Curb Your Enthusiasm returns to Max this month in what’s being called the show’s final season (for now). If you’re not ready for the Larry David-centric comedy series to end, you can binge all eleven of the show’s previous seasons on Max right now before hitting the new episodes.
Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

Tyler Perry has signed a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix. The prolific filmmaker behind “Boo!: A Madea Halloween,” “For Colored Girls,” “The Family That Preys” and “Why Did I Get Married?” will write, direct and produce feature films for the streaming giant.
Perry’s upcoming Netflix originals include “Six Triple Eight,” with Kerry Washington heading up an ensemble flick about the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to be stationed overseas during World War II. Perry’s upcoming “Mea Culpa” stars Kelly Rowland as a defense attorney who represents an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend.
Perry has already made several films for Netflix, including “A Jazzman’s Blues,” “A Fall from Grace” and “A Madea Homecoming.”
The latter was the 12th film featuring Perry’s marquee character. The fast-talking, zero-s–t-taking atheist grandmother — played by Perry himself — was first introduced onstage in “I Can Do Bad All By Myself...

“Abbott Elementary” will finally reveal Janine’s mother on the ABC comedy’s April 12 episode, and even though it’s April Fool’s Day, we’re not (Cookie) Lyon: It’s “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson, who will play Vanetta on the hit comedy series.
The casting of Henson was revealed Saturday at the Paley Center for Media’s annual PaleyFest LA event, where an “Abbott Elementary” panel featured stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Wiliams and William Stanford Davis in person, as well as Janelle James and Chris Perfetti via Zoom from New York. Pre-taping a message was star and executive producer Quinta Brunson, who wasn’t able to attend — as she’s hosting tonight’s installment of “Saturday Night Live.”

The holiday season is almost here and Amazon Prime is getting in the mood with its list of December 2021 releases. Sure there are the usual Christmas movies to be found but the real gift this month are two big original titles.
The sixth and final season of beloved sci-fi series The Expanse premieres on Dec. 10. Amazon is doing its usual release strategy of three episodes on the premiere day followed by a weekly schedule so there’s still some time to be spent with the crew of the Rocinante. The other big ticket item is the Desi and Lucy biopic Being the Ricardos on Dec. 21. Sure, Aaron Sorkin seems to be completely disinterested in I Love Lucy and Nicole Kidman bears no passing resemblance to the iconic comedienne whatsoever but uh…it’s a movie!

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.
But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Taraji P. Henson had been steadily acting for over a decade, with nearly three dozen projects under her belt, before she reached a critical turning point in her career: what she thought was a fair paycheck.

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last weekend Pacific Rim: Uprising took down the long-time box office king, Black Panther, with an impressive $28 million haul. It won’t likely repeat the feat this weekend as one of the more intriguing releases of the year arrives in the form of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Tyler Perry’s latest, Acrimony, also debuts with Taraji P. Henson in the lead role.

Lionsgate is readying to release Tyler Perry's next films.
Tyler Perry's She's Living My Life, starring Taraji P. Henson, will hit theaters March 30. It will open on Easter weekend, opposite the Warner Bros. sci-fi adaptation of Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg, and Pure Flix's faith-based follow-up God's Not Dead 3.
The drama sees Henson playing a faithful wife who, after growing tired of standing by her devious husband, gets enraged when it becomes clear she has been betrayed. The project reunites Henson and Perry after two previous collaborations: 2008's The Family That Preys and 2009's I Can Do Bad All by Myself.

The Tiff folks have unveiled their slated dozen features for their spanking brand new competitive section and they’ve managed to lasso some high profile world preems that will compete alongside Int. and Na premieres. Claire Denis, Agnieszka Holland and Jia Zhang-ke for which the name of the programme section is named after (Tiff referenced his 2000 film), will see a class comprised of the likes Joachim Lafosse and his piping hot The White Knights, David Verbeek (Full Contact starring Grégoire Colin – see pic above), Fabienne Berthaud and yet again actress Diane Kruger with Sky and Ben Wheatley‘s highly anticipated High Rise. Also included in the comp we find Pablo Trapero‘s Venice-bound The Clan, Eva Husson‘s hotly tipped directorial debut Bang Gang (A Modern Love Story) and a docu entry that sounds absolutely brutal true story from Alan Zweig in Hurt. The great thing about having The Walking Dead cast members stop by when you're not pressing them for spoilers is they're happy to tell you anything else you'd like to know. Case in point: Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese), who took our Pop Culture Personality Test and named the movie that scared him even though it wasn't supposed to (Shrek), the movie he wishes he could watch again for the first time (A Soldier's Story), and the movie he almost walked out of (Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys). And, really proving our point, he also serenaded us with some Rihanna.

