Some Texas Justice
bkoganbing15 February 2020
Lyle Lovatt plays a Texas Ranger up in New York to take a witness back. But shades of Coogan's Bluff he gets taken away from among others Donnie Wahlberg and Marisa Ramrez. They're not a good fit at first, but Wahlberg and Lovatt do kind of grow on each other.

Bridget Moynahan draws a case where a mild mannered citizen guns down two punks and is proclaimed a hero. Shades of Bernhard Goetz, but there are flaws in his account of things.

And Will Estes gets beat himself up over a drug operation sting that went horribly wrong and a cop is killed by friendly fire from another cop. That causes lots of tension at Estes's precinct and with the death of a cop Tom Selleck is involved also.

The Estes segment is the strongest though there is one classic shootout with Wahlberg, Lovatt and a drug gang. In fact two of them.

Warning: Spoilers
.....of this episode in which that lovable police detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Walhberg) finds himself partnering with Texas Ranger Major Waylon Jennings.....uh, I mean Waylon Gates (Lyle Lovett) in chasing and apprehending Travis Wiley (Jon Collin Barclay) who's known as the Lone Star Killer. Wiley had been under heavy escort by the United States Marshal's Service until the convoy had been ambushed by Wiley's colleagues and there's a humongous shootout that leaves most of the deputies dead. Wiley's in the wind, Reagan and his partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) are not happy partners, neither is Ranger Gates, and so there's a partnership of Texas Ranger and NYPD (shades of COOGAN'S BLUFF and McCLOUD). Native New Yorker Oliver Landry (Joe Tuttle) claims that he had to shoot and kill two young blacks Landry claims were going to mug him, but assistant district attorney Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) and her favorite investigator Anthony Abetemarco (Steven Schirripa) deduce that there's something fishy about Landry's story. And at the weekly dinner, Eddie Janko Reagan (Vanessa Ray) serves up some plant-based burgers that go over like a lead zeppelin...except for Henry "Pop" Reagan (Len Cariou) who takes a bite and declares it absolutely yummy. As for NYPD Sergeant Jamie Reagan (Will Estes), he's deep in the slimy soup when Eddie's partner Officer James Addison (Justin Cunningham) accidentally shoots and kills undercover cop Jason Price (Drew Gehling), and so the Internal Affairs shoo-flies are all over Sergeant Reagan like stink on a skunk. The IAB believes that Sergeant Reagan did not exercise complete supervisory control over his officers, and this one IAB lieutenant (Ann Harada) would like Sergeant Reagan's hiney on a wall in her office. Waylon Gates has a personal reason in taking the Zaragoza drug ring; they whacked his partner three years ago. Jamie Reagan is cleared by the IAB, as relayed by Lieutenant Sid Gormley (Robert Clohessy) who tells Jamie to lay off his investigation. Danny and Waylon find Travis Wiley at a cheap motel and fend off the Zaragoza Gang who try to spring Wiley loose, and it develops that Gates is a former Marine, just like Danny. The episode ends with Jamie, Danny, Pop, and Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) attending the funeral of Officer Jason Price. A real heartbreaker of an ending. And one of the best episodes ever.

This is one of the top 3 shows of the entire series in my opinion. It has a little bit of everything, with less of the members of the family that need to be shown much less of.

Near-Perfect episode.
