According to Variety, the long-in-the-works remake of 1986 sci-fi movie Flight Of The Navigator is moving forward with Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson now writing the script. Back in 2012, a pre-Jurassic World Colin Trevorrow was tapped to helm the remake, but his career has gone through some twists and turns since…

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.
Without further ado, here's what's coming up...
Akira
One of Hollywood's most on and off projects, the current state of the live action Akira remake is that it's back in the works. Marco J Ramirez, the showrunner for season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil show, has been hired to pen a screenplay. Warner Bros is still backing the film,...

Colin Trevorrow is the man to direct the trilogy-closing Star Wars: Episode IX, it's been confirmed...
It's hard to believe that Star Wars: The Force Awakens hasn't even opened yet, and we're already looking two movies into the future. But now we know that Star Wars: Episode IX will be directed by Colin Trevorrow. He'll follow Rian Johnson who is directing Star Wars: Episode VIII. Johnson is also writing Star Wars: Episode IX.
"Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe".
Trevorrow added, "this is not a job or an assignment.

Exclusive: director Colin Trevorrow's involvement with the planned Flight Of The Navigator remake looks like it's over...
It's been some time now that we heard news on the planned remake of Flight Of The Navigator. Off the back of the success of his excellent debut feature, Safety Not Guaranteed, Colin Trevorrow was chosen to direct the film, with regular collaborator Derek Connolly penning the script with him.
However, Trevorrow then got hired to direct Jurassic World, which finally lands in cinemas next week. And when we got a chance to chat to him about the film, we asked about the status of the Flight Of The Navigator remake.
"I think it's moved on", he told us, pretty much confirming that he's no longer involved with the project. Instead, Trevorrow is next to direct The Book Of Henry, which he describes as a "smaller film", and one "I'm really passionate...

Ahead of the UK release of Jurassic World, we talk to director Colin Trevorrow about Jaws, Spielberg, and the film's most horrifying scene.
The last time we caught up with director Colin Trevorrow, it was ahead of the UK release of his sci-fi rom-com, Safety Not Guaranteed in 2012. And how times have changed since; within months of that interview, Trevorrow and his writing partner Derek Connolly (who wrote Safety) had agreed to take on a fourth Jurassic Park movie - a project stuck in a production quagmire for more than a decade.
Trevorrow and Connolly's fresh perspective seemed to grease the gears on the project, and now, here it is: Jurassic World, the bigger, more evolved sequel to a series that hasn't been seen on the silver screen since 2001. Its story could be seen as a reflection of the filmmaking duo's journey from the east coast to the cutthroat landscape of Hollywood: in the movie,...

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard feature in a new clip from the forthcoming Jurassic World...
Nb: While the following clip's only brief, you may want to avoid it if you want to watch Jurassic World absolutely cold.
There are precious few dinosaurs in this extended first clip from Jurassic World, but there's plenty of talk about them - as well as a bit of flirty banter.
The footage establishes a past relationship between Chris Pratt's rough-and-ready dinosaur keeper Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard's clean-cut Claire Dearing, the park's operations manager. Among the chatter, there's foreshadowing of Jurassic World's as-yet unseen genetically modified creature - "you went and made a dinosaur?" Owen asks, incredulously - and mention of the park's now "tame" flock of velociraptors.
It's a curious clip, if we're being honest, but if you're wondering what Jurassic World will be like aside from the inevitable running from hungry dinosaurs,...

Catch the first footage from Jurassic Park 4 - Jurassic World - in the new trailer, that's just landed...
So then, the story so far. The fourth Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World, arrives in cinemas next summer, on 12th June 2015 in the UK. If you live in Belgium, Luxembourg or France then you've hit the jackpot, as it's out on the 10th there. But for the rest of us, it's the 12th. So let's go with that.
Colin Trevorrow is directing, landing the job off the back of his excellent debut feature, Safety Not Guaranteed. And he's brought together a cast that includes Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson (not the BBC's political editor, as we confirmed here) and Irrfan Khan. Bd Wong is the only returnee from previous Jurassic Park films that we know of.
The film is also comfortably one of those we're most looking forward to (it scored very,...

