Saving the Italian Version

Reconstructing 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' (2004)

*** (out of 4)

When Sergio Leone's THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY had its American premiere it was missing over twenty-minutes of footage so when it came time for the U.S. DVD release, the producers decided to go back, find the original Italian cut and let American audiences see it for the first time. The only problem is that a lot of the footage was in really bad shape, which was going to need special work and the other bigger problem is that some of the dialogue had never been dubbed into English so they had to try and get Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach back. This 11-minute featurette does a very good job at explaining the two different versions of the film and we also get an interview with the producer of the release who talks about his decisions to add the footage, leave certain stuff out and re-do the soundtrack. Fans of the film will certainly want to check this out as it explains the alternate versions in a very good way and those unfamiliar with the history of the picture will also get a great understanding of what happened.
