the ranger for keeping quiet about seeing their son the day he was kidnapped? You're face-to-face with someone who could have helped save your son and you just give him a dirty look and move on? And off of that, why did the ranger take the chance to incriminate himself by revealing this information to them when he seemed hellbent on keeping Feral Nation a secret and was part of the government conspiracy? Finally, why did the Ferals decide to attack the ranger after 10 years when they had so many opportunities to take him out before? He wasn't the one who messed with them. It was the tracker and his crew.

Overall, while I quite liked the creepy woods setting, plot, and acting of the episode, unfortunately, the writing and execution was lacking in parts. I will say that the writers really nailed the scary, horror movie vibe, but unlike Ba'al, there were also plot holes along with it.

Nice premise, poor execution
jackrlove3112 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The running theme throughout the show so far seems to be they take an interesting idea, then try to cram it into 40 minutes and have it be satisfying. The only episode so far that has done this right was Ba'al (the murder house episodes were good too but there were two episodes so I don't count those). I like the set up for this episode. Missing people in the national parks is one of my favorite horror subgenres. The explanation for the creatures came at about the time that made sense narratively, but then there were only 5 minutes to finish the episode. That's not nearly enough time to have a satisfying conclusion. The twist is easy to call from a mile away, and it is glossed over too fast for it to hold any emotional impact. I don't understand why the creative team has to limit these to 40 minutes. I'd rather have each story take up two episodes and be fleshed out than the same experience each week of getting hyped for an episode that has inadequate pacing.

This is what Wrong Turn should've been
IzzyMaeDoorite15 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For the first time in the entire show this is an actual American horror story. The previous episode about mischief pregnancy was high above the first three storylines but lacked that feeling of true national "folk" fear unlike ghosts, aliens, witchcraft or historical oddities, be it circuses or New England settlers. This is what makes Feral a real highlight of this troubled spin-off.

A couple losing their beloved son during a camping is already a solid thriller plot, but adding ferocious Wrong Turn-esque inbreds felt like a pivotal detail for making this story a bona fide AHS episode. Some might feel Feral could've been slightly longer or more substantive but let's pretend that the creators were terrified of the previous episodes scripts' quality and decided to play safe with this one without adding more scenes that could possibly ruin everything.

Cody Fern, although billed as the lead actor, gets a pretty small yet important part of local park ranger who knows some weird things. Aaron Tveit, previously seen as an unnecessary adulterer in the second episode, makes a huge improvement with his new character of a devastated father and failed husband. The said feral people are surprisingly creepy and distinctive, each earning their own unique design.

This is not only what Wrong Turn should've been. This is what the whole American Horror Story universe should've been since it started to lose its roots circa season seven. The most ironic and sad thing is that Feral was created by Manny Coto (Dr. Giggles) in his first directing credit in 20 years. Maybe it's a sign for Ryan Murphy to step aside and get a little bit of well-deserved rest.

Terrible ending!
mrskatiawolfe15 August 2021
The acting, as usual for all AHS episodes, is great. The story had a promising start, then it just....ended. It felt like the writers wanted to shock more than build any sort of connection with the audience. This new AHS franchise is very hit or miss.

Why did it take so long for Ryan Murphy to get it right?
corinneppierson12 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It astounds me that this show actually has gone anywhere since the disaster many of the first episodes are but with the return of actors like Cody Fern and Billie Lourd- the AHS universe returns to its natural state.

This episode was by far my favorite even over 1x05 because of its absence of supernatural entities and actual eeriness at points. One example of something that actually evoked an emotion resembling fear was when the creatures watched on and cocked their heads while the parents and Birch walked on down the pathway through the park.

I genuinely liked some of the characters particularly Addy and Stan. The acting and charisma of Stan's character actually made him likable and charming while Addy's emotional grieving mother mixed with her unresolved feelings for her ex gave a compelling performance as well.

The ending I actually predicted from when the son was kidnapped in the first place and that actually means the storyline was followable so good on them! Overall a stellar classic American Horror Story addition that I adore.

