Jessica Capshaw is checking back into Grey Sloan.
The actress, who spent 10 seasons playing Dr. Arizona Robbins from 2009-2018, is returning to reprise her role in the upcoming 20th season of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Capshaw will be joined by Alex Landi, who returns as Dr. Nico Kim, and franchise newcomers Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares as guest stars in the milestone season of the Shonda Rhimes-produced medical drama. Additional guest stars are expected to be announced as the show inches closer toward its strikes-delayed return on March 14 at 9 p.m.
Capshaw exited Grey’s in 2018, at the end of its 14th season when Arizona moved from Seattle to New York so her daughter, Sofia, could be in the same city with her other mother, Callie (former series regular Sara Ramirez), as the fan-favorite former couple “Calzona” appeared poised for a reunion.

In the 15 years since Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she has appeared in many other shows like Star Wars: Rebels, The Mandalorian, and most recently The Book of Boba Fett. Her wit, Force-wielding skills, and her desire to do good for the Galaxy even after leaving the Jedi Order have made her a fan-favorite character with fans eager to see her in a solo series.
Because Ahsoka has been involved in so many eras throughout Star Wars history from The Clone Wars to the New Republic, there are plenty of characters, both familiar and otherwise, that we can expect to see throughout the series. Ahsoka will feature the return of several Rebels and Clone Wars characters, as well as the introduction of new characters we haven’t yet seen in canon before.

Ava DuVernay has “opted to not renew” her overall deal with Warner Bros. Television following its expiration at the end of the month, TheWrap has learned.
The “Selma” director signed the multi-year agreement with Wbtv back in 2018, which was estimated to be valued at around $100 million. The deal was struck with former Wbtv Group chairman Peter Roth, who left the position in 2021.
Sources said that the decision to end the deal was mutual between Wbtv and DuVernay and made prior to the start of the writers’ strike.
DuVernay, who is expected to focus on her current film slate, is currently in post-production on her film “Caste,” which she is directing. The film stars Vera Farmiga, Niecy Nash, Nick Offerman, Jon Bernthal, Audra McDonald and Connie Nielsen.

Ava DuVernay has ended her rich overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, multiple sources confirm to Variety.
While news of this decision comes amid the writers strike, the contract talks were unrelated. DuVernay’s deal was set to expire on May 31 and the two parties came to a “mutual decision not to renew.”
DuVernay signed the multi-year agreement in 2018, which was reported to be valued at $100 million, following the parties’ successful collaboration on OWN’s “Queen Sugar,” which signed off last year after seven seasons.
“Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented writer, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire with her art is exceeded only by her ability to entertain,” former Warner Bros. TV chief Peter Roth said in a statement announcing the pact. (Channing Dungey is the current chairman and CEO of Wbtvg.)

Between Warner Bros. axing her DC Comics movie, "New Gods," Netflix dropping her fantasy novel series adaptation, "Wings of Fire," and The CW canceling her DC superhero drama, "Naomi," it feels like it's been way too long since Ava DuVernay got to make headlines for good reasons. Thankfully, that changes with the celebrated storyteller's next directorial feature, "Caste," which began filming in December 2022 in Georgia ahead of planned shoots in Germany and India. This would be the "Selma" filmmaker's first time behind the camera on a full-length movie since her 2018 Disney fantasy adventure, "A Wrinkle in Time".
To her credit, DuVernay hasn't allowed those various cancelations to slow her down. Quite the opposite, she wrapped up her familial drama series "Queen Sugar" while also helming part of HBO Max's "Dmz" comic book miniseries adaptation over that same period of time (among other things — more on that to come). Do you know what the greatest thing about this industry is? You simply never know what you're going to encounter on any given day. Uber-talented filmmaker Greta Gerwig making a "Barbie" movie? Sure, why not! A perfectly innocuous Sight and Sound poll inciting fierce debate and causing some in film circles to collectively melt down in spectacular fashion? Yup, business as usual! But occasionally, something of real import breaks through all the noise and clutter to make even the most seasoned pros in the business stop in their tracks, look down at their phone, and go, "Wait, what?" Folks ... this is one of those times.
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay has rapidly ascended the ranks of Hollywood after making a name for herself with "Selma," the 2016 documentary "13th," the blockbuster "A Wrinkle in Time," and even her comic book adaptation "Dmz." Now, however, comes perhaps her most exciting project yet: Ice cream!

