‘AHS: Delicate’ turns out its best episode of the season with a flashback-focused installment that recants Adeline’s brutal backstory.
“We don’t have to stay where we’re born…”
Hestia, the namesake of AHS: Delicate’s antepenultimate episode of the season, is the Greek goddess of the hearth, home, and hospitality. This may seem like a benign thing to celebrate, but what is a family without a proper home? A home is the safe support system that keeps a family secure. To take this one step further, what is a womb if not a baby’s first home before they’re thrust into the world? Hestia is regarded as a goddess who’s both soft and strong, which are extremes that are forced upon every mother, whether it’s Anna, Adeline, or even Ivy. It’s a fundamental dichotomy that very likely will be the key to Anna’s...

American Horror Story: Delicate has been off to a strong start with its unique season. After an encouraging pair of introductory episodes, “When the Bough Breaks” proves to be the season’s slowest, most atmospheric, and least substantial entry. American Horror Story at least understands that Jennifer Lynch is the right person to get behind the camera for an episode that’s sparse in dialogue, but dense in cryptic sequences where characters explore caverns and haunted spaces that shouldn’t exist. If nothing else, this energy really keeps the audience on their toes over what’s actually happening and what might just be some figment of Anna’s feverish fugue state. The viewer is just as foggy and disassociated as Anna. Just like how Anna’s face blemish/likely-spider-nest continues to grow, American Horror Story: Delicate further develops its story. Anna’s worsening facial imperfection reflects the slow burn surface...

A new season of “American Horror Story” is upon us. Believe it or not, “AHS” Season 12 actually marks a couple of firsts for the ongoing franchise – it’s the first to be an adaptation instead of an original story, and it’s the first with a female showrunner as Halley Feiffer wrote every episode of the season herself.
It’s also the season with Kim Kardashian.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, “American Horror Story” debuted on FX in 2011 and didn’t reveal itself to be an anthology show until that season finale, in which almost every main character died. Since that time, each new season of “AHS” is treated as an event, as Murphy and Co. have traversed a variety of horror genres.
For those wondering exactly when they can watch “American Horror Story: Delicate,” everything you need to know about Season 12 is below.
When Did “American Horror Story: Delicate” Premiere?...

Documentary festival IDFA, which runs Nov. 8 to 19 in Amsterdam, has revealed its first 50 titles, including the top 10 Chinese films selected by Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing, IDFA’s Guest of Honor.
The festival has also revealed the films playing in two of the three Focus programs: Fabrications, which probes the difference between reality and realism, and 16 Worlds on 16, an homage to 16mm film.
Wang’s selection will take the viewer “on a contemplative journey into contemporary Chinese cinema,” according to the festival. “The films and their politics are subtle in their film language, representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.”
The selection (see below), which covers films produced since 1999, includes Lixin Fan’s 2009 film “Last Train Home,” which was supported by IDFA’s Bertha Fund. The film documents the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.

Morris Chestnut has been tapped as the male lead opposite Yaya DaCosta in Fox’s new drama series Our Kind Of People, from writer/executive producer Karin Gist, executive producer Lee Daniels, 20th Television and Fox Entertainment.
For the past two seasons, Chestnut has been a series regular on another Fox/20th TV drama series, The Resident. Morris’ casting in Our Kind Of People is not an indication that The Resident is coming to an end. The medical drama’s Season 5 renewal is expected to come today as Fox unveils its 2021-22 lineup.

A couple find themselves the target of a madman in a familiar retread of early 90s psycho-from-hell thrillers that squeezes enjoyment from tired cliches
After its peak in the early 90s, the psycho-from-hell thriller, typified by films such as Fatal Attraction, Single White Female and Pacific Heights, died a villain’s death at the box office, only rearing its head infrequently in the years since. In the late 00s, Sony’s genre label Screen Gems spotted a gap in the market and started pumping out variations on a cookie-cutter formula but with one key difference. Films such as Obsessed, No Good Deed, The Perfect Guy and When the Bough Breaks have been almost universally populated by actors of colour in strict opposition to the all-white thrillers that came before them.

Michael Lynne, the former co-chairman of New Line Cinema who played a key role in shepherding “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, has died at his New York home. He was 77.
Lynne’s death was confirmed Monday by longtime business partner Robert Shaye, who told Variety that Lynne’s family had informed him of Lynne’s passing following a short illness. Lynne and Shaye had been associates for nearly four decades with Shaye focusing on the creative components while Lynne brought expertise on the financial side.
“He was a once-in-a-lifetime partner and the perfect counterpoint to what I was,” Shaye said. “It was one of the great professional associations. Even though we went to law school together, he had the background and finesse that I never developed so we balanced each other out. I will miss him greatly.”
Shaye also noted that Lynne’s son Jonathan Lynne had died a few weeks ago.

