Imagination runs riot
Gyran8 October 2009
This piece of fluff by Puccini is his least successful opera but is hugely enjoyable as a star vehicle for Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna. It is a sort of Traviata-lite. Magda, a glamorous courtesan, remembers a blissful encounter with a student when she was young and innocent. Later she goes to a bar and meets Ruggero, an impoverished young man. They escape to Nice together but Magda knows that it cannot last because of her dubious past. La rondine, the swallow, returns to her rich protector.

The opera is filled with characteristically Puccinian music, although the only well-known number is the famous Sogno di Dorabella. Angela Gheorghiu performs this beautifully right at the start of the opera. She wears a tight-fitting, bejewelled red dress, which may have been diaphanous or that may just have been my fervid imagination. Roberto Alagna is a good match for her as Ruggero. He seems recently to have developed a new, darker tone to his lyrical tenor voice.

There are two soprano-tenor pairings in the opera, the other being Lizette, Magda's maid and Prunier, a poet. The most important thing for this pair to remember is not to upstage the star couple. This can be difficult. Lisette is a cheeky little maid, rather like Adele in Die Fledermaus. The last time I saw La Rondine, the Lisette was so good I left thinking she should have swapped roles with the soprano singing Magda. Lisette Oropesa, here, pitches her performance diplomatically just one notch below Angela Gheorghiu. There is no danger that Marius Brenciu's Prunier will upstage Roberto Alagna. Also on uncharacteristically croaky form is Samuel Ramey as the sugar daddy Rambaldo.

I saw an interview with Angela Gheorghiu recently in which she explained that she dislikes playing intimate scenes with her husband Roberto Alagna because it is tantamount to inviting the audience into their bedroom. Well there are no bedroom scenes in this production but it provides a perfect vehicle for this star couple, which is perhaps why they have done so much to rescue this opera's reputation in recent years. The production is visually stunning with an art deco set which advances the opera's period from mid-19th century to early 20th. If all else fails, the Met audience like to clap the sets. Well there was plenty to applaud in this spectacular production.

The cast are great, the production is absolutely lovely

This La Rondine was one of two of the Met broadcasts I re-watched, having loved them so much on first viewing. The other was Thais. My opinion of this production still hasn't changed, it is a lovely production, with sumptuous sets and costuming, with a great cast. Beforehand I had seen one production previous to the Met broadcast, and that was the 1998 performance with Ainhoa Arteta.

Overall, I very much loved it and Arteta was touching, but it was a pity about the use of the alternate ending, it is tacky and nowhere near as effective as the ending I'm used to. Fortunately, the Met production doesn't use this ending, and all the better for it. Musically and visually the ending here is a triumph.

La Rondine, as far as Puccini operas go, is not quite one of my favourite Puccini operas, I admit I am attached more to Tosca and La Boheme. However it is a beautiful light opera and alongside La Fancuilla Del West Puccini's most underrated, with moments of humour and is very touching as well. The score is one of Puccini's most beautiful. The orchestra I have say bring out the lyricalism and poignancy of Puccini's score beautifully and I loved the nuances of the conducting as well.

Angela Gheorghiu gets better and better every time I see her. Her Magda is very moving, with some world-weariness and cynicism as well, and I love the dark, husky tone of her singing. I do think she sings Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta with beauty and care, I just wish the audience reception wasn't so tepid. Her real-life husband Roberto Alagna is also very good in one of his better performances, he is handsome, his singing if occasionally on the sharp side intonation-wise charms and his acting is dashing and not too stolid, in fact it is often heartfelt.

There is a very solid support cast also. Faring best is Marius Brencu as Punier, it is a very funny and charming performance. Just as delightful as Lisette Oropesa as Magda's maid Lisette. However, there is one performance that doesn't hold up as well as the others on second viewing and that is Samuel Ramey in the small role of Rambaldo. Ramey is a very distinguished basso, in his prime his voice was rich and commanding and his acting I think is good, better in my opinion than some people give it credit for. However, his normally dark and sumptuous voice is now wobbly and croaky. His acting is acceptable though I give you that, and while disappointing his role is small so it didn't hamper the production too much.

Overall, I loved this production, apart from Ramey it is every bit as good, perhaps even better than my first viewing back in July. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

Beauitful production of La Rondine
AngelofMusic199810 March 2023
La Rondine is a new opera for me. It is not among my favorites. From Puccini,I prefer La Boheme and Tosca to it and also have a soft spot for Madama Butterfly and Turandot. Angela Gheorghiu is a soprano I know as Violetta,Micaela and Mimi(her signature role). Here,as Magda, she looks beautiful, sings gorgeously and has great chemistry with Roberto Alagna(they were married at the time). Roberto Alagna as Ruggero gives an underrated performance of his. He looks gorgeous, sings beautifully and the final scene really hits you. Sets and costume look beautiful and evoke Magda's society .The rest of the cast also does an amazing job. Overall,AMAZING La Rondine and one of the best Met Live in HD broadcasts., 9,5/10.

Fine performance in a secondary role

Little to add to the reviews already posted except that for me, the performance by tenor Marius Brenciu in the role of the poet rises well above the rest of the cast, famous as some of them are or became later. He is an excellent actor with an expressive face, wears the period costumes well, and sings the opera's best number in the first act before the melody is handed on to the soprano.