The number and range of superstars vying for Emmys this year – everyone from Kanye West and 50 Cent to Mick Jagger and Imagine Dragons – is staggering.
More than 600 entries in the seven Emmy music categories were unveiled today as voting began for the nominations round. Nominations will be announced by the Television Academy on July 12.
The most star-studded category is that of best song. “Euphoria” star Zendaya and composer Labrinth, who won Emmys for the series in 2020, have entered two songs from this past season as co-writers and could score again given the huge popularity of the HBO series. Labrinth has also entered in the series-score category.
Country stars Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert are up for songs in “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Queer Eye,” respectively. Music docs are included too, as Sheryl Crow has entered a song from the new Showtime documentary on her life and Mary J. Blige...

HBO Max’s new dystopian drama Dmz is based on the comic book series of the same name. Although the source material was released early in the 21st century, its themes are still relevant in the Covid landscape.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Hilton Dresden moderated a conversation with the cast and creative team, including actors Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt, Freddy Miyares and Hoon Lee, as well as executive producers Roberto Patino and Ernest Dickerson, who served as writer and director, respectively, for THR Presents, powered by Vision Media.
Each member of the creative team had a different relationship to the original text. Patino bought the comic back in 2005, when it first came out. He explained: “I instantly became hooked. Composer Kris Bowers could find himself landing more than one Emmy nomination come July.
From composing the music to “Bridgerton” to “Inventing Anna,” and reuniting with Ava Duvernay for “Colin in Black and White” to penning an original song for “Dear White People,” the odds are stacked in his favor as he has multiple paths to landing a nomination and even win.
Bowers returned to score “Bridgerton’s” second season. The composer says he spent a lot of time focusing on Kate (Simone Ashley) and Anthony’s (Jonathan Bailey) theme and how it should sound.
As the characters go from enemies to lovers, Bowers explains he knew their storyline would be “complicated, messy and devastating for somebody.” His initial version of the theme was “pretty dark. It’s kind of sad,” he admits. But it’s a swelling theme, and by the time the two characters kiss, Bowers says, “We...

Benjamin Bratt isn’t sure whether he would be able to rise up as a leader in dystopian future like his character, Parco Delgado, in “Dmz.” “It’s tough enough being a dad and a good one at that. It takes a lot of focus, a lot of concentration, a lot of work and a lot of invested time and love, but it is my favorite focus at the moment,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). But the idea of whether he could do such a thing reinforced something that he truly loved about this story. “It’s when circumstances press upon you enough where it forces you outside of your own perception of yourself and into actions that you might not have otherwise undertaken, where true leaders rise to the occasion.”

If you watched television in the last two years, chances are you’ve heard the music of Emmy-winning composer Kris Bowers. Bowers’ compositions can be heard in multiple series and limited series, including “Bridgerton,” “Colin in Black and White,” “Dear White People,” “Inventing Anna,” “Dmz” and “We Own This City.” Watch above to see more of our exclusive video interview.
For the second season of Netflix’s hit period drama “Bridgerton,” Bowers worked to create new themes in his score while maintaining the show’s signature classical sound. The composer says he worked to match the music with the evolution of established characters while finding new palettes to match the show’s newer characters. “I’m always trying to find these really strong themes with the story or the characters and represent them musically and then develop them through the course of the show,” he explains. “We want to play...

“We’re telling a story about New York, which if you take a 10 cross section of New York, you are going to get all people from all walks of life, from all faiths, and we needed to do that justice,” Dmz showrunner Roberto Patino says of the decision to look at the periphery of the acclaimed comic for its March 17 launching HBO Max adaptation.
“I have a very specific angle in this, which is to celebrate Latinos in specific, but all people of color,” Patino adds, joining us today with Dmz star Benjamin Bratt on Hero Nation.
“What is this really about?” Bratt remembers asking himself he told us about this “immense canvas” of America in “the throngs of a second civil war” and those left behind on the island of Manhattan. Benjamin Bratt has been cast in the Natasha Lyonne-led Peacock series “Poker Face,” which hails from creator Rian Johnson.
Variety has learned exclusively that Bratt is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding cast. Another recently announced cast members include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Stephanie Hsu, and David Castañeda. Plot and character details for the series are being kept largely under wraps, though sources say the show will follow a procedural format and see Lyonne’s character working to solve different murders in each episode.
Bratt most recently appeared opposite Rosario Dawson in the HBO Max limited series “Dmz,” which debuted in March on the streamer. He also previously starred in the Fox music drama “Star” from Lee Daniels. His other TV roles include “Law & Order,” “24: Live Another Day,” “Private Practice,” “The Cleaner,” and multiple appearances on “Modern Family.” In film, Bratt is known for starring in features like “Piñero,...