This Mother's Day will see Avengers: Infinity War push toward $550 million domestically while a pair of new releases battle it out for second place. Warner Bros. and New Line's Life of the Party and Universal's Breaking In are the new kids on the block this weekend, both looking to take advantage of the Sunday holiday, and while Life of the Party is expected to take the runner-up position, once Sunday rolls around it could be a closer race than anticipated. At the top of the box office for a third weekend in a row will be Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, which we're expecting to drop right around 46% for a $62 million three-day, pushing the film's domestic cume right up against the $550 million mark come Sunday evening, moving into the all-time domestic top ten. Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last weekend Pacific Rim: Uprising took down the long-time box office king, Black Panther, with an impressive $28 million haul. It won’t likely repeat the feat this weekend as one of the more intriguing releases of the year arrives in the form of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Tyler Perry’s latest, Acrimony, also debuts with Taraji P. Henson in the lead role.
Ready Player One
What we are excited about: There’s two things to be very excited about with this movie—the source material and director Steven Spielberg. Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name is a fun, action-packed adventure filled with nostalgia and geek-filled glee. It pays homage to some of the best films of the 1980s, and who better to direct such a nostalgia-fueled adventure than the king of the blockbuster himself,...

Theo Rossi is revving things up.
The Sons of Anarchy star sat down with People Now to talk about his latest movie, Lowriders, which focuses on a family steeped in the car culture of East L.A. — while trying to outmaneuver some unsavory criminal elements.
Last year was a huge one for Rossi, who starred in the Netflix smash Luke Cage as well as the psychological thriller When the Bough Breaks. For 2017, Rossi was ready for a new challenge. In Lowriders, the 41-year-old plays Ghost, a young man recently released from prison after getting caught up in the lowrider car culture of his hometown.

Even though there are only a few days of 2016 left, that doesn’t mean we don’t have several more horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases to look forward to before the new year arrives. This Tuesday, Ti West’s In A Valley of Violence arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD, and Scream Factory is giving the cult classic The House That Screamed an HD overhaul.
Festival favorite Pet comes home on December 27th courtesy of Paramount, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has a new batch of Underworld Blu-rays coming our way, including the original film in 4K Ultra HD. Other notable releases this week include When the Bough Breaks, Dog Eat Dog, and Kill Command.
The House That Screamed (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
The chilling 1970 horror film by Narciso Ibáñez-Serrador (Who Could Kill A Child?) has been cited as an influence on Dario Argento's classic Suspiria.

Even though the holidays are upon us, that doesn’t mean the horror and sci-fi genres are slowing down, especially on the VOD side of things. For December, we have 21 different titles arriving on digital platforms, including two films I absolutely adored this year: The Eyes of My Mother (hits VOD on December 2nd) and Beyond the Gates (arrives on December 9th). Several other indie films will be coming home to VOD over the next few weeks, too, including Pet, Abattoir, The Possession Experiment, and Blood Brothers, and for those of you who may have missed it in theaters, Train to Busan hits VOD on December 13th, and it is not to be missed.
Other VOD releases for December include Solace, Morgan, Good Tidings, It Watches, The Disappointments Room, and the V/H/S-based SiREN.

The Magnificent Seven opened the final weekend of September with an estimated $35 million in domestic box office earnings…and while its $90 million costs may be tough to top (even with foreign box office adding to the totals), it was still enough to hold back the debut of Storks, which brought in an estimated $21.8 million against $70 million in costs. Both films pushed the previous champ Sully down into third place, where an estimated $13.8 million adds to a successful worldwide total of $126.9 million, with more weeks to come.
While Bridget Jones’s Baby has failed to make much of an impression with American audiences (earning an estimated $4.5 million), the comedy has been a smash success overseas, with the $35 million production earning $83.6 million in worldwide revenue. Snowden, in the meantime, must rely entirely on domestic gross so far, and an estimated $4.1 million has only brought in $15.1 million against a $40 million budget so far.

