Ed Gass-Donnelly left a huge impression on me a few years ago with the release of Small Town Murder Songs (review), a little Canadian thriller with Peter Stormare in a rare leading role.
The movie garnered Gass-Donnelly a lot of attention including being named one of Variety's "10 Directors to Watch" in 2011 which lead Gass-Donnelly to head to Hollywood to direct The Last Exorcism Part II. That movie turned out to be a disaster but Gass-Donnelly has persisted, taking it as a learning experience and continuing to make movies on his own terms.

Canadian director Ed Gass-Donnelly arrived on the scene in 2010 with the outstanding Small Town Murder Songs (review). It wasn't his first film but by that point, it was clear that he was ready for the next big step.
That seemed to come with The Last Exorcism Part II except that movie failed to deliver anything of interest so Gass-Donnelly packed it up and headed back North and in the last few years, has co-directed a short film and released another movie, one that looks to be more in line with the talent on display in Small Town Murder Songs.

I fell hard for director Ed Gass-Donnelly after seeing his sophomore feature Small Town Murder Songs (review). Gass-Donnelly didn't quite manage to meet the high bar set for himself with the pedestrian and completely forgettable The Last Exorcism Part II but it looks like he's back on track with his latest.
Lavender stars Abbie Cornish as Jane, a woman who loses her memory after a car accident. Her doctor recommends she return to her childhood home in an effort to jog her memory but the trip brings back childhood memories she'd rather forget.

I have no doubt that one day gifted visual storyteller Ed Gass-Donnelly will make a brilliant work. With four features under his belt, including This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs, The Last Exorcism Part II and now Lavender, he’s shown tremendous promise capturing haunting images that externalize the internal conflicts, horrors and phobias of their subjects. His latest is a meditative horror film that, despite masterful visual direction and captivating performances, falls back on familiar horror/thriller tropes, courtesy of the screenplay by Gass-Donnelly and Colin Frizzell. Students of the genre will be far ahead, although they may admire the muted, understated style even if you how the blocks will fit together.
Abbie Cornish stars as Jane, a young mother suffering from memory loss following a car accident. She’s haunted by the specter of her past. With an apt and horrifying sequence, young Jane clenches a knife...

The criminal caper that goes wrong is always good for a suspenseful, absorbing thriller movie. Just from memory there is The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, (almost any classic film noir dealing with a criminal undertaking, if it didn’t go wrong it wouldn’t be noir now would it?) Odds Against tomorrow, Reservoir Dogs, Bob Le Flambeur, Rififi, and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.
The list is just about endless, in fact, precious few movies about criminals show the heist going off without a hitch. Add to that list 7 Minutes, a tough, unblinking look at a caper done by amateurs so desperate they are willing to risk everything to try and pull it off.
Sam (Luke Mitchell), Mike, (Jason Ritter, son of John and showing some good acting chops) and Owen (Zane Holtz) lead small town lives of quiet desperation. They try and make some money through drug...

Director Michael Bay took a hiatus from his Transformers movies to bring his sunset-drenched filmmaking style to the crime comedy Pain & Gain.
The movie stars Mark Wahlberg (Ted), Dwayne Johnson (Faster) and Anthony Mackie (Real Steel) as a group of bodybuilding personal trainers. In pursuit of the American dream, they get caught up in an extortion ring and kidnapping scheme and, of course, everything goes horribly wrong.
Tony Shalhoub (Feed the Fish), Ed Harris (Man on a Ledge), Ken Jeong (The Hangover Part 2), Peter Stormare (Small Town Murder Songs) and Rob Corddry (Warm Bodies) also star in Pain & Gain.
The film got mixed reviews from critics, called “crude and ugly” by CNN.com‘s Tom Charity but “may be the best movie Michael Bay’s ever made” by the Newark Star-Ledger‘s Stephen Whitty.

The classic fairy tale gets a new twist in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

After years hunting witches, they face an evil greater than anything they’ve seen before, and one that could destroy the world.
The R-rated film, which also stars Famke Janssen (Taken 2) and Peter Stormare (Small Town Murder Songs), was written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow).

