I came away from this City Confidential not thinking too much about the crime story, because that really presented that well, but more of the town of Gatlinburg. I've never seen a town be so rural and beautiful on one hand and so tacky and touristy on the other. You've got real beauty and real ugliness all in pretty close proximity.
The town folks interviewed in this show didn't seem to mind; they'd put up with some obnoxious tourists as long as they could empty their pocketbooks with souvenirs and such. The trade-off seems acceptable. In this show, the area is labeled "The Las Vegas of the mountains." Call me old-fashioned, but I'd like to see what this place would look like without all the tee-shirt, fast-food places and neon signs. With the Great Smoky Mountain National Park adjoining one end of the town, I'll bet the area would look spectacular.
Anyway, I was kind of surprised the crime was so poorly constructed in here. Several times, I'd scratch my head and wonder, "Well, what's the story here? How and why was the crime - two innocent people murdered - done? I'm not sure it's ever explained here, except that these culprits were hard-nosed low-life people from the streets of Atlanta. Apparently, they came up here to Gatlinsburg and just wound up killing two people who were employed at a small motel where they wanted to crash for the night.
The main figure was interesting because of his nickname and his bizarre appearance. He was "Tattoo Eddie," a mean thug, a violent hustler most of his life. He had 136 tattoos on his body....and this wasn't today where "tats" are fashionable. He kind of stood out in the crowd.
