Season Two Review
southdavid9 September 2021
I watched "War of the Worlds" because I do have an affinity for the work of creator Howard Overman. Because of its grim nature, I would have said that I admired it, rather than enjoyed it and this second season is more of the same - though I do feel like it takes a step in the right direction by becoming more plot focussed.

With the discovery that the aliens who attacked Earth look just like humans, the war between the invaders and survivors continues. Chloe (Stephane Caillard), Jonathan (Stephen Campbell Moore) and Sacha (Matheiu Torloting) make it to London and set about finding out if his family have survived. An attack on the observatory in the Alps leads to an interaction with a dying alien for Catherine (Lea Drucker) who gives her a book of equations and tells her that she must get it to Bill Ward (Gabriel Byrne). Alongside her sister, they too make the dangerous trip across France to try and cross the channel.

So, what can I say. Do I honestly enjoy the show? It's a technical marvel, regularly shooting in a convincingly abandoned London. The visual effects are good. The performances are generally pretty solid and as I said in the first paragraph, I do think that the story of this second season, focussing on Bill's attempts to create a virus that will target the aliens is an improvement over the first. I also liked how it ended, I'll keep this spoiler free, but it really seems like this should be the end of the show altogether, rather than running to the already confirmed third one. There are some story strands that can be pulled on, I guess - but it feels like the perfect end to the narrative.

Do I enjoy the show though? Not really. It's very grim stuff a lot of the time, characters are regularly killed and anything we see of life for other survivors is very downbeat. Not everything has to be sunshine and roses, but so much of Overman's early work was shot through with a sense of humour, it's strange that it's so absent here.

Will, I watch the 3rd season. Probably, I'm invested now - but I hope they don't throw away this perfect conclusion, for something less satisfying.

Applause for Professor Bill Ward
anabuckley-716281 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the best episodes of the show in my opinion. Finally professor Bill Ward saved the world from the alien invasion that would happen. But is it really over?

Waiting for the season 3.

Are you kidding me?!?

Warning: Spoilers
Isla "I want a new life." Adinea "You'll have it, I promise, once we kill Bill Ward." Seriously? That ship has already sailed. When the leader of the invaders sent the "Adam and Eve" of the invaders into space the die was cast. The genetic failures were already in motion and nothing she could do after that could change things. What she needs to do is go back further and reboot the whole system instead of repeating the error. The whole idea leaves a great deal to desire. Not a good ending to the season. But it leaves a lot of "hope" for the next season. Which is probably what the producers are hoping for. We'll just have to wait for the next season....

A bit cliche ending....but well done. Warning: Spoilers
Watching season 1 created a premise of yet another alien invasion storyline with silly DARPA looking robots killing off humanity. Then season 2 twisted the story 180 degrees. I must say this show did have some creative writing behind it. Too bad there are no crumbs left to logically take this show to season 3.

The only plot hole hard to grasp is the whole Adam and Eve principle and how the hell the lineage from the same blood pool would have lived on for thousands of years. Then there is the concept of Mica not attempting to change the past himself when he had the ability by essentially invoke the whole Grandfather's paradox.

Not what I was expecting but great nonetheless

Warning: Spoilers
Not understanding all the hate for this show, I really enjoyed it.

In one move the 'aliens' pretty much wipe out all of humanity. The survivors are then picked off by strangely familiar DARPA looking robots (gives a whole new meaning to humane device). No one is spared including children, and as a parent this made the show quite chilling. The sound of mechanical footsteps sent a chill down your spine.

What made this for me it was its pace, atmosphere, sheer feeling of hopelessness for humanity and its underdependence on CGI to carry it. The cast were brilliant in their roles (apart from 1-2). The finale leaves you wondering how they'll do a season 3 but really looking forward to it.

Decent S2 finale, lots of S3 hints...

Warning: Spoilers
Thought the "futures" were gonna stop Bill and was faily shocked when they didn't, didn't see that coming!

There were lots of nods to where they may go in S3, it seems like they've just hit the reset button on this. New timeline, Back to the Future of the War of the Worlds!

Others are getting the future echoe's now, then there's the book from the future with the workings.

Final episode better than most previously.

This has been incredibly frustrating. This episode made more sense, couple with the one before. Still some confusion at the end and I suppose there could be another season? I'll certainly watch if there is.

Lazy writing to wrap things up
khryztophfer-502-2805955 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Finished The War of the Worlds. Well, that was interesting. I liked how they made it turn out that it was us from the future....

Except there's one problem that bugs me; the paradox created by the idea that Emily and Sacha were the original Adam and Eve who created the race of future humans who come back to attack us.

They said everything had been leading up to them getting on that ship and spawning generations of humans with the rare genetic disorder (his muscular dystrophy and whatever she had). Then their descendants eventually travelled back in time to attack us and to stop Bill Ward and his virus, because of Sacha's twisted views and hatred for what Bill did to Emily. And a time loop was created that repeated over and over. Okay, sure.

But how could they have gotten on that ship the very first time? It wouldn't have existed, because they hadn't ever gotten on it before that point, and hadn't ever travelled to another world where their descendants would eventually travel back in time to create the whole attack scenario that led to them getting on the ship in the first place! And who developed the technology and the ships? Apparently they already existed, otherwise Emily and Sacha could never have boarded one to spawn the future humans in the first place? But wasn't it the future humans who developed the technology for the ships and time travel eons into the future?

And then when they all went back further into the past and Bill pushed Emily off the roof and killed her, thus preventing everything from happening, why didn't all the others from the future disappear? Technically, they would no longer exist once the time loop was broken. Yet they were still there?

It doesn't make sense! I feel like the writers just got lazy and tried to wrap everything up to end the series with some semblance of closure.

I hate when they do stuff like that and it doesn't make any sense. It started off pretty strong, and overall it was very interesting and fun to watch, but the ending really sucked.