It is, it appears, an exciting time to be Eli Roth. A player on the Hollywood scene for over a decade, thanks to the runaway success of Cabin Fever, Roth was propelled to notoriety by the Hostel movies, and earned himself both commercial triumph and critical censure thanks to his seeming status as banner-waver for the so-called torture-porn subgenre that boomed in the Noughties.
Going into a new decade, the torture-porn phenomenon still seems to be going strong, as various film-makers continue to try and shock jaded audiences with ever more creatively-extreme shenanigans. Roth, however, seems set on diversifying his gruesome portfolio, with a spooky exorcism thriller sequel, a cannibal exploitation movie, and a horror TV show; he’s even got an evil clown movie on the horizon. Having attached his name to the well-received The Last Exorcism, it looks like Roth is set upon emphasising that he doesn’t...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s back! The actor turned governor has come back to action movie starring roles with The Last Stand.
Schwarzenegger (The Terminator) plays Ray Owens, a former Lapd narcotics cop who, after bungling an operation, goes to work as the sheriff for the sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. He has to get his big guns out again when the notorious leader of a drug cartel (Eduardo Noriega, Vantage Point) escapes an FBI prisoner convoy.
The R-rated film also stars Forest Whitaker (Pawn), Peter Stormare (Small Town Murder Songs), Luis Guzman (The Count of Monte Cristo), Johnny Knoxville (Small Apartments) and Harry Dean Stanton.
The Last Stand was largely ignored by moviegoers when it was in theaters, grossing a not great $12 million in wide release. Drama Promised Land grossed more than half that on far fewer screens.

Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana. Back in the relative safety of New Orleans, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning.

Made on a small budget, the 2010 Eli Roth produced horror flick The Last Exorcism was a surprise hit and turned such a nice profit that it secured a sequel. The trailer for that sequel has arrived today, with the storyline picking up where the first film left off. Ashley Bell returns as Nell Sweetzer, who is trying to build a new life following the events of the first movie, but the evil force that once possessed her returns. Ed Gass-Donnelly writes, directs and edits the sequel with Roth retuning in a producer role. Gass-Donnelly has helmed a pair of features including 2010's Small Town Murder Songs. There's certainly a more dramatic tone to this film as opposed to the original, which had horror-thriller director Daniel Stamm at the helm. Are you looking forward to...

Despite the initial absurdity of making a follow-up to a movie called The Last Exorcism, I've been pretty curious to see how The Last Exorcism Part II would deal with the shocking end of the first film. The big twist was somewhat divisive among viewers but it definitely opened things up from a story standpoint. Now it appears that the sequel will pick up a few months later with Ashley Bell reprising her role as Nell Sweetzer. The story finds Nell trying to start a new life while dealing with what little she can remember of the horrific events that took place on her family's farm in rural Louisiana. What she doesn't know is that an evil force is still pursuing her. The movie is directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) with Eli Roth returning as a producer, but it seems to have done away with the found...

In the second Last Exorcism, Nell (Ashley Bell) has moved on from the old farmhouse, but even as she tries to have a normal life, the demon that rose from the fire in the first film has different plans. Because demons make plans. Forgetting the ridiculous title, the film boasts two key strengths. The first is Bell — who was steely in the first film and gets a bigger spotlight here. The second is co-writer/director Ed Gass-Donnelly, whose most recent work was the beautiful crime flick Small Town Murder Songs. The Cajun setting is also pretty promising. Watch the voodoo for yourself: If anything, the trailer itself is a little messy, and that church scene will probably look a lot better for anyone who sees the movie without catching the advertising, but all the elements are there. Plus, Bell really can do some bizarre stuff with her body. Hopefully we get a nice little possession to look...

If Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) is going to make a sequel to Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism, then the first film should be renamed to Almost The Last Exorcism, or The Second to Last Exorcism. With the financial success of the first film, filmmakers are returning to this material, likely, to take another swipe at the piggy bank. A lot of questions were left in the original film, but nothing breeds sequels quite like success. In this sequel, Nell (Ashley Bell) is again possessed and again an exorcism is performed. Maybe Nell needs to change exorcists. Now, the first poster for The Last Exorcism 2 has been released. Nell is doing her backbreaking best to create a 2 as the film threatens a March, 2013 release. Her hanging crucifix does not seem to helping her predicament. More details on the film's release are listed below. Release Date: March 1, 2013. Director: Ed Gass-Donnelly.

Taking a cue from its predecessor's striking, artful one-sheet (left), The Last Exorcism Part II has brought back the bend. This rendition, it's fair to say, boasts far more cheese. Although, "the second coming" tag is (maybe?) interesting. Is it purely a play on the religious aspect and return of her demon aggressor, or does the child and the group's plans for it factor heavily in this sequel. It seems they would have to, right?

Due to its success at the box office, The Last Exorcism wasn’t really the last and we’ll be seeing a sequel next year. While we’ve already reported on some of the plot details, but here’s a new official synopsis from Afm:
Via Collider: “Eli Roth & Strike Entertainment bring us an even more terrifying and bigger scale sequel to The Last Exorcism that grossed $70 million worldwide. It looks like Nell Sweetzer’s last exorcism was not foolproof. She is back… and so are her demons.
Continuing where the first film left off, teenage Nell Sweetzer is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby. Confused and scared, Nell is examined by doctors but she doesn’t remember much about the previous few months except that as a result of everything,...