Only good episode of the season
jimbowclock3 September 2021
Do not get what people liked about baal. That in my opinion was the worst episode of the entire season. Acting was bad, story progressions were weak, the script was God awful. It was a sad attempt at copying the original show. This episode was absolutely amazing until the last five minutes. Performances were fantastic and story was so interesting. It crapped the bed in the last five but, still better than anything else this show has to offer.

American bland stories
WhenAmyMetSalad12 August 2021
So far Ba'al is the only above average episode of this series everything from emo rubber lady to this episode has tarnished AHS as a whole. What are they thinking associating this series with AHS anyway? Very bland writing and really off directing that doesn't fit AHS. This has me worried for season 10 of AHS with the direction this series is going.

Convincing performances
xroastedink13 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Really, I loved the tension between the two main protagonists. The acting was all-around much better than episodes 1-4. I found myself asking, "Is this a good guy or bad guy or what?" through a lot of the episode. The balance of the story leading up to action was great as well. I think the pacing of this was the best so far. You didn't have to wait until the last five minutes to experience anything horrific.

Spoilers ahead...

A lot of people were upset about the ending. What did you think would happen when the kid spent a good chunk of his key, developmental years living as a feral person? He probably felt abandoned by his parents, then subjected to all manner of violence. Did you see his face? He was just GONE. I don't think it could have ended any other way.

Costumes and score on this episode were fantastic, as well as the opening sequence.

The ending ruins it all
wlion211012 August 2021
This is the second best episode of the season so far imo but it's nowhere near good. Unlike the first few episodes the protagonists here (along with Billie Lourd's character last week) are actually relatable. I actually feel for the couple's pain after their son goes missing. And I like the idea of these mutant cannibalistic people living in the woods, being covered by the government through the setting up of national parks. BUT, the ending really ruins everything for me. It doesn't explain anything or give the story any meaning at all after all the builds-up.

I like AHS, but I've totally lost my hope for this spin-off. They should cancel this series after the finale next week.

This Had Potential

This had the potential to be SO good and the ending just bombed. Most of these short horror stories are terrible and make me miss the old AHS days. Come on Ryan Murphy get it together please!

Calling people shills *yawn*
NotAFakeReviewer29 August 2021
If you don't think it's good and I do that doesn't mean I'm a shill it means we have different tastes. Pretty simple, get over it.

This spin off has been entertaining as hell.

This one had a s1 of supernatural feeling to it and I loved it. Brutal, nasty and gory.

People complaining about no explanations 🙄 use your damn imaginations! Not everything needs a 3 hr back story and a 10 part netflix mini series.

Go back to your ari aster borefests and take your snobbery with you. Some of us still like to be entertained.

Loved this episode, wanted more from Cody Fern
awessel-5811730 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I loved loved loved the setting for this episode. The whole time I was thinking about how I haven't seen anyone write a breakthrough horror story about a national park or Sasquatch. This episode combines those elements and more to create an edge-of-your-seat experience where you're constantly questioning what's going on and are eager for answers. One thing I was let down with was the utilization of Cody Fern, who kind of took a backseat in this episode. Otherwise, great episode!

This episode is in my opinion not quite as good as the previous one, but definitely better than the other ones. The acting is okay, but I wouldn't say the episode is anything special. It is quite predictable.

Cody Fern and other actors do not deserve this...
mefecig12 August 2021
The actings are good. The characters are somewhat loveable. The character of park ranger was very cool and sassy. But the cinematography and the overall plot of this episode was absolutely unbearable. What a waste of 39 minutes... I hope the final episodes are similar to the quality of Ba'al, not this waste. Ryan Murphy better gives some effort to this because it has been a downfall of the whole AHS series.

Mediocre acting and completely predictable storyline. AHS yet again uses their hot boy actors to oversell the show.

Feral
bobcobb30129 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This began as a really interesting episode of American Horror Stories: you take every parent's worst nightmare of losing their child and then you dig in deep with the trauma and impact it would have on a marriage.

They gave us a creepy individual who claimed to have knowledge and they started on the hunt to find him. Then it just got really weird. They went The Hills Have Eyes or any of the dozens of movies about inbred mountain people killing.

It did have some classic horror value to it, but overall it just felt a little bit too goofy. I wanted a good twist or something and instead we just got Rob Zombie-esque horror and guts.