Roberto Patino acknowledges that the dystopian themes of “Dmz” have their roots in films like “The Warriors” and “Escape from New York.” But the showrunner wanted to do something completely different with those elements. “We want it to run in the opposite direction of the dystopian tropes and we want to tell a story of an upward slope and a unity of a new start,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He also made sure not to get lost or hung up in how America got to the point that it is in the show. “I don’t care how we might get to civil war. That’s not what this show is about. This is a story of people coming together, a story of hope and a story of rebirth.”

Rosario Dawson knows a little something about living in desolation. While discussing her dystopian drama Dmz at Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday, the actress recounted her Coney Island roots and how her surroundings looked very similar to the world that HBO Max built for the limited series.
“I grew up on the lower Eastside, born in Coney Island, and grew up in an abandoned building,” said Dawson, who was joined onstage by director/executive producer Ernest Dickerson. “That neighborhood was, like, bombed out. As a community we knew that no one was coming to rescue us. We had to work together to create community.”

Photo: 'Dmz' Strong Female Lead: Not Just in Thought But in Action From her very first line on screen, Rosario Dawson captures the audience as Alma Ortega, a New York City Medic who is trying to find her son after losing him 6 years earlier when New York City is declared a “Dmz” during the second American Civil War. Dawson, as in all her roles, is an incredible force as Alma. She commands the screen and the attention of every scene she is in with her authentic intensity and rawness. She is an actress so very close to and real with her emotions that like all the greats of the craft, make you forget that she is playing a character on the screen. HBO Max continues to venture into the comic book landscape but this time it’s Dmz, a series created by Brian Wood and it’s caught in the middle of a second American Civil War that has turned Manhattan into a demilitarized zone; The new show stars Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt, and Hoon Lee. This is a limited series packed with only four episodes; however, in today’s television landscape that’s overcrowded with content, is the Dmz something worth going out of the way to see? In early 2020, Rosario Dawson was acting in “Dmz,” a dystopian adaptation of the DC Comics series about a war-torn version of Manhattan in the midst of a second Civil War. When Covid shutdowns hit, “Dmz” was put on hold, and by the time it resumed last year, Dawson had already acted in “Dopesick,” another timely miniseries about tears in the fabric of American society. By the time she took the stage after the premiere of the first episode of “Dmz” at SXSW last week, she had spent so long contemplating such consequential themes that the weight of the moment overwhelmed her.
“I’m so emotional right now,” she said, welling up. “This is so real for so many people in the world around us.”

This article contains spoilers for Dmz episode 1.
There’s never really an ideal time to premiere a TV show about war.
Invariably, someone somewhere on the globe is experiencing the brutal destruction of armed combat at any given moment, making a fictionalized depiction of it a dicey proposition for any storyteller. This is a lesson that HBO Max limited series Dmz understands quite intimately.
The DC comic upon which HBO Max’s series is based was first released in 2005 and served as a commentary on its era’s wars in the Middle East. The comic’s storyline, which imagined a second American civil war turning Manhattan into a desolate demilitarized zone between two warring factions, could have just as easily been set in Baghdad, Iraq or Kabul, Afghanistan. It was a way to present to the Western world that their worst case post-apocalyptic scenario was someone else’s unavoidable present.

One reason why Dmz hits so close to home is that many people still believe that the USA is headed toward a revolution and a possible civil war that will tear the nation apart yet again. Some would say that the nation has already been torn apart and that it’s just a matter of time before the fireworks really start, while others are hunkering down to prepare themselves for what might eventually come. In Dmz, the HBO Max version at least, the nation has already suffered a schism that has torn the island of Manhattan from the rest of the

HBO has put out two new featurettes about "Dmz," starring Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt. The miniseries premieres today on HBO Max and is based on the DC Comics title from its Vertigo imprint about the story of a fictional 21st-century civil war in the United States. I feel like I had to put in the word "fictional" here because there are so many indications that this might not continue to be fiction. I mean, I hope I'm wrong. Either way, despite the fact that this hits pretty close to home, it's fascinating and I can't wait to watch!

