At times it feels like fantasy, but it's good.

Will and Geordie look into a strange announcement made at a christening, Leonard receives an uncomfortable letter.

So before I begin, I'll have to start by saying, I thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a very watchable piece of TV, you have to appreciate that it's the 1950's, but seen through the eyes of someone in 2021. This highlights the case perfectly, society was bit the liberal sweet society painted here, attitudes towards adoption and being gay, I'm not sure they're well represented here, however...

It is a piece of TV, and for that, I did enjoy it, two particularly good stories running side by side, it makes a change for us to see a fanatical dad from the time. I had expected Leonard to receive a communication later in the series, I'm sure the story has a lot more legs.

Miles Jupp is always great value, Christina Cole was woefully underused. Have to say I adored the character of Tamara, she's going to be fun.

Overall, watchable make believe, 8/10.

There are two plot elements at work here. The first involves the adoption process for unwed mothers. The case is about a woman whose job is to place these children and to advise the mothers. She is a rather harsh one and one day is found dead. The second concerns Leonard and the guy who took the photograph of him and his lover at that resort. The guy has become a blackmailer.

Episode 6.2

A christening is interrupted when a dad rushes in claiming the baby is his.

The baby was adopted and the dad claims it was coerced as they are from a poor family.

The family that wants to adopt the baby are wealthy and claim the adoption was done properly.

It becomes a murder investigation when Joan Beaumont who runs the adoption agency is found murdered.

Geordie believes that the murderer has to be from either set of parents.

Meanwhile Leonard receives a blackmail demand.

I think the story was channelling Call the Midwife as it raised social issues of poor families having to give up babies.

Interestingly it was the men who had the stronger paternalistic instincts. Neither mother wanted the baby.

Although I did not think the murder element was that strong.

The story arc is going to be about Leonard and the repercussions of the blackmail story. Maybe Will should had got Geordie involved.

A well known television dramatist once wrote. Even though there was a time when homosexuality was illegal in Britain. People in a town or village sort of sensed that a certain middle aged spinster or confirmed bachelor were in fact gay. Everyone just got on with life, people's sexuality was just background noise.
