Getting only one part of the horror equation right, A Darker Reality offers some visceral scenes of torture but without much of a story or any characters to make us care. Instead, the film fills its time with an empty relationship of stale banter between a detective and a psychiatrist investigating a case about missing girls; had this pairing had any chemistry at all, it would have gone a long way towards giving the film some substance. Sadly, the male lead lacks any personality at all, and woman seems to have been chosen for being a pretty face, and not for the ability to act. All that A Darker Reality really gives us is the unfortunate mental image of Daniel Baldwin masturbating in the grand tradition of auto-erotic asphyxiation. Thanks for that.

You know, whenever I open my mailbox and find a package of DVDs from Planet Fury, I throw up a little bit in my mouth. "Why?", you might ask. Because I know that, in among the really good flicks, there's going to be a really bad one. Not a "so bad it's good" flickershow. Those, I love. No...I mean really Bad.
And then there's A Darker Reality.
A Darker Reality follows the investigation of Lapd Detective Alex "Cold Steel" Belasco (Burns) and Dr. Jesse Metcalf (Doench) as they hunt for a serial killer known as "The Ghost" (Baldwin). Actually, the two of them spend a great deal of the time seeing who can overact more. And the "Maurice Evans Ham Award" for 2008 goes to...Daniel Baldwin! So that's where those excess pounds came from,...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films.
Director: Chris Kazmier.
Writer: Sxv'leithan Essex.
A six month streak of not having to turn a movie off early has been broken by Phase 4 Films' A Darker Reality. This reviewer wanted to turn this film off at the twenty minute mark, but an obligation kept this critic watching until about the one hour point. The film did not improve. Starring Daniel Baldwin, A Darker Reality is a reimaging of Chris Kazmier's earlier film Dark Reality (2006). This product was finished in 2008; unsurprisingly, this follow-up waited three years before finding a release date. And this reviewer hopes that Kazmier gives up on this atorcious series or finds money to improve his filmmaking style. Full of bad acting, zero musical selections, dark sets and tortuous scenes, A Darker Reality gets a place on 28Dla's Worst Films of...

Born of Earth will be looking for distribution at the European Film Market, with Multivisionnaire Pictures showing the film. The market begins this Friday, the 12th, with a whole slate of horror pictures making their way to the continent. Born of Earth stars Daniel Baldwin (A Darker Reality), Brad Dourif (Halloween II) and James Russo (Dark Woods). Coincidentally, Russo plays a similar role, as sheriff, in both Dark Woods and Born of Earth. Here, however this picture is much more action oriented and classified in the creature feature, horror sub-genre. Very little info' has surfaced on this feature, since its completion in 2008. The Efm might help Born of Earth find North American or worldwide distribution.
A synopsis for Born of Earth:
"One night, Danny's wife is killed as creatures from hell come to snatch his children. 5-years later Danny remains haunted and criminalized by a community that never believed his story.
