Alex Cox on Why He’s Directing a ‘Repo Man’ Sequel: ‘Everything Has Changed and Nothing Has Changed’
Alex Cox’s 1984 “Repo Man” was a Reagan-era satire about consumerism and the Atomic Age. Its punk rock soundtrack transformed it into a cult hit, but its funny and strange combination of sci-fi, workplace comedy, and the fear of nuclear annihilation made it an enduring classic.
Forty years later, Cox will revisit the repo man and the world of bland, generic grocery store clerks stocking and selling “Food” and “Beer” day in and day out. He has written and will direct a sequel, “Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer,” and he told IndieWire why this film will embody “the repo world of 2024.”
Cox said “The Wages of Beer” will take place in a world of self-driving cars and an even more pressing threat of global destruction. “The advent of incredible technology means, for the repo man, that everything has changed — and nothing has changed,” he said via email.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”
TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

The fourth and final season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” arrives on Prime Video on June 30. It finds Ryan — now the new acting CIA director — unearthing internal corruption and suspicious black ops that leaves the United States vulnerable to attack. John Krasinski stars as the tough-as-nails Ryan.
Watch the “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” trailer:
“Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets” is a new docuseries that reveals the truth behind the myth of the wholesome religious family and their involvement with the predatory Bill Gothard and The Institute in Basic Life Principles. The organization’s abusive practices — and the insidious long political game it plays — is revealed on June 2. The Duggars and their 19 “happy” kids are exposed as frauds, while also being manipulated by Gothard and enduring the scandal of Josh, their sexually abusive son.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

The last few years have already afforded us multiple opportunities to reflect on the remarkable talents of Margaret Qualley, an actor who, since breaking out in TV’s “The Leftovers,” has delivered pure, clear-eyed conviction to just about anything: She’s equally persuasive playing an anxious novice nun in “Novitiate,” the regally glamorous Ann Reinking in “Fosse/Verdon” or a dazed, flirty Manson girl in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” These are all good parts in good projects; the utter credibility she brings to “Strange But True” is another kind of achievement. Qualley shows up at the start of Rowan Athale’s daft behind-picket-fences thriller, so pregnant it’s a wonder she can walk at all, to announce with a sweet, straight face that she’s miraculously bearing the child of a boy who died five years before. And we utterly believe her, or at least we believe that she believes herself.

Dutch actress and singer Carice van Houten is coming off almost a decade on HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones, in which she played mercurial Red Priestess Melisandre. Van Houten is also well known for movies including Race, Valkyrie, Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book and Repo Men. In her native Holland, the actress has won five prestigious Golden Calf awards at the Netherlands Film Festival.
We caught up with van Houten to talk about moving on from Game of Thrones, highlights from her time on the show, and what’s next (including a movie she says might be her best work yet). And yes, there are GoT spoilers below.
Deadline: After almost 10 years working on the cultural juggernaut that was Game of Thrones, how are you feeling now that it’s over?

“Game of Thrones” backlash hit a new level of outrage following the series’ penultimate episode, “The Bells.” Daenerys’ transformation into the Mad Queen has divided fans like no other twist in the show’s eight-season history. Other final season decisions, from Cersei’s uneventful death to Brienne losing her virginity to Jaime, also have been met with similar rage. While backlash can yield important critical perspectives (read IndieWire’s essay on “Thrones'” disrespectful treatment of women), the conversation around “Thrones” has gotten so drowned out by fans upset with the storytelling that barley anyone is giving attention to the one person who deserves overwhelming praise for “The Bells”: Director Miguel Sapochnik.
“The Bells” marked Sapochnik’s final episode of “Thrones” and capped off a six-episode directorial run that stands as some of the best filmmaking television or movies has seen this decade. Sapochnik got his start in film with his 2010 debut “Repo Men,...

Jude Law is the kind of guy that can be what you need him to be in a movie since he’s capable of being funny but not comedic and he’s very capable of being dramatic and can even take part in something that’s inordinately gory. Repo Men wasn’t exactly one of the best films in the world largely because the story didn’t feel as though it was fully fleshed out, but it was still a different approach for Jude since a lot of the movies he’s in are quite dramatic and allow him to express himself in a very honest

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Jude Law, who’s always been hard to pin down, and his title role in HBO Emmy Contender “The Young Pope” is no exception.
Bottom Line: As he embraces his mid-40s, Jude Law has morphed from British golden boy to globally bankable character actor. His range is wide, from tragic robot Gigolo Joe in Steven Spielberg’s “A.I.” to Robert Downey, Jr.’s comedy sidekick Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s blockbuster “Sherlock Holmes” franchise. Take that, Mr. Smarty-pants!
Ben finds out on Incorporated Season 1 Episode 8 that sometimes you can be too clever for your own good.
I know he's desperate to get Elena back and all (even though she told him to move on more than once), but doing a partial self lobotomy sounds like a bit of reach to me.
Ben: I'm just temporarily disconnecting some circuits.
Hendrick: Aaron isn't a circuit-it's who you are.
Ben: But he's not who I need to be right now.

Anyone who's watched TV before knows that this type of deal isn't gonna work, and for someone who's supposedly as smart as Ben should know better.

