Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.
Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree,...

We heard from the fine folks behind the WWII vampire project The Bleeding (not to be confused with Charlie Picerni’s direct-to-video action horror film that starred Michael Matthias, Vinnie Jones, Dmx, and Michael Madsen) a little while ago with an update and some fresh promo art for you. Get the skinny and the eye candy below!
German director Josef Rusnak (The Thirteenth Floor, It's Alive, The Contractor) is now attached to direct. Jeremy Wall (Jaz Films) optioned the script and is producing along with Corina Danckwerts. They produced the supernatural thriller The Objective, written and directed by Daniel Myrick (The Blair Witch Project). The Bleeding is based on a short story by Bram Stoker Award-nominated William R. Trotter entitled "The Bleeding of Hauptmann Gehlen". The script was penned by John and Paul Buckholts, who are also executive producing.

I just finished watching The Bleeding and I'm just going to dive in here. I won't bother developing a clever thesis statement or a hook to hang the review on. The Bleeding is a bad movie. I mean, bad — B. A. D.
You look at the posters for The Bleeding and you see names like Vinnie Jones, Armand Assante and Michael Madsen, and you think, "Huh, those are some pretty big names." Let me hip you to a little insider movie secret: They aren't really big names. They’re "big enough" names, as in big enough to get a bad movie sold to a distributor, but not big enough open a "real" movie. Red flag.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Adjustment Bureau – Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Lisa Thoreson
Beastly – Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen
Rango – (voices of) Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant
Take Me Home Tonight – Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler
Movie of the Week
Rango
The Stars: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant
The Plot: A chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero (Depp) finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it.
The Buzz: Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribean Trilogy, The Ring) takes a swash at his first animated feature. I thought the trailer for this film was excellent — Rango looks to be visually stunning, narratively engaging, and comically amusing. Verbinski’s adventure-film stripes are well earned — he knows his way around the genre — and this looks to be a strong addition to his filmography.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Circo Trailer Here in the southwest I think you can take a band like Calexico for granted. They have a dusty, desert charm that draws...

This is either the worst or the most entertaining trailer I've ever seen. Or somewhere in between. I do know that it's never going to see the inside of a movie theater. But The power of Vinnie Jones in a wig compelled me to watch it, and there's a strange, black tar heroin-like allure to it. It's so awful, so horrible, and yet... I just couldn't stop.
This is the trailer for The Bleeding, which sounds like the title of a Cannibal Corpse album. Oh, wait. It is the title of a Cannibal Corpse album. Appropriate, I suppose. Here's the gloriously brief, painful synopsis:
An ex-Army Ranger searching for the killer of his parents discovers a family of vampires in a former chemical weapons factory-turned-nightclub.
Right. Here's the thing: if Hollywood was ever consumed in an holy cleansing fire, and the earth was salted and made barren, and then arsenic...

Having seen The Bleeding , I can tell you that it's a...special...movie. You'll have to wait for Shock's review to know what I mean by that, however, a new clip is here that serves as a decent hint for what I mean. The fine folks over at Anchor Bay Entertainment have given us the first look at an exclusive clip from director Charlie Picerni’s horror-actioner “The Bleeding”, featuring Michael Madsen as a vampire-slaying priest showing the weapons of the trade to the film’s hero Shawn Black, played by Michael Matthias. I gotta admit, this first clip for Charlie Picerni’s long-delayed vampire movie “The Bleeding” is a hell of a lot better than what I saw in the film’s debut trailer. That trailer was just … wow, it was pretty bad. This clip, though? It looks pretty damn good. Very nifty gunplay and well-shot. Who would have thunk it? Now if the rest of the movie is like this, we may have a winner. Or at the very least, something much more watchable than I thought after seeing the trailer… Shawn Black (Matthias) knows pain. Why do people keeping making movies like this?
Anchor Bay Entertainment will be releasing what they call a "vampire adventure" movie - The Bleeding - on DVD March 1st 2011, and they actually expect people to buy this pile because tattoo-bitch Kat Von D is in it as a slutty vampiress (I guess, if she wants to get into acting, she can only really play two roles: 'Girl Getting/Giving tattoos' or 'Slutty Vampiress').
It's a "vampire adventure", people! It's set in some retarded future where - get this - "A horde of vampires comes up from hell under some dude named Cain and attempts to destroy mankind".
Why would vampires want to destroy mankind? They fucking drink human blood. No humans, no blood. Starvation. It's akin to sheep coming up with a story about how humans want to kill all sheep, immediately. Muahahahahaha.
And why, oh why, do we need...

We were the first site to leak the trailer for The Bleeding way back in October 2009. Not surprisingly we were promptly asked to take it down until the film could be completed and a new trailer cut. Well, it's taken a long time, but The Bleeding is back with a new trailer and a release date courtesy of Anchor Bay Ent.
Synopsis:

Beaten, bloodied and left for dead by a gang of ruthless vampires led by the charismatic Cain and his lethal lieutenant Vanya (Kat Von D). But like his would-be murderers, Shawn has come back from the brink of death to take his revenge. He soon comes upon Reverend Roy (Madsen), who reveals to Shawn his calling as a "slayer," the only human capable of truly destroying vampires.

This isn’t your sappy pre-teen vampire flick, although these vampires are hot, I highly doubt any of them will be covered in glitter. These badass vampires are of the kick ass, gun toting, tattooed variety. which just happens to be my favorite. The Anchor Bay film boasts an all star cast: Vinnie Jones (X-Men: The Last Stand, Snatch), Michael Matthias, rapper Dmx (Romeo Must Die), Rachelle Leah, Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2), the super sexy Kat Von D ("L.A. Anchor Bay Entertainment has finally released a trailer for the long-delayed vampire movie “The Bleeding”. Unfortunately, the wait hasn’t exactly been worth it. That is, if you were waiting for it. This … does not look like a very good movie. Michael Madsen looks like the best thing about it, plus I think Armand Assante shows up at some point to do something, though I’m not really sure what. Rapper Dmx and tattoo chick Katherine von Drachenberg aka Kat Von D co-stars alongside leads Rachelle Leah and Michael Matthias. Vinnie Jones plays a pimp vampire. Or something.
