The damned Chase scene
ballandurtwitter28 May 2022
Good start for this series but the chase scene, oh my god what a mega-fail it made me wonder if the people involved are not under influence. It's really a shame for the whole Star Wars universe.

Pretty meh
chadjohnson-9232829 May 2022
Nothing really happened. And the chase scene with leia was pretty cringe. The "bad guys" don't seem too menacing at all. World was set up decently well and visually looked good.

I have some things to say...
Trey_Trebuchet28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so I think some of the criticism is somewhat justified. The short-loved chase scenes with little Leia are definitely not directed well, and the Third Sister may not have gotten a strong opening episode.

BUT

Everything, literally everything else, is really good. Ewen has picked up the character perfectly once again, and I think it's important to remember this is the first episode of a mini series. Could of have been a movie instead? Perhaps, but I've got a feeling this is going to be an excellent character study. Seeing "Ben" all beat up, lonely, and blaming himself for the fall of Anakin (who he still thinks is dead) was great and the build up to him eventually leaving Tatooine and possibly getting back in the fight was really well done.

Some of the criticism is fair, don't get me wrong, but I cannot say this is a mediocre start. I'm very excited for more of McGregor and more of the show.

That Star Wars feel but worrying bits
Alien_Al27 May 2022
The intro, score and world we're shown is near perfect, as is Ewen's Kenobi. I generally enjoyed the Alderaan scenes and our new Leia. I didn't enjoy the portrayal of the Inquisitors, individually or in general and especially Reva, which is concerning as it's half their show. And that forest chase wasn't just bad, it was painful enough you worry about everything after it.

I really enjoyed it, but I'm left more hoping than excited.

Would have been 9 if not for that forest chase
michielkromhout27 May 2022
Ewan is great. Everything looks great. Nice story setup and then...an infantile chase scene worthy of the finest Teletubbie episode. At least it was only 30 seconds or so.

I don't like Flea or that over the top Reva-character either but I sure hope they won't include anymore kindergarten stuff.

Episode 1.1
Prismark1028 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Obi-Wan Kenobi is the latest Star Wars series for Disney Plus.

The Mandalorian is a spaghetti western in space. Boba Fett was a tepid tale of redemption. Obi-Wan Kenobi looks to have gone for something darker.

Disney is boxed in with Obi-Wan Kenobi given the Star Wars trilogy and prequels. There is limited room for manoeuvre.

The episode opens with a recap of the prequels. If you are not a fan of those movies, then it is going to be a difficult watch. Especially as there are flashbacks to the prequels even during the episode.

The Inquisitor is hunting down the last of the Jedis. In Tatooine Obi-Wan is keeping watch at young Luke from a distance but comes out of hiding to save Leia.

The first episode was laborious with its world building and gruff moodiness. Some characters were cartoon like such as the shallow Reva who just wants to hunt down Obi-Wan.

Having Leia featuring a lot was a surprise. Maybe she is needed for Obi-Wan to leave Tatooine.

"The Jedi code is like an itch!"
bosporan27 May 2022
A great first episode, reintroducing the universe, the characters and setting up a challenge for Obi-Wan. All the beautiful Star Wars staples are there, powerful villains (though Reva is an overdrawn cartoon), cowed populations living on the edge of existence and corrupt overarching interstellar politics. All gloriously captured with realistic muck and grime, wide bleak vistas and shiny spires.

A fabulous establishing episode, let's see where it goes!

Glad to see Obi Wan back on screen, but didn't blow my socks off just yet. Interested to see where it goes! Also great to hear John Williams back on the score.

Extremely Mediocre Start
rangojalex27 May 2022
Disney's sole intent with these Disney+ shows (Star Wars and MCU) is to take all the soul from the movies and stuff it down the drain. Some of the acting in this episode is straight up awful, mainly because the writing and production is so "on-nose" that it's impossible to deliver in a way that doesn't sound cheesy. The plot is spoon fed so carefully that it made me forget that we have a national shortage of baby formula. The tone is bland and the Star Wars novelty just doesn't work like it used to. There's just no nuance here. Nothing memorable, just another piece of Disney content. This isn't art, this is a product.

Still, most people will probably like it, as this is yet another example of Disney only making shows for the broadest of audiences. It's not like episode this is awful, it's just boring and very telling for how the series is gonna play out.

It's Star Wars content so I'll watch the whole series, but it's just gonna be another lukewarm viewing experience. Not good not bad.

decent pilot, has potential
cwkenreich28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Obi-Wan Kenobi feels like another unnecessary Star Wars adventure created for the sole purpose of profit. However, it is far better than Boba Fett and sets up an intriguing plot that is clearly meant to be a filler story between episodes III and IV. What is nice is that we have a pretty well-paced, multifaceted story in favor of a comprehensive view of the galaxy. On the contrary, both Kenobi and Boba Fett share the same problem, rather than zeroing in on the one character each series is named after, Kenobi and Fett are mere representatives of a particular time period in Star Wars history (Fett being post-Mandalorian, and Kenobi post-Revenge of the Sith).

