Review of both parts:
This marks the last adventure for Maria as her father Alan gets a job offer in America. The young actress who plays Maria, Yasmin Paige, and the actor who plays the father, Joseph Millson both did a great job throughout their time and thank goodness RTD and the team managed to create a new family who replace them and are equally good in terms of writing and acting.
The storyline involves a Sontaran whose entire fleet was destroyed leaving him as a lone warrior on Earth intent to restore his honour. It is a decent storyline and is handled in an entertaining way.
The solid dialogue, acting and plot make this a lot of fun and the Sontaran himself is done so well that it actually strengthens the Sontarans as a threatening, impressive race. Far from the way they would be handled as an amusing comedic sideshow in Steven Moffatt's era of Doctor Who. There is humour of course but this Sontaran is also menacing and convincing as a force to be reckoned with. The only downside was when he was unable to get through closed metal doors when I would have thought his weaponry could have been used.
There is a sad farewell to Maria and Alan but the series continues as strong as ever.
My ratings: Parts 1 & 2 - 8/10.