When the comic series "Dmz" arrived nearly 20 years ago, it felt like a work of science fiction. But in 2022, its basic premise -- a second American civil war has divided the nation, with warring armies stalling out on either side of Manhattan -- feels unsettling. Like something that could actually happen. A subject that needed reinvention and retooling for a scarier, more turbulent time.

Almost no one could have predicted the unprecedented global events of the past two years, which is why Freddy Miyares is quite surprised by how HBO Max’s “Dmz” has only become more relevant over time.
The dystopian miniseries — in which Manhattan has become a demilitarized zone after a second civil war breaks out in America — comes after two years of a global pandemic that has kept millions of individuals isolated. It’s also debuting amid Russia’s devastating war in Ukraine, which the rest of the world has watched from afar.
“Even now, considering what’s happening on the other side of the world, the effects of war — what happens to a community, to a culture, and how is it preserved? Where do we maintain humanity? The series really does encapsulate that,” Miyares told TheWrap of how the show has proven timelier than he could have imagined. “It’s a beautiful and tragic story,...

It’s not hard to see why a story about a U.S. at war with itself might have seemed especially piquant to producers over the past several years. And, indeed, “Dmz,” HBO Max’s new limited series based on a comic serial, feels capital-r Relevant, as if trying to fit in a civics textbook’s worth of ideas about who we are and what citizenship means into four episodes’ worth of action.
It’s not always seamless. Indeed, the pivots between different areas of “Dmz’s” universe often land thuddingly. We’re following Rosario Dawson’s Alma Ortega, who lost track of her son during a rapid evacuation of New York City as civil war began; some eight years later, she’s broken into what is now the wilds of Manhattan, abandoned by authorities and governed by warlords, in order to find him. Based on the DC Comics series from Riccardo Burchielli and Brian Wood of the same name, the demilitarized zone of Roberto Patino’s four-part HBO series “Dmz” can be full of surprises. It’s what we know as Manhattan, after a civil war between the Free States of America and the United States of America. We initially see the Dmz as a place of ruins, of sprawling weeds taking over once busy intersections, but then realize the possibility it shows.

They say the devil is in the details, and that is certainly true for the dystopia dazzle that is Ava DuVernay and Roberto Patino’s Dmz.
Having just had its world premiere at SXSW today and set to debut on HBO Max on March 17, the Rosario Dawson, Hoon Lee and Benjamin Bratt-led adaptation of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s comic of the same name can be best summarized in the massive graffiti splayed across a dilapidated Manhattan building in the series – “We’re Still Here.”
Yes, in the agile sociological hands of 13th and When They See Us director DuVernay, it is all still here, even more so in a further broken America. The racial, gender, class warfare and constant betrayal that has been soaked in the soil since before America even became a country is still here in the near future of Dmz and the wound is...

In “Dmz,” the first thing you’ll notice are the colors. Moonlight blue floods the sparse room where Alma (Rosario Dawson) sleeps between shifts. A sickly green shades the bathroom where she’s detoxed before seeing patients. Bright lights smack against black edges in the stadium serving as a detainment center for people trying to cross the border illegally. These opening shots provide a stark impression of an America nearly a decade into its second civil war. Alma works in Brooklyn, as she waits for a path into Manhattan, which is now a demilitarized zone caught between the remaining United States and the so-called Free States of America. It’s also the last place she saw her son, Christian.
New York City, she’s told, is dangerous. The 300,000 non-citizens still inhabiting the island have no government, no police, no laws. They were either stranded or chose to live in anarchy.

Dystopian fiction has been pretty popular on television for a while now, thanks to shows like "The Walking Dead," "The Handmaid's Tale," and "Snowpiercer." As our own world feels increasingly unfriendly, many turn to dystopian dramas to feel less alone in their fears, or get some type of survivalist wish-fulfillment. Most dystopian shows are incredibly heavy, dealing with the darkest parts of humanity in blunt and brutal ways. In the end, they all walk a careful balance between inspiring hope and fear, reminding us that we're always one step away from being survivors ourselves.
