Haunting
Faristuta4 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a chilling episode, and I liked how it was directed, keeping the viewers engaged. This tragic crime reminds me of the List murders in 1971. Both John List and Xavier DuPont have many things n common and the murders they committed are very similar in many ways.

My favorite episode
bladgab4 July 2020
1st People who don't like hearing other languages should travel more or actually try to learn a new language. I am actually glad this episode was filmed in the original language. 2nd Up to this point we get this docuseries is about unsolved crimes, so I tried to enjoy this episode for what it was, and actually it was really good, this episode stands apart from the other ones of the series for how it is narrated, I had never heard about this case and the psychology behind it is very interesting, you can actually connect with this family and only imagine how horrid everything that happened was.

Subtitles...
ddoming335 July 2020
For those complaining about subtitles, Netflix does offer audio in different languages, even English.

The best episode so far.

Warning: Spoilers
People need to return to school.

They review this episode low because they have to read subtitles . It's difficult for them to read their own language. Imagine that !

Well except for the English spoken population, you can find in the world people speaking French, Greek, Italian , Spanish and many MANY more languages. It's good for your own education to be able to read your own language.

Take it as a lesson if you don't want to hear other languages, or just skip the episode.

I personally LOVE it . I love to hear and learn more cultures .

This episode has indeed mystery. It makes you wonder , why ? He loved this family . Was his own pride higher than his love for his family? But if he did loved his family and kill them because he didn't want to disappoint them ,with the financial reality , why he didn't committed suiside ?

Love from a Greek person , watching an episode in French reading the subtitles in Greek . Super easy xxx

This is a GREAT episode, haunting. Those who gave it a 1 because they had to read subtitles (?!) should go back to school.

Very good episode

Warning: Spoilers
First off, I'm literally cringing for the people complaining about the subtitles and the French people not speaking English. This episode was so sad and mysterious. They gave his motive as being related to money but is that strong enough reason to commit such a horrible, meticulously planned crime?

Awesome , chilling episode
benkhalifa-074758 July 2020
Extremely well narrated and you can connect with the family.

Ignore the poor reviews criticising English subtitles. Hearing this tragic story in French adds authenticity. And the subtitles are very easy to follow except for those brought up all their lives on WhatsApp messages like how r u and c u l8r.

Great episode

This episode was my favorite and now I want to find other resources for this. I'd love to see Casefile do a podcast about this.

Initially I was a little put off by the subtitles because I like to do other things while watching but it quickly drew me in.

A true mystery with a huge amount of sorrow
livin_the_weekend28 October 2020
*NON-SPOILER*

The elephant in the room is that this does have to be read via subtitles as the story is spoken in French. But believe me, you get into it very quickly and the fact you're reading the story quickly leaves your conscience. This is the most bizarre and saddening mystery stories that has been brought to my attention. How this incident has took place and under the particular circumstances has left me with a huge amount of sorrow and makes you question the nature of some of the people we have to unfortunately share this planet with. A must watch for those real life mystery enthusiasts.

Good episode, weird editing
neoke2012 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Is the episode good? Yes, for sure! Probably the best so far of this series. However, as a French speaker, I feel the editing is a bit off, and it often feels as if they took a sentence said by a person, and cut it to make it sound the way they wanted.

I understand editing is sometimes necessary, because you have to respect the length an episode has to be, or sometimes people don't speak clearly, but when it's almost constant, it makes question whether the interviews are genuine, or if the editors manipulated them.

At the end, the lady being interviewed also says something along the lines of "he fooled everybody" and while the subtitles say "He" she clearly says "she", which makes no sense at all and makes me wonder if this wasn't taken out of context, and used for dramatic effect... Which isn't great since the original story doesn't need drama added to it.

Murdering For Lack Of Money . . . .
sundayatdusk-978599 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Did Count Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes actually kill his family because he thought having them deal with being broke was worse? If he shot them all, how come there was no blood anywhere? Did he later kill himself in the wilderness or escape to a foreign land?

While this film had unanswered questions, it was pretty obvious the father killed everyone, but not himself at the time. That beautiful family obliviated. For what? For running out of money? Yes, he was a proud count, but lots of individuals with nobility titles have gone broke, without them resorting to murder. He even got one of his sons, who would have inherited his title one day, to return home from university so he could kill him, too. In addition, he killed the family's two dogs.

