Stefan Marold was beaten to death in the prison shower, while awaiting trial for a millions fraud case at his employer's expense. All convicts refuse to talk, even Werner Gieß, Marold's only protector inside, obviously intimidated. Marold originally set up the secret accounts to finance his boss Christian Schmeil's many bribes, but started siphoning a large share abroad, while blackmailing Schmeil. All other detectives being known in jail, captain Kaiser must go undercover as 'transferred convict' and befriends Werner Gieß, the only match for prison bully gang leader Andreas Belzig, whom a star lawyer was promised, by Schmeil, to silence Marold. After Marold's corpse is stolen from the forensic morgue, whizkid Rico cracks Marold's musical accounting code, which later matches with the tattoo on his arm as key for the parallel accounting, which yields another suspect accomplice: Marold's lover Cornelia Mehring.

Shortly after engagement as marketing chef in Stuttgart firm "Airbird" and moving there, Anja Rottenberg is beaten to death in a park. Husband Hajo Rottenberg stayed in Hamburg, but mourns sincerely, albeit ignorant she had a secret abortion, apparently putting her career first as there's no trace of a lover. Bernhard Löw, whose post Anja succeeded, is desperately indebted, so regaining the job is an obvious motive. Checking the firm accounts, Rico discovers much of he marketing budget was spent on a campaign for an nonexistent Asian market awarded to Paul Schober's agency "werbezeit", becoming its sole super-client, which Anja may have found out. Marketing assistant had a secret affair with Paul Schober.

Private cardiac surgery clinic partner Dr. Ludger Kreilinger dies in his car from a shot in the heart. Kreilinger's clinic partner professor Markus Huber's sports car left trails at the site, he claims Ludger was already dead when he arrived for a meeting. Kreilinger was cancer-terminal and shot with his own gun, possibly suicide or mercy killing. Shattered fresh widow Kerstin offers alibi nor explanation, claiming to ignore his cancer. Manufacturer Thomas Gause sold cheap bypass equipment to prof. Huber which are only approved for veterinary use, Kreilinger threatened to expose them, so Huber is arrested. IT specialist Rico Sander however finds a suspicious patient death in a routine surgery Kreilinger and Huber performed recently.

During another illegal rave party in a restored WW II air shelter bunker, the corpse is found of utilities contractor Gero Kimmich, whom conservation society president Walter Schiller regularly hired, but not then. Schiller adds Gero hated the untidy parties as well. IT-Spezialist Rico Sander identifies on Internet illegal party organizer Philipp Burgemeister, who denies having been there but his flash light is found, with fingerprints, yet maintains he found Kimmich already dead, while he also kept from the police dating the contractor's unruly teen daughter Lucy Kimmich. Philipp's wife Suse cashes a fat life insurance, enough to pay the family's debts, and she bought the murder weapon. FInally a whole other angle is added: Gero Kimmich was about to tear open a wall behind which a skeleton is found, stabbed during the 1960s, when restoration was started by the Scillrs and some friends, including his love rival Thomas, who matches the corpse.

After an interrupted alarm at the Stuttgart police, wrecking yard employee Mirko Hanisch's corpse is found on a rural road, a staged accident. The call was made posthumously with his cellphone. Synthetic DNA on his cloths. Microscopic copper threads trace to a major theft on his yard that night, not the first. His partner Jasmin Lenske acts shocked and incredulous, claiming ex-con Mirko Hanisch was fully reformed since they went steady. Her own, missing ex-con brother René Lenske would make a perfect cahoot and is found by tailing her, but manages to escape. Managing yard owner Martin Hoppe is also suspected of connivance, as well as employee Rüdiger Böhme, who has an alibi. Parole officer Irina Falke conspired with René Lenske, leading to a dangerous finale.

Peter Schotts alibi is as fake as his wife Maria's while their sock kid daughter needs proper lodging. Desperate moves follow, while Rico works out diabolical financial machinations.

The same fate befalls a brave passerby jogger, whose robot picture fits atypically late police IT specialist Rico Sander. Danger mounts when the kidnapper learns Rico is a cop and demands a 2 million Euro cash ransom, remarkably fitting the Gerber family's fortune, suggesting an insider accomplice. Ariane 's ex-con womanizer boyfriend Dennis Müller must deliver it, but the police river patrol finds his corpse in the Neckar, having refused to prove his 'loyalty' by shooting Rico, who has the same profile. Rico must deal with the brutal killer and an escape plan while his colleagues work out how Ariane's maternal inheritance in parental trust management become the motive as her father's ailing company needs cash injections.