Okay, if Lynne Ramsay exiting "Jane Got A Gun" wasn't already the biggest surprise news of the day, this probably would be. David Lowery, who seemed to be everywhere at Sundance in January, as the writer of"Pit Stop," editor on Shane Carruth's "Upsteam Color," while unveiling his own massively well-received effort "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," has plotted his next movie: dude is going to Disney World. Deadline reports that Lowery along with his writing partner Toby Halbrooks have been hired by Disney to pen a new take on the studio's 1977 film, "Pete's Dragon." "I imagine a lot folks are about to be very confused..." Lowery tweeted this evening, and perhaps that may be the case, but it wouldn't be the first time the Mouse House has gone indie. Remember, Disney also hired "Safety Not Guaranteed" (and now "Jurassic Park IV") helmer Colin Trevorrow to redo "Flight Of The Navigator" for them,...

It seems pretty cute to think about the time when "Safety Not Guaranteed" helmer Colin Trevorrow was rumored to direct "Star Wars: Episode 7," but another mammoth sequel is now in his lap, with fanboy expectations that will certainly be very high. Though Steven Spielberg was briefly rumored today in certain corners (he's still producing), it's Trevorrow who has emerged to direct "Jurassic Park IV." This is a massive jump from little indie to mega-franchise, but it's not entirely a shock. He's made impressions with the right people, with Disney already tapping him to write and direct their "Flight Of The Navigator" remake. And with Trevorrow teasing last year that he was involved with a project with some "mythology" behind it, perhaps this was it. And this is moving very fast. Nola reports that Universal has already booked studio space in Baton Rouge from April to November, and with a...

The director of the wonderful Safety Not Guaranteed has landed the job of making Jurassic Park 4...
Now this is an inspired choice. Speculation has been rife for some time as to the identity of the director for Jurassic Park 4, not least since it was confirmed that the movie was set for release in 2014.
Would it be Jurassic Park III helmer Joe Johnston? Nope. Steven Spielberg? Not him either.
Instead, it's Colin Trevorrow. The same Colin Trevorrow who made the brilliant, brilliant Safety Not Guaranteed. The same Colin Trevorrow who is also linked to a remake of Flight Of The Navigator.
Presumably Flight Of The Navigator will be on hold for the immediate future though, as Trevorrow will need to get down to work quickly. He's got about 15 months to finish the movie, assuming Universal doesn't shift the release date. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes...

Might it be time for us to find a fresh bunch of faces to link with every directorial opening on a blockbuster franchise?
The appointment of Jj Abrams as the director of the new Star Wars movie has brought to an end - hopefully - a game of speculation that now seems predictably rife whenever a major franchise is in need of someone to steer it. It's as if the infamous line from Casablanca - "round up the usual suspects" - has formed the cornerstone of who-will-direct-which-film speculation.
We're not playing holier than thou here, as we're as guilty of what we're about to talk about as anyone, but it's getting just a little depressing that the publicly acceptable circle of blockbuster directing talent seems so small. It's also got to the point, it seems, where unless it's Joss Whedon's name that's attached to a potential project,...

Review Ryan Lambie Dec 20, 2012
A blend of drama, romance, sci-fi, mystery and comedy, Safety Not Guaranteed is a must-see winter movie, Ryan writes...
Ever since Hg Wells sent a Victorian hurtling into the future in his 1895 novel The Time Machine, science fiction writers - and later filmmakers - have been playing around with the time travel plot device. Wells didn't invent the time-travel story, but his notion of building a time machine certainly popularised it, and it's this idea that's popped up repeatedly in popular culture ever since.
Safety Not Guaranteed is the latest film in that grand tradition, incorporating elements of the romance and longing in Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return (filmed as Somewhere In Time in 1980), and perhaps even a dash of the 1960 film adaptation of The Time Machine in its production design.
Safety Not Guaranteed's eclectic cast of characters each have their private regrets and fading dreams.

Disney’s remake of Flight Of The Navigator has acquired a new pair of writers in Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. The Safety Not Guaranteed director (Trevorrow) and writer (Connolly) will rework an initial script turned in by Brad Copeland (best known for his work on Arrested Development). The appointment would appear to be a shrewd move, seeing as the pair tackle time-travel and comedy to great effect in Safety, and they could bring a rough-and-ready charm to Flight Of The Navigator. According to Variety’s report, the remake...

Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment will update the CBS 1960's TV comedy series "Gilligan's Island" as a big screen feature.
The original 98 episodes of "Gilligan's Island" created by Sherwood Schwartz, starred actor Bob Denver ("Dobie Gillis"), Alan Hale, Jim Backus and Tina Louise, following the 'wacky misadventures' of two crew members, a millionaire couple, a professor, a movie star and a girl-next-door, on an uncharted, uninhabited island in the Pacific.
Schwartz also composed the theme, "The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle", that opened each show:
"...Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man,
the skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
for a three hour tour.
a three hour tour.
The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,...