Kenobi is presented as the cliche retired, reluctant hero, (in the same way his pupil would be in The Last Jedi) living alone in the desert (much like Rey in The Force Awakens). However, it will be interesting to see McGregor slowly transform into the Alec Guiness version of the character. Rather than being dragged into a series of random adventures, the story continues to revolve around the Skywalkers, specifically Leia. This is the first time we've gotten a peak at Leia's childhood under the watch of Senator Bail Organa from the prequels. Her capture at the end definitely sets up a potential Mandalorian/Grogu relationship with Kenobi, which would explain why she would later refer to him as her "only hope".

I won't get my hopes up too high, but as a fan, I'm looking forward to some big character cameos and a suspenseful story much like the Mandalorian. Overall, the goal of this show is to further our appreciation for A New Hope and Revenge of the Sith.

Great set-up for what's to come
lovemichaeljordan27 May 2022
Not the greatest episode but a great set-up for what's to come. The pilot has great world-building, great action and decent acting. It is however great to see old faces again and I believe there are great scenes coming.

There is one unnecessary and unrealistic scene that should have been cut. There is no way that a kid could outrun three full-grown men. This scene is taken straight out of a kid's movie which might be the point, but most people will wish they cut that part. Even though it's a silly scene it keeps the story moving.

Promising start and great to see Obi Wan back on screen
snoozejonc27 May 2022
Obi-Wan reflects on the past and faces a new threat.

This is a solid start to the story.

After a familiar and intriguing opening sequence, it sets the scene well with Obi-Wan and other well known characters. It also depicts the Empire having a nazi-like control over the Galaxy. A lot of it is done through good visual storytelling along with a little bit of exposition dialogue.

Obi-Wan's arc is well established by giving him a fragile state of mind and something meaningful to do. However, certain scenes meant to generate tension can never fully work due to the fact we know the outcome of the overarching Star Wars narrative.

The fan service, as expected, is strong, with plenty of gaps filled from references made in the movies. It should appeal very much to those who enjoyed the movies and want to know more about surrounding events.

Visually the cinematography, backdrops and spectacle is as good as you would expect from the franchise. Aside from the chase sequence in the woods, which was lazily edited and directed.

Ewan McGregor slips effortlessly back into the role and leads it well. Rupert Friend makes a well spoken, evil, Gestapo-like Inquisitor. Jimmy Smits is also good in his supporting role.

For me it's a 7.5/10, but I round upwards.

It was good, but didn't blow me away!
and_mikkelsen27 May 2022
Best part of this episode was to see Ewan back as Kenobi! I guess my childhood brain got activated! Also great to have John back as the composer! Other than that it was an okay first episode, with some ups and downs! I dont like Reva and i fear the show will focus to much on her and the other inquisitors, sidelinning Kenobi in his own show... but i hope i am wrong! Casually optimistic from here.

Funniest chase scene ever
RogueBulb29 May 2022
It is hilarious how bad it is. Also the show itself is kinda bad and ruins a lot of background in the universe. Acting is okay cgi is pretty bellow average. Could be improved but it still has some pretty things baked into it and makes me think that they didn't think this plot through very much and how it places into the rest of the universe.

Part I
lassegalsgaard27 May 2022
It feels like only a few days ago that an Obi-Wan Kenobi project was announced with Stephen Daldry in charge of it. I was looking forward to that project, but when I heard that he was going to be heading his own Disney+ TV show, I felt like all of the stars had finally aligned. I have been patiently awaiting the arrival of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" for five years now, and to finally be able to sit down and watch it, feels like a fever dream. And I don't think it could have started in a better and more appropriate manner than this incredibly awesome reintroduction.

This is an adventure that I have been calling for since I heard Disney were going to make these anthology projects. There's a lot of stories that could be told with this character, and it seems like they're already on the right track. The way they managed to get Obi-Wan Kenobi back into the galaxy again made complete sense and it pulled in an asset that I didn't think they were going to use. Now, that also raises a lot of questions about how they're going to handle it, but I'm sure they know what they're doing. For most of the episode, the pacing was appropriately slow to give the audience time to settle back into the universe. For many fans, this is the first time they've ever heard of the Inquisitors as this is their live-action debut, and I think they chose the right focus point with Moses Ingram's Reva, who already places herself in the middle as a formidable and unhinged antagonist to the Jedi Master. But it is seeing Ewan McGregor back in the game that makes this a truly special moment. McGregor falls flawlessly back into the cape and brings this iconic character to the screen with ease and a lot of passion. As someone who is not a big fan of the prequels, McGregor was always the shining light. He gives life to the character once again and is guided by a great crew of people who all seem like they understand the importance of this character to the fans.

"Part I" does what it needs to do to ease fans back in and provides a compelling reason for Obi-Wan to get back into action. It sets up a great antagonist and a lot of questions regarding the larger connection, but the people behind this have gained my trust with a great reintroduction to this fabled galaxy far, far away.

A start to a series that can only go up
ha77y73ad9727 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first minute hit me right with the feels. I dont know how the team over at Lucasfilm are are able to tell the same story from so many points of view but i'm loving it. I cried during the same scene from the Book of Boba fett and i think we'll see more of this flash back before the end of the series to push the dark side.

