Expectations were not high for either segment of this double bill. None of the previous 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' episodes have been good, the least bad being Episode 12 and even that was still very average. None of the episodes after this double bill were much better in quality either. Really have tried to give 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' a chance, after being so wowed by 'Friendship is Magic', but it continually disappointed for similar reasons to each other.
All the usual flaws of the previous episodes are here in both segments. Most of them did them worse than this double bill, but almost everything except one aspect is handled really badly. Neither segment had concepts that were that interesting, and both concepts are handled in an even more uninteresting and unappealing manner. None of the characters focused on are written well, having seen what the franchise is capable of with 'Friendship is Magic' the characterisation was very disappointing throughout the show's run and here is no exception.
There is one aspect that is done right, which is the voice acting. All voicing with enthusiasm and nuance, remarkable seeing as there isn't any of those in the writing or storytelling.
Everything ranges between mediocre at best to absolutely awful. There is nothing imaginative or vibrant about the animation, which is rushed and careless looking throughout. Indicative of rushed deadlines and low budget. The music is like cheesy high school quality and never fits with what goes on. The theme tune is grating. Both segments are painfully unimaginative and bland as well as paper thin, derivative and draggy, especially the very over-simplistic "One Click Wonder".
The humour too often is forced, more juvenile than sophisticated and is only marginally amusing at best on occasions. Applejack comes over as bland and her stubbornness is overkill, while the way she's treated is mean spirited. The moral is over simple and muddled in both segments. "One Click Wonder" is pretty much a disaster, with too much of an over-reliance on memes and technology. None of it inventive or clever, actually found it all very tired, gimmicky and repetitive, with the humour being even more contrived, and while the subject (not an appealing one in the first place) is relevant the content already has an out of date feel. Story-wise, there is not much of one and what little there is is dull and over stretched feeling in an episode that could have been half as long tops and would have struggled to even have enough content then.
None of the characters engage and once again, after 'Friendship is Magic' did so well breaking away from the "only for primary school period girls" stereotypes wrongly associated with the franchise for so long, the characters come over as dumbed down stereotypes with that target audience stereotype being reinforced.