The grosses from two new $20-million-plus openers – “The Magnificent Seven” (Sony) and “Storks” (Warner Bros.) – delivering $35 million and just under $22 million respectively, might appear to be strong numbers. It’s the first time we’ve seen this level of gross since the second August weekend. And if the movies hold well and get strong international results, both could nudge into positive territory.
But a closer look is less upbeat, due to the total gross count as well as the disappointing showing of “Storks.” While remake “The Magnificent Seven” hit its marks, they are also less impressive on close examination.

Movie Stars still matter. As long as they're real movie stars and not just "leads". Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks both became famous in the 1980s and they continue to be two of the most reliable leading men thirty-ish years after their first hits. On the heels of the worst weekend of the year so far (based on cumulative gross for all titles) this weekend should perk things up a bit as MGM and Sony's The Magnificent Seven remake and WB's animated feature Storks are looking at strong openings. Projecting just how well this weekend's newcomers will perform, however, is something that's raising a few eyebrows in the wake of recent weeks and last week's box office bloodbath where not one, but two of the week's three new wide releases came in well below expectations, and all three failed to open over $10 million. Industry expectations for Magnificent Seven and Storks have both films opening around $30+ million. For Storks this number appears to be about right on target, but for Magnificent Seven it seems grossly conservative. Sony is projecting a $30-32 million weekend, but if it doesn't top $40 million it would be a bit of a surprise.

This Past Weekend:
Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

Sully not only held up well in its second week with a small drop in revenue (an estimated $22 million), but held onto first place with ease…the second-place finisher, Blair Witch, did not even break $10 million, with an estimated $9.7 million. Still, the latest horror entry in the long dormant franchise managed to nearly double its $5 million costs in a single weekend, even if it’s critical reviews are less than spectacular. Praise was much better for Bridget Jones’s Baby, another entry for a dormant franchise, though the wait may have been a little too long as its estimated $8.2 million is on par with the previous films domestically, but at a $35 million cost, it will most likely have to rely on overseas dollars to keep it in good standing.

It was a horrible weekend at the box-office. According to Deadline, at $89M, the weekend of 9/16-18 was the worst this year. Prior to that, the weekend of 2/5-7 was the lowest with $95M.
But, Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks made Warner Bros. happy with .Sully. dominating the competition with $22 million. So far, the biopic has made $70.5M at the box-office.
Lionsgate.s .Blair Witch. on the other hand, failed miserably. Projected to make between $15-$20M this weekend, the threequel managed to eke out a mere $9.7M at the box-office landing at Number 2. And with a horrible CinemaScore of D+, we can say the film is dead on arrival. What happened? I thought the movie, which was over-buzzed beginning with its secret Comic-Con screening and ending at the Toronto International Film Festival, was good enough, certainly better than the sequel .The Book of Shadows.. But alas, audiences seemed to not care.

What did you see at the movies this weekend? Or were you too busy bingewatching Emmy nominees before the ceremony tonight? Here's what was hottest at the box office. Other than Sully and the new Beatles Documentary Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years (which won the highest per screen average of the weekend on its 85 screens), "lukewarm" might be a better description for the new releases, none of which cracked 8 figures. Lionsgate's Blair Witch arrives seventeen years after the original film and it's hoping to become the third horror film to top the weekend box office this year. Standing in its way is last weekend's champ, Sully, which has delivered record results over the past few days and is looking at a $20+ million second weekend. Other new wide releases include Universal's Bridget Jones's Baby, arriving twelve years after the last film, and Open Road's Snowden. Meanwhile, Pure Flix debuts the documentary Hillsong: Let Hope Rise in over 800 theaters and Freestyle releases Mr. Church starring Eddie Murphy into approximately 300 theaters. Overall, while there could be a fight at the top with a couple of $20+ million weekends, this weekend's top twelve looks like it will be down from last year by about 10-11% with the top twelve generating around $89 million compared to $98.6 million over the same weekend last year. 2016 has already seen 11 films...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Chicago – Popular nursery rhymes are told to children as a way to calm them, but also as some kind of cautionary tale. Most of us could hear the melody and be able to sing the words along with it. This predictability is both its greatest strength and weakness, but the predictability that is the nursery cautionary tale in “When the Bough Breaks” is anything but a strength.

One of the worst things a film can be is “okay”. At least if a film is at either extreme of good or bad, it tends to be memorable. I can remember every Adam Sandler film as well as I can remember every Steven Spielberg. The biggest problem with “When the Bough Breaks” is how easily it clears your mind as soon as it’s over. The only thought you might leave the film with is, “Wow, they’re going to need a good lawyer.

In addition, Lionsgate’s animated family film The Wild Life barely scraped by, while Relativity’s The Disappointment’s Room failed…...