Emmy-award-winning TV director Miguel Sapochnik has signed on to make a Sinbad movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately, that should not be misinterpreted as a cinematic vehicle for ’90s-era comedy genius David “Sinbad” Adkins. This will be a film adaptation of the 14th-century Middle Eastern story-cycle of Sinbad The Sailor. Which also has the potential to be pretty good, especially since Sapochnik really made a name for himself due to his work on Game Of Thrones.

The director behind the insanely epic Game of Thrones episode "Battle of the Bastards," Miguel Sapochnick, has just landed another feature film directing gig. Studio 8 has hired him to develop a new Sinbad film with writer Kyle Killen, who is the creator of the TV series Lone Star and Mind Games.
If you've been watching Game of Thrones, then you know that directing those episodes looks like it is just as daunting as directing an epic big budget feature film. The episode "Battle of the Bastards" is easily one of the most epic things HBO or any other network has done for TV.
THR says that the film will be a reimagining of the legendary Sinbad, who was introduced in The Arabian Nights. The Sinbad stories "followed the rising and falling fortunes of a wily sailor who finds himself stranded on various islands or lands. After each adventure, he returns...

The Game of Thrones star on playing Nazi film director Leni Riefenstahl, getting into character and male nudity
Actor and singer Carice van Houten was born in the Netherlands in 1976. Acclaimed in her own country, where she has won a number of Golden Calf awards, she attracted international attention with her role in Paul Verhoeven’s 2006 film Black Book. Her English-language films include Valkyrie (2008), Repo Men and Black Death (both 2010). Since 2011, she has portrayed Melisandre in Game of Thrones. Now van Houten stars as Nazi film-maker and propagandist Leni Riefenstahl in a new film, Race, about African American athlete Jesse Owens and his impact on the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
What kind of research did you do into Leni Riefenstahl?
I watched a lot of her films, footage, read a lot about her. The more I knew about her the more I wished we could make a whole movie about her alone.

From a pop culture perspective, private detectives stand for all that’s memorable about film noir. The indifference, the wittiness, and the moral ambiguity that define each urban knight has since become the stuff of parodied legend. We’re talking about the mediators between the crooks and the cops, the embodiment of back alley grayness that’s so tough to pin down. P.I.’s could cooperate with the law if needed, but they could just as soon do business with the bad guys for the right price. To a certain extent, that is – shamus work has always attracted the ignored and the ethical. The Wild West has mythical men with no name, The Asphalt Jungle has names with investigating licenses attached to them. Instead of a poncho and a ten gallon hat, they’re provided a fedora and trench coat.

Melisandre, otherwise known as “The Red Woman” or “The Red Witch” (and several other names by Shireen Baratheon fans that I won’t mention) is one of the most loathed characters on Game of Thrones, but lately fans have had no choice but to put their faith in her as everyone’s favourite, as Jon Snow’s fate lies in her evil little hands.

In late 2014, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film Inherent Vice - a psychedelic dive into the La of the past- screened at at a special BAFTA preview with the director on hand to take part in a post-film Q&A.
Ably marshalled by film critic Mark Kermode, the discussion touched on the director's Thomas Pynchon adaptation and his collaborations with Joaquin Phoenix and composer Johnny Greenwood. Perhaps most interesting of all, however, was Anderson talking about his all-time favourite movie.
When asked by Kermode to choose, Anderson replied quickly with "The Treasure of Sierra Madre. There's no competition, it's the best," before hesitating to ponder the merits of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest.
"This is the game that's so f**king maddening," he said. "On the drive home you're like, no it's not Treasure of Sierra Madre its North by Northwest, it's Something Wild, it's Repo Men. The lists are so long.

Repo Men: Eska’s Latest a Gripping Coming of Age Narrative
Certain to be referred to as an indie film counterpart to Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 Django Unchained due to its depiction of black men involved in Civil War era bounty hunting, director Chris Eska’s emotionally engaging sophomore film, The Retrieval, is a resonant and haunting coming of age narrative that’s as adeptly written as it is performed. Tishuan Scott’s win for Breakthrough Performance at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival seems well placed, and will hopefully be an accolade that funnels some attention to the rather somber film.

Science fiction, man. I love it. But comic books make me want to hate it. I mean, I get that comic books aren’t really a literary medium. They can be, but they’re read mostly by people avoiding the commitment and sometimes challenge of a more rigorous, if still speculative, format, namely prose. Now I’m not going to pretend that prose Sf&F is always a step up from comics and, in fact, there’s pretty much an equal ratio of turds to gold (there’s some kind of law for this, I think). But so much more effort is put into the “science” part of science fiction in literature than it is in comics, and that seems to be an unfortunate result of the assumption (perhaps correctly) most comic book writers make that their audience isn’t interested in “harder” sci-fi or fantasy. But they try at it anyway sometimes,...

Even if you've never seen Park Chan-Wook's original "Oldboy," you've probably heard about a sequence that's whispered about in film school dorms and discussed endlessly through online message boards. At this point, it's taken on an almost mythical quality of notoriety, so much so that it's impossible to imagine Spike Lee's new, American version, starring Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen, without it. So what’s “Hieroglyph” all about? The series, set in ancient Egypt, centers on a notorious thief who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharaoh, navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers. Beacham will write, with “Repo Men’s” Miguel Sapochnik scheduled to direct the pilot. According to Fox head honcho Kevin Reilly, “Hieroglyph...