The rest of this episode was exactly how i thought it would go, which isnt to say a bad thing at all! Kenobi protecting and then being drawn way for someone close but running into other Jedi on the sandy planes under the 2 suns. The reason for leaving the Twin Suns was a bit of a surprise but cannot wait until the next episode.

With the double drop im having to stop myself from running straight into the next episode but will certainly be watched after the first episode of Stranger Things!

Solid Start but not without its downfalls
israel-davis9427 May 2022
It's great to see Ewan step right back into the roll of Obi-Wan along with some other returning cast members but the episode has a few scenes where the script/acting performances do not match up to the level expected from the tone of the show thus far. Eager to see where it goes from here nevertheless.

Influenced , overwhelming hate . Dont listen to them. People will miss it when gone..

Warning: Spoilers
As being a fan , i liked it. Yes the same Revenge of the sith era fan i do . The aesthetic is well done , its showing the visual poetry of the Mandalorian . Its so good seeing Obi wan with a melancholic tune. Him acting true to the obi wan's actual nature is what giving me so much sadness within. (Rebel fans yall going to cry; remembering how maul taunted Obi wan by comparing him with a rat) great job with Leia as usual but lets not make this whole show cute . People who are saying episode was bad need to know " OBI WAN IS BROKEN IN THIS SHOW. ITS SUPPOSED TO BE SLOW , PAIN STRIKING! " As a revenge of the sith fan you must understand this .

Thank you Deborah. You have my trust . Star wars when rushed doesn't make any sense.(somehow palpatine return flashback) I love the variation of cuteness and loneliness in first episode i bet Vader is definitely going to add the spice & i can not wait for that.

People as usual judging this too much.

Spoilers ahead The opening action scene in the temple, Obi wan's subtlety, him seeing the actual universe , the people, the anguish in the eyes of a lost jedi ; Felt true . It hits where its supposed to. Really made me teary eyed seeing obi wan staring desperately , having bad dreams just like Anakin used to . Remembering Qui gon & then sitting desperately; The bitter loneliness with that tune is close to being perfect.

Thanks for twitching with the Grand inquisitors eyes. I stand corrected. They look okay now . Rupert is awesome. Improvement are always welcome but right now i am satisfied. Last scene chase was bad indeed , so was the hunchmen head , m not sorry.

Its star wars , band members aren't actors.

Safdie brother is a director thats why his role felt authentic. Not everyone could come in you know.

Bad acting ruined this episode
sorev-2788427 May 2022
I don't know if this is a poor written character or just straight up bad acting (the later is more likely in my opinion), but Third Sister/Reva character is ruining my experience here. I end up just skip the part where she talks, because holy s*** I just can't. Disclaimer, this has nothing to do with her gender or race, she just really bad in acting.

A fantastic return
jackdbradford27 May 2022
The long awaited return of Ewan Macgregor's titular character is here. And he's not messing around. The opening episode runs for about 48 minutes (excluding credits) and effectively revisits the past as a recap while also filling in the gap between this show and Revenge Of The Sith. The episode sets up and interesting premise that is looking to last a few episodes or more. The characters feel the same as they did in 2005 while also including subtle nods to what comes later in the timeline. A very intriguing first episode that excites me to see the rest.

Painfully Mediocre
Kenneth_Brant27 May 2022

Hopefully the ones coming are better. Inquisitors are underwhelming (especially Reva) Felt the pacing was a little off and could care less for the Leia scenes. I understand it was establishing a plot point, but I feel it could have been better executed.

Warning: Spoilers
People giving 1 star are the classic spoilt mass consumer winers.

Ewan is excellent. The worlds are cinema level. The story line makes sense. I I won is absolutely the centre character, not 3rd sister. Original organa actor is awsome. Leias casting is great, if a tad annoying but considering her heritage it's understandable she is the way she is.

Every Story Has A Beginning

It's probably just me but I don't really like Reva, Leia
nuryusman28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This Reva character is poorly casted, I don't know who the actress is but she comes across as trying too hard. And I will have to also add that even if little Leia looks as cute as a button, she becomes immediately annoying everytime she speaks. And something about the way she run reminds me of my little kids when they are still in diapers.

Which begs the question, how difficult is it for a Jedi to catch up with a kid in diapers?

Pretty good overall
nebula002427 May 2022
Production quality is high, and the scope of the series seems broad enough so far. Personally I'm looking forward to finishing the series.

One thing that struck me as odd (besides the chase scene) was why Leia's adopted parents wanted her to apologize to her cousin. Watching this was quite infuriating, as it was clear she handled the situation quite well. It was also a bit unclear whether Bail Organa overheard Leia in the reception hall, because he smiles after she outsmarts him with words. Yet, later he seems surprised when Leia repeats her cousin's words about not being a real Organa. In any case, I was quite surprised the way these scenes were written. If her parents want her to become a senator so bad, they should have been quite proud that Leia handled the bullying with her intelligence and words. She didn't shirk away, cry or lash out with violence. She stood boldly and used her words to gain the upper hand. Very strange.