A sequel to The Last Exorcism was officially announced in January, with Ashley Bell returning as Nell Sweetzer. It has been said that the movie will take place 3 months after the events of the first film and new plot details have been revealed:
Via Bloody Disgusting: “The sequel follows Nell (Bell) who, six months after the first film’s events, has move to a halfway house only to realize that the demon that has ruined her life is still after her! Without giving anything away, the sequel takes an interesting romantic approach that’s spun around Nell’s new boyfriend, Chris (I’m not sure who’s playing the character). A subplot is that Bell is also targeted by a group of rogue Reverends who mean to kill her. The twist is something never before seen in an exorcism film.”
Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) is directing, with filming taking place in New Orleans.

The surprise success of The Devil Inside earlier this month has made studios eager to rush even more low budget horror films out the door, and in addition to Paranormal Activity 4, another sequel that will be hoping to capitalize on this continuing trend is The Last Exorcism 2. That probably won't end up being the film's final title, of course; producer Eli Roth has joked that coming up with a new title will be perhaps their biggest creative challenge. He also acknowledged that the original movie's title clearly indicates that they never intended to make a sequel in the first place, but they just "love the story and subject matter" and they believe they have "an inspired idea to continue it." One of the original film's stars, Ashley Bell, will reprise her role as the possessed girl Nell, but director Daniel Stamm will not be returning. Instead he will be...

If the dreadful ending of The Devil Inside didn’t put you off of found footage horror flicks forever, then this weekend’s announcements of two new films featuring the gimmick should give you something to look forward to. Proving that there’s no truth in advertising, Eli Roth and company have announced plans to start filming a sequel to The Last Exorcism in New Orleans next month. Deadline reports that filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly (of Small Town Murder Songs fame) will take over directorial duties from Daniel Stamm. When a horror movie that costs very little to film has a strong box office performance, it will usually have a sequel greenlit. That is even the case for films like The Last Exorcism - which despite the name has a sequel on the way. Deadline reports that the sequel will not be directed by Daniel Stamm, the first films director. Instead, Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) is set to direct based on a script by Damien Chazelle. That didn’t take long. With the moderate success of The Devil Inside and the Paranormal Activity franchise closely becoming the new horror genre trend, it’s no surprise that producer Eli Roth (Hostel) would want to capitalize on the possession film. The PG-13 film The Last Exorcism grossed $68 million on a budget less that $2 million, is set to begin shooting its R-rated sequel next month with a new director, Ed Gass-Donnely (Small Town Murder Songs).

The Last Exorcism was one of 2010′s sleeper hits, grossing over $60mil worldwide on a budget of $1.5mil, so it should come as no surprise that a sequel has been in the works. That follow-up has been put on the fast track after the recent opening weekend success of The Devil Inside, and now The Last Exorcism 2 has a director in Ed Gass-Donnelly.
Gass-Donnelly is relatively unknown, his most notable outing being 2010′s Canadian-lensed crime thriller Small Town Murder Songs. Eli Roth will again be producing, and star Ashely Bell will return as Nell Sweetzer. The script is from Damien Chazelle.
Plot details on The Last Exorcism 2 are scarce, but Empire is reporting the film picks up a few months after the original left off, continuing with the story of a charlatan exorcist who bumped into a very real possession.
A release date has yet to be announced.

So I guess The Last Exorcism wasn't the last? Maybe they should retroactively change the title to The Penultimate Exorcism. Reminds me of a Monty Python bit where Leonardo da Vinci paints The Penultimate Supper with kangaroos and 20+ disciples, and the Pope is really not happy. To be fair, I bet the Pope isn't too happy with The Last Exorcism /an untitled sequel either. Interesting connection there. Ed Gass-Donnely (Small Town Murder Songs) has been chosen to direct. Ed Gass-Donnelly ("This Beautiful City," "Small Town Murder Songs") has been hired to direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 horror/thriller hit "The Last Exorcism" for Arcade Pictures, Strike Entertainment and Studiocanal says Deadline.
Ashley Bell starred in the $1.5 million-budgeted PG-13 original film which ended up grossing $70 million worldwide. That story centered on a charlatan exorcist facing a crisis of conscience who invites a documentary crew on his final exorcism where he comes across the possessed Nell (Bell).
The sequel will pick up three months after that film left off, although further story details are being kept under wraps. Damien Chazelle penned the script.
Producer Eli Roth says "we want to go deeper and darker this time. The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers". Shooting kicks off next month in New Orleans.