He did not kill himself at home, however, and obviously tried to buy time by sending a fake letter about the family's whereabouts. That would suggest he did not intend to kill himself, but to flee. Is he out there somewhere pretending not to be a mass murderer? Or is his skeleton somewhere in France where it may one day be found? Yes, his whereabouts is indeed an unsolved mystery.

P. S. This film is in French, with very easy to read English subtitles.

Unsolved?
Calicodreamin5 July 2020
An interesting episode for sure, taking us to France for a murder mystery. The interviews relevant, the storyline well established, and good visuals. However.... is this crime really unsolved?

Unusual
brandonneicke7 July 2020
If anyone has seen the new show the outsiders then this seems extremely eerie. Someone who may be possessed by some sort of entity and goes off complete the rails. The idea that it's an evil entity is very unlikely but when you hear stories like this you can't help but think it's a stronger force. No blood no trace of murder and no real evidence he did it other then the body. I think that's just crazy and it's definitely a unique story and done pretty well. I wouldn't mind a narrator for episodes with only subtitles and not in English

Unsolved story make viewers feel curious
ngoc-822719 November 2022
Despite it is a documentary film, viewers still think it's just a crime film. But it's not, it's the true story.

I couldn't imagine that really happened with a family. I still wonder after what the crime did with that family, how can she/he face with himself/herself day by day. Or maybe something happened, but we don't know.

Hope when crime dies, he/she will let us know by a letter all about the story.

Nice episode you can watch and feel. Maybe all the assumption of filmmakers or casts think about the crime are wrong. Only he/her truly know the fact, but it's so weird. Thanks for having a nice film.

Pride Trumped All
Pequod881 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Imagine a man so prideful that he chose to murder his wife and children rather than be revealed as a failure. Xavier was on the brink of bankruptcy as his meticulous plan took shape. Drugged the family. Shot them dead in their sleep with his late father's rifle (silencer equipped). Buried them in a prepared "crypt" beneath a balcony on the terrace, and fled to escape justice.

While Xavier clearly expected it to take much longer for the bodies to be found, the police returned again and again until the carefully concealed bodies of family and dogs were discovered.

The escape must have been as carefully planned as the murders, for the killer has never been found. Cargo ship? Boat ride? Train trip? A decade after the murders the truth may never be known. This was an especially haunting episode. Best of the season, imo. Owning up to one's failures is courageous. Murdering one's family is cowardly. Here's hoping the killer is found in time to be tried, convicted, sentenced, and jailed.

6

Warning: Spoilers
It's a good story, I would give it better mark than 6 but I can't. The name of this TV series is "Unsolved Mysteries". I didn't see in this episode anything myterious. Husband killed his family and ran away or killed himself. Where is the mistery? The mistery why he killed them? It's very simple. Even in this TV series you can hear the facts. He was running out of money, he always liked to show off to his friends, family and others. It looks that he lived just to show off what good life he is having. When everything started crashing(it seems it's been for decades) he decided to finish everything. The main thing is aristocrats may have good life but they have dar secrets. It reminded of Jeffrey Epstein. He was rich and really bad guy. His friends looked very cynical. Talking more about money then actual case.

Butchered french...
ychemineau11 October 2020
If you're fluent in french, don't watch this. The french audio has been edited by someone who only had one year of french lessons in high school. Some sentences have so much added and/or cut parts which make them have no sense at all. So, wether you understand french or not, you will definitely have to rely on the subtitles !

Pride kills
theforager4 July 2020
Apparently, this is the story of a father from a proud family lineage that sought pride in killing his own family rather then accepting the failure and fighting with the circumstances. Xavier was for sure a mastermind with no shame on his act, the way he left his trail and looked into camera.

In Netflix, there is no English audio for this and watching this with English title description is horrible.

Really, Netflix?
Amelia4054 July 2020
The episode is in French with subtitles. Why does Netflix continue to do this with their shows? Just make a separate international version of the series. Most people don't want to read a show. Stop it!

The entire episode was in French. The mystery seemed like it would be very interesting but I didn't want to have. To read subtitles the whole time.
