Interesting plot but doesn't go very far

Both stories here have some actual conflict and decent plot resolutions that elevate them above the norm for the show, while having humor that works alongside. The problem is that since the two are completely unrelated, there just isn't time to really have much happen.

Lights, camera, mayhem

Both "Game Knight" and "Director Spike's Mockumentary" had far better concepts than most episodes of 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' and had potential. Neither are innovative, but the playing games or creating imaginary characters with friends when bored concept has worked very well more than once in animation (i.e. 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh's' "A Knight to Remember"). As has episodes with a mockumentary structure, a strong example being 'Scooby Doo and Guess Who's' "The Last Inmate".

The good news is that both "Game Knight" and "Director Spike's Mockumentary" are among the best, or more like among the least problematic, episodes of 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' and there are improvements in the writing and character writing compared to usual. Neither are particularly great either, with the stories not being strong enough and the quality of both are inconsistent and don't quite live up to full potential. Inconsistent is at least a good deal better than mediocre or downright weak like a vast majority of the previous episodes though.

In both episodes there are good things. The best aspect is the voice acting which is very good near all round (particularly Twilight), full of energy and nuanced, with one exception. The character writing is some of the best of the show up to this date and overall, with flaws not being overdone overall (from the synopsis Twilight sounds pushy but actually she was not anywhere near as much as it sounded) and not being too much of one dimension. The characters are not complex, but they are not as simplistic as they tend to be on the show or too much like reinforced stereotypes.

Furthermore, there is more humour than usual and it is not of the excessively childish kind usually seen on 'Pony Life'. Did find some of it quite amusing, especially in "Game Knight". The character interaction is pretty strong, "Game Knight" starts off very promisingly and the mockumentary structure of "Director Spike's Mockumentary" is interesting and very different for the show.

Did feel though that both episodes could have been better. Both stories are on the whole too thin, especially "Director Spike's Mockumentary", and both run out of ideas too early. Which is not near as eventful as it sounds and it felt a bit repetitive at times. While the morals are very well intended and are not laid on too thick, they are also very rehashed and have been done before and better on the infinitely superior 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'.

While the writing has a little more spark than the usual 'Pony Life' episode, it is still too bland and too simple. Spike is more tolerable than he was in the previous episode, but he doesn't have an awful lot of personality and could have been more considerate of his friends. Am not a fan of Tabitha St Germain's voice work for him, it doesn't fit and sounds like someone mature trying too hard to sound younger and more boyish.

In conclusion, much better than most 'Pony Life' episodes but a missed opportunity. 5/10.