I kid, I kid, but I’m also kind of serious. When someone mentions Tyler Perry, it’s only fair to think of him dressing up in old lady drag, bible thumping, and moralizing about how women shouldn’t open their legs for any good looking dude like they are a 24-hour Golden Corral. (Seriously, did you see Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor? Way to send a message to women that if they are not faithful, they’re going to get AIDS and everyone will hate them. Ugh!)
But here’s the thing: Ty Ty isn’t the owner of these kinds of movie tropes, so it’s about time we stop acting like it and recognize other movies that rely on these storytelling motifs. For example:

'No Good Deed' movie going unpunished to top weekend box office? (photo: Idris Elba in 'No Good Deed') Apologies for the bad wordplay above, but if Friday estimates are a reliable indicator, No Good Deed should indeed go unpunished to the top of the domestic box office this weekend, September 12-14, 2014. But why "unpunished"? Well, so far the Sam Miller-directed thriller starring four-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba (Luther) and Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has a downright putrid 10% score and 2.6/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics. Sony Pictures, whose subsidiary ScreenGems is distributing No Good Deed, reportedly opted to skip late Thursday screenings to ensure that the film's plot twist would be kept under wraps. More likely, however, it was the critics' derisive remarks that Sony wanted under wraps. For instance: "The final plot twist...

For evidence of how bad working actresses have it in contemporary Hollywood, look no further than the cavalcade of talented female performers who have subjected themselves to toiling in the flat-footed melodramas of Tyler Perry; if Alfre Woodard, Kathy Bates and Sanaa Lathan (“The Family That Preys”), Thandie Newton and Gabrielle Union (“Good Deeds”) and Taraji P. Henson (“I Can Do Bad All By Myself”) aren't getting better offers than to star in Perry's hacky, retrograde, low-budget movies, times are tough indeed. The most misused performer in his latest, “The Single Moms Club,” would have to be the talented comic.

Ahead of the release of The Single Moms Club, a film written, directed, produced by and starring Tyler Perry, we thought it was worthwhile looking back on all the Tyler Perry Productions (Tpp) that came before it. In total, Perry has produced 16 films (including Smc) from the ongoing Madea franchise to stand-alones, such as Temptation and Why Did I Get Married? All of the films have been met with varying degrees of praise and success. But who has actually sat down and watched all of them? Inspired by that question, I decided to review all of Perry’s film in order to grade and rank each film.
To see how they fall in order (from worst to best), flip through the gallery above. For a more in-depth, critical analysis keep on reading!

Hollywood usually ignores the rules of genetics when it comes to casting family members in movies. Even some of our favorite films of all time, from "The Godfather" to "The Royal Tenenbaums" feature relatives that no combination of chromosomes could have realistically created. But every once in a while, the showbiz powers that be strike casting gold with actors who resemble each other enough to believably share a last name.
Here are 12 pairs of co-stars who you'd swear could be related.

The Hunger Games, in fact, was down two spots, also trailing the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic drama The Lucky One, based on Nicholas Sparks‘ bestselling novel. All three films performed above expectations. According to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo, Think Like a Man took in a surprisingly strong $33.63 million — about 10% above early estimates released as late as Friday night — averaging a highly impressive $16,693 per-theater at 2,017 locations. It has become distributor Sony Pictures/ScreenGems’ biggest hit targeted at black Americans, surpassing the Beyoncé Knowles‘ 2009 movie Obsessed, which earned $28.6 million (approx. $29.8 million today). Chicago – The female heroine driven film “The Hunger Games” had held the top spot for the past four weeks but has been knocked out by “Think Like a Man” based on Steve Harvey’s best-selling book. The movie is directed by Tim Story and written by Keith Merryman & David A. Newman starring Michael Ealy (“Barbershop”), Jerry Ferrara (“Entourage”), Meagan Good (“The Steve Harvey Show”), Regina Hall (“Death at a Funeral”), Kevin Hart (“The Five-Year Engagement”), Taraji P. Henson (“The Family that Preys”), Terrence J (“Sparkle”), Jenifer Lewis (“Meet the Browns”), Romany Malco (“Baby Mama”), Gary Owen (“Daddy Day Care”), and Gabrielle Union (“Bad Boys 2”). Michael Ealy, Think Like a Man The Hunger Games has lost the box-office crown at the North American box office. After four weekends on top, Gary Ross' film version of Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel has been beaten by two new entries: Tim Story's comedy Think Like a Man, based on the bestselling book by TV/radio comedian Steve Harvey and whose target audience are Us blacks, and the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic drama The Lucky One, based on a bestselling Nicholas Sparks novel and aimed at American / Canadian teenagers and young women, and their boyfriends and/or gal pals (regardless of ethnicity, apparently, though both leads are white). As per early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Think Like a Man may reach $30 million at 2,017 theaters this weekend after taking in $11 million on Friday. Distributor Sony Pictures/ScreenGems had been (officially) predicting $17 million. Believe their "prediction" at your own risk.

