The turning point
dani-2355029 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Almost exactly like the novel--Simon is caught by Anthony kissing Daphne and refuses to marry her, thus a duel is planned. This is where Daphne--as stated by the actress--starts to take control of her own life. In the novel they are not seen by anyone else---the threat from Cressida Cowper--was probably added to reinforce to viewers Cressida is a bully. Later she will try to blackmail a different Bridgerton wife.

[8.5] The sacrifice

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 4: A quite nice and colorful episode involving various main and supporting characters, having required development moving the story forward, pinches of thrill here and there, beautiful setting, costumes, photography, filming and score.

Intense moments toward the end with one person making a big sacrifice.

Did I get this correctly

Warning: Spoilers
The Duke is so angry at his father being an awful father that he would rather die than be married and have children. I definitely don't like my father but not so much that I would not want the best for those I love. Including myself. If I ever have kids and my father treats any of my children the way he treated me, he will surely never see them ever again.

I would also like to mention that it would have been nice for this show to state the reason for a black man being a Duke in the first episode. I guess I was dumb but I didn't want to assume that it was due to the king choosing a black queen. That sounds like something out of a chess game. Black queen and a white king. Would the Queen still be the strongest piece on the board? I guess not because isn't this before Elisabeth and for some reason I always thought that the chess board thing comes from her.

Duel
vivianla26 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Daphne wears a beautiful dress that reminds me of a Barbie I loved as a child. The prince gives her an exquisite diamond necklace.

Anthony takes Daphne to a wrestling match. It is the prince's man versus the duke's friend. Simon glances jealously at the prince with a smiling Daphne.

The duke is getting ready to leave. His servants are packing up for him. The Lady who raised him chastises him for not appreciating enough. She says without love there wouldn't be a new dawn. There wouldn't be society. Because the white king married a black queen, it elevated their race to make it acceptable for them to be dukes and duchesses and royals. The duke scoffs saying their love, if it is the only thing binding this whole thing, is fragile.

Eloise keeps trying to find out who Lady Wimbledon is. She thinks her life shouldn't have to be marriage and settling down.

Daphne attends another ball and has to run out as she has an anxiety attack because she knows the prince is trying to propose. Simon follows her out and says he came to say bye. Daphne says they were never friends as he previously stated and there is no need to.

Daphne angrily storms off to the garden and Simon follows. Simon kisses her then apologizes. Daphne responds placing her lips on his and they make out, with Simon squeezing her breast.

Anthony comes and sees them. He angrily hits Simon and demands he marries her sister as he made her lose her innocence.

There is to be a duel. Anthony informs his two brothers including the youngest one who seems the most easygoing. Even the youngest one seems to agree firmly that there must be a duel. The men are to deal with these heavy affairs and Daphne exclaims she should have a say too.

The black girl reminisces the evening, thinking the youngest Bridgerton son will propose to her. He is so kind - does not play games and does not guard his feelings. However Penelope Featherington has a crush on him and Miss. Thompson does not yet know this.

Anthony goes to see the opera singer and tells her he is to duel. If he wins he will no longer have to follow society's rules and can be with her. They then proceed to kiss and have sex. Anthony walks out of the bedroom (his thighs look so good!).

The men meet at dawn. Daphne comes riding wearing a cape that is blown by the wind. Her white horse is startled by the gun shot and the men check Daphne for wounds who gets up. She says she is not hurt and she needs to speak to the duke.

She pulls aside the duke and cannot believe he would still rather die than marry her. She tells him that they were seen by the blonde girl wanting to marry the prince. The duke still refuses to marry. Daphne is utterly shocked he would allow her to become disgraced. The duke tries to explain saying he can never give her children.

The duke goes back to his place and Daphne announces that the duke and her will get married.

Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan)

Warning: Spoilers
Favorite scene with

Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) - Leaving the Ball before the Prince can propose, Simon coming after her to say Goodbye, furious with him, Simon running after her into the maze and passionately kissing her. Passionately kissing him back in return after he apologizes and more. Being discovered by Anthony, who furiously punches Simon several times and demands Satisfaction when Simon says that he can't marry her.

Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) - Being yelled at by Penelope for going on and on about Lady Whistledown's identity and being told that not everyone can be a Pretty Bridgerton. Very hurt.

Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) - Upset when Marina goes on about Colin at bedtime and Eloise making it worse by going on and on about Lady Whistledown's identity. Yelling at Eloise and telling her that she doesn't care and not everyone can be a Pretty Bridgerton.

A duel?!
Calicodreamin28 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was going along with this episode well enough until a duel was forced into the storyline. Quick, we must force Hastings to declare his love for daphne, surely nothing will do the trick but the threat of death! It was almost too much. Solid acting and great costumes though.

well not so good on rewatch
bradhollicom6 November 2021
The writing is good enough to keep you engaged the first watch. But when you really start paying attention to detail on rewatch, a lot of things don't look so good. In particular, the music during the Prince's ball is clearly coming from a full orchestra, but all that we are in the background are a few inept musicians trying to mime playing their instruments. I really hope that for future seasons they don't overlook these disbelief-invoking. Details.

Ridiculous
hpcmakeup4 April 2021
This show is so predictable and silly I'm not sure what audience it's written for. The writing is moronic and all anyone cares about it having sex and getting married...the writer couldn't possibly include anything of any interest or intelligence to the the characters or a side story. Everyone's hair and makeup is absolutely awful! Her short curled bangs are terrible..is she a 12 yr old girl or a woman seducing multiple men??
