A very creative show
link3671 June 2010
This show is one of the most creative shows I've ever seen. The set is my favorite part because there is always something new or interesting to look at. For example, there is sometimes a rave going on in the freezer. The main character is a little strange at first but then you fall in love with her and her antics.

There is sometimes a story but who cares about that. If you want a good story go watch HBO because its amazing. But Food Party is a show you can just watch and laugh at. This show has so much heart it reminds me of something Michel Gondry would do. I think this show would do better on a network like Cartoon network on adult swim.

Go watch this show now!

I'm not sure why I enjoy this show
edelbeb1 October 2010
The acting is bad and the production values are dismal, and the stories are simplistic (although the show does not qualify as camp). Yet, despite or because of the above, this show is original and hilarious. Even though I don't use drugs, the Barney/Julia Child/Sherry Lewis on acid/stoner vibe hooks me. Also, the people involved with the show enjoy what they do, and their enthusiasm is infectious.

It's tempting to imagine this show with better acting/production. But the ingredients of Food Party are finely balanced and blend to form an offbeat yet tasty dish. Changing any of those ingredients risks ruining the meal.

You don't need drugs to enjoy this but it helps.

Food Party is one of the most surreal shows i have seen since Pee Wee's playhouse there both very much alike. Thu Tran the host is one the few Asian Americans in a comedy on TV that does not act like a stereotype. This whole show looks like it was made on drugs the set art the puppets the special effects and the food all appear to be inspired by pot shrooms and LSD surreal shows like this are right up my alley it's nonsensical fun and make little to no sense. This reminds me a lot of a lighter verison of geek maggot bingo with the cheap panted background. the puppets are Italian chef who is voiced by Peter van Hyning the shows Writer and there's baguette a french bread Voiced by Zachariah Durr another writer. There are some trippy effects like a tie dye puppet that tru makes a glowing tie dye cookie from she trips out after eating it.I became a Fan of this just after hearing about it I hope Thu Tran the other people involved do more projects I have heard of Thu's talent in cooking and prop designs that was used for the series.

greatest comedy show on television

Warning: Spoilers
If you like the craziest, zaniest and cheapest television comedy and aren't offended by anything, then this is the show for you. I love it. Thu is an absolute scream and so are the other "actors" especially Peter and whoever the guy is who played "Mr. Misery", a Curt Cobain knockoff. I record the show (because it's usually on late at night in between movies on IFC) and watch it later many times over.

The cast are basically all unknowns from New York City who possess distinct character and personality but probably couldn't find enough work to put them over in the business, so they do "Food Party". I hope the show lasts for a few more seasons and after it's over the company puts it out on DVD so it can be preserved.

fabuloso

I didn't think this show was real when I first saw it... however, when I confirmed that I hadn't fallen through a portal and into some sort of alternate universe, I was floored by its awesomeness. The show's host, Thu Tran, exists in a bizarre, pastel-colored liminal zone, somewhere between the Food Network, Duchamp's Dadaism, Yo Gabba Gabba, and Warhol-esqe pop art. It's undefinable, really, and totally unique. If you're looking for something that you can compare to something else you've seen (as the previous reviewer was, apparently), this is not the right show to watch. If you're in the mood for some highly-enjoyable bewilderment, however, this is the way to go! I'm a huge fan--kudos to IFC for giving the show a chance.

Rare gem
jstarkey417 October 2021
Silly, weird, unique, low budget, creative, dumb, and hilarious. It always manages to get a laugh out of me. It's in the same vein as Peewee's Playhouse but aimed at adults. I'm glad I came across it on IFC. It felt like discovering a little comedy treasure.

Jaw-droppingly whimsical.

I never saw the first season of Food Party, but what I have seen of season 2 has consistently left me staring shell-shocked at the screen while the credits roll. In a good way. Take Pee Wee's Playhouse, the Mighty Boosh, Hello Kitty and a cooking show, throw them all in a pot, stir vigorously and what you get is Food Party. The show's lack of polish may be off-putting to some (there's always the Disney Channel, guys), but to my mind it serves to expose the creativity at work here. Mercifully low-budget creativity. The secret ingredient is Tran herself, whose child-like demeanor and deadpan acting make me feel like I'm eavesdropping on a little girl's stuffed animal tea party. Except it's more like a little girl's stuffed animal imaginary cooking show adventure. Food Party is a crazy change of pace.

I really don't know what I just watched...
Bash_McNasty22 August 2009
I'm really not sure what to say about this show. I would like to point out that I am 22 and watch all the goofy/random shows such as Whitest Kids U Know, Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Xavier: Renegade Angel, etc. This show is just insane. Even compared to those.

I gave it 6 stars because it did make me laugh a few times, although I couldn't tell you if it was because something was funny, or because sheer confusion gave me no other option. If you haven't taken a large quantity of drugs, I really don't see you enjoying this show. You have 2 options watching it: you can try to make sense of it, which will just leave you kicking yourself in the head, or you can just accept it for what it is, and then probably just find it extremely dumb.

For whatever reason I did watch a few episodes hoping that maybe it would begin to make more sense, and the answer is no it did not. Now if you want to watch something that is unlike anything you've ever seen before, this is definitely the show for you.

Back to the drawing board
hmservant15 April 2010
I have watched six episodes of this show on IFC and found nothing about it to recommend. Even though it is supposed to be funny (I think), I didn't laugh once. The plots are very simplistic, which in itself is not detrimental. Yet, when the actors appear visibly anguished to be associated with the show, it does tend to detract from the experience of watching it. The sole person who seems to be enjoying it is Thu Tran, who, although energetic enough, lacks the acting ability and professionalism to pull off the feat of starring. She seems like a nice person and is quite lovely; however, she simply isn't funny and I have seen better acting in grade school plays. I realize it is her show, but if Greencard Productions is committed to the show, it should seriously consider replacing Tran with a person of talent.

Poorly written, terrible acting, barely ANY jokes
amiller497115 August 2010
Like the reviewer above me I watch good television shows like Tim and Eric awesome show, tom goes to the mayor, Xavier renegade angel, trailer park boys. I wanted to check out this show because when i saw a commercial it looked like they knew what they were doing but when I watched an episode and then another and then another I decided it was a terrible show. Thu Tran the star of the show is such a bad actor its hard to explain, a little better in season 2 but not really. this is a TV show for kids who watch family guy, is an invader zim idiot, well any of those bad shows. This show is trying to copy what Tim heidecker and Eric wareheim have created and fails at it because there jokes are half ass. I'm sorry but this show is terrible.