At the end of what could become the highest-grossing February in history, four new releases enter the fray this weekend. Act of Valor is targeting first place with a very wide release (3,039 theaters), though it will face tough competition from Tyler Perry's Good Deeds (around 2,800 screens at 2,132 venues). Wanderlust (2,001 theaters) and Gone (2,186 locations) are also debuting this weekend, though it's unlikely either of them creates much of a stir.Act of Valor is easily one of Relativity Media's most aggressively marketed movies so far. Beginning with the debut trailer last October and continuing through four Super Bowl commercials earlier this month (two pre-game, one in-game, and one post-game spot), the studio has clearly gotten the message out that Act of Valor is "a motion picture event starring active duty Navy SEALs." Whether that's an event that's interesting to a wide audience remains to be seen*most previews skirt...

The laughs won’t stop here. Deadline.com reports Fox’s animated comedies Family Guy and The Cleveland Show will return next season. That puts Seth MacFarlane’s Griffin family right into a tenth season, while Cleveland Brown’s family spin-off will see their fourth. You guessed it. American Dad is also so fortunate. It has been renewed for a seventh season. Please note, The Cleveland Show is only in its second season currently, even though it is now slated to stick around at least until season four (the two shows are on different production schedules).

Tyler Perry favorite Taraji P. Henson, last seen in The Family That Preys and I Can Do Bad All By Myself, has been cast in Lost creator J.J. Abrams' next venture.
She was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting performance in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. The actress, who first gained notoriety in Hustle & Flow, will play a detective named Carter in Person of Interest, which revolves around a retired CIA agent who is recruited by a billionaire to be a vigilante crime fighter in New York.
Do you think Person Of Interest will be as big a hit as Lost was? And will J.J. Abrams continue his tradition of planting coded "spoilers" in the mass media?...

Like him or not, Tyler Perry is a phenom to his audience, having amassed half a billion dollar in the box office, not counting his success in the stage circuit. Yet he is not without his fair share of detractors—from prominent African-Americans offended by Perry's stereotyping to film critics offended by Perry's aptitude.
Recently, Lionsgate released Perry's most successful films on Blu-ray, so we thought it'd be the perfect opportunity to reassess five entries from Tyler Perry's filmography, as well as the stage version of Madea's Big Happy Family, which Perry is already adapting into a film.

Most directors prefer to play amongst the genres and dabble in each (and they typically benefit from the experience), but sometimes a director digs in, hunkers down, and cranks out one movie after another for the select audience that has projected them throughout their success. Tyler Perry is one such director. He knows his niche. His audience supports his endeavors (so far, unfailingly). And he continues down his road unabated by harsh words from critics (even I have to admit to having bashed on his work) or any threat from a competing filmmaker.

The audience Tyler Perry has pursued went neglected by larger Hollywood studios for quite some time; the meager fare those studios did produce always tended toward condescending drivel that...

Chicago – Some studios slowly roll their catalog films out to Blu-ray as directors or actors release new films with which to tie-in but Lionsgate has decided that holiday season 2010 is the time to import most of Tyler Perry’s films to the HD format just as his “For Colored Girls” is turning out to be a critical and commercial disappointment. Catch up with five of his previously-released films along with the Blu-ray release of “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family: The Play.”
As far as a review goes, Lionsgate has always treated Tyler Perry fans well and these releases are no different. The HD video and audio are above-average and every film includes special features. As for the movies themselves, “Why Did I Get Married?” is easily the best (although the sequel is horrendous) and “The Family That Preys” has moments but I personally can’t stand anything...

Every one of us is expendable-ah! Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. Anyway, as you can see, a line has clearly been drawn this week with the two biggest releases, The Expendables and Eat Pray Love, catering very heavily to male and female demographics respectively. Other noteworthy new discs include The Winning Season starring Sam Rockwell, Rob Reiner's Flipped, Joaquin Phoenix mock doc I'm Still Here, and, from the visionary director of Catwoman, Fire And Ice: The Dragon Chronicles! If that's not enough to keep you occupied, we've also got the nuclear arms documentary Countdown to Zero, the newly restored cut of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, and pretty much all of Tyler Perry's complete filmography on Blu-ray! What will you be buying or renting this week? The Expendables [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Eat Pray Love [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Flipped [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) The Winning Season [7] The Disappearance of Alice Creed...

Despite an abnormally large week-to-week decline, Megamind managed to hold off Unstoppable to top the box office for the second straight week. The week's other new releases, Skyline and Morning Glory, had middling grosses, while holdover Due Date plummeted. Overall box office was down around 14 percent from last year, when 2012 led with a massive $81.7 million. Megamind earned $33.6 million to bring its 14-day total to $93.3 million. Its 44 percent second-week drop was steeper than that of any other DreamWorks Animation movie besides the Madagascar movies. Its total wasn't so hot, either: it's noticeably behind Despicable Me ($137.6 million), Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa ($121.5 million), Monsters Vs. Aliens ($118.4 million) and How to Train Your Dragon ($108.5 million) through the same point.Unstoppable cruised in to second place with $28.9 million in its first week. While the gross was off from The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 ($32 million), it was about even with Man on Fire ($29.2 million...
