It’s getting colder and darker every day (at least in my part of the world), so it’s certainly time to curl up on the couch with some apple cider and some great TV, or at least that’s what I’ll be doing! While November brings us very few new TV shows, this month’s edition of Cortney’s TV Digest will let you know everything that’s going on with your favorite shows, no matter if they just premiered or have been with us for awhile.
V
A reimagining of the 80’s classic TV mini-series, V tells the tale of aliens who have landed on Earth in peace, but secretly have sinister motives. Starring Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Scott Wolf, V premiered November 3rd to big ratings and will run for four weeks.
It will then go on hiatus, returning in March 2010 to finish the season. »

Gerard Butler is officially attached to co-star in Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut Coriolanus, a contemporary riff on the Roman political drama by William Shakespeare. He will portray Tullus Aufidius, the commander of the Volscian army and reliably shouty nemesis of the title character. Keeping in mind Butler's '09 triptych of Ugly Truth/Gamer/Law Abiding Citizen, the move underscores just how dramatically the scourge of inflation has impacted many A-listers' "one for them, one for me" philosophy. Gerald Butler, who time traveled for the action flick 300, is getting set to play a Roman army commander in a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s "Coriolanus".
But as it turns out, this Coriolanus is going to be set in contemporary times. John Logan has penned the script, and Ralph Fiennes will direct.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army. The political and family drama will co-star Fiennes, William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave.
Shooting is set to begin in Serbia next March, and Icon Entertainment International is currently representing the film to distributors. Coriolanus will mark Fiennes’ directorial debut.
Butler recently starred in the action films Gamer and Law Abiding Citizen. »

A little while ago, a teaser trailer for Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon hit the internet but it was such poor quality that it really didn’t do the film justice. This would probably be the reason why Paramount asked us a day or so later to pull the video. A couple of weeks later, a proper teaser trailer came out with the exact same footage and to say it was tons better would be an understatement.
Today, thanks to Trailer Spy, Dreamworks has released the official trailer for How to Train Your Dragon in glorious HD and it is beautiful. The story is based on the 2003 children’s book by the same name written by Cressida Cowell. The movie is set in the land of Vikings and dragons and follows a Viking boy named Hiccup on the island of Berk. For Hiccup and his people, fighting dragons is an everyday occurrence. »

It’s a show about crisis situations, with each episode taking place at the end of the crisis and bypassing all that dull build-up stuff that usually accompanies said crisis situations on TV shows. You know, lots of talking, lots of button pushing, and lots of gradual panicking? When all that’s out of the way, in will drop the Zeroes, described as a team of “absolutely ruthless” guys who will deal with the situation at hand with good old fashion brute force. That’s the idea behind “Zeroes”, which “Crank” and “Gamer” writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are developing for NBC. Says Taylor: “We want to drop right into it and sustain the absolute most berserk state of crisis, when all of the options have been exhausted. We want to take that last 60 minutes and sustain it for the entire show.” Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor »

Action junkies are about to have a new favorite television show. The writing-directing team behind “Crank” and “Gamer,” Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, are developing a new series for NBC. “Zeroes” will focus on the operations of an elite team as it tries to prevent imminent disaster using, according to Taylor, “absolutely ruthless” force. Hit the jump for more.
THR is describing “Zeroes” as a “high-intensity drama chronicling the last hour of a crisis situation.” Taylor elaborates, saying it is a “crisis show that doesn’t bore you with all the buildup leading to the crisis.” In other words, it is the anti-”Lost.” As of now, Neveldine and Taylor are attached to the script as well as to directing the pilot episode.
Having already proven themselves extremely adept at shooting quickly and with a tight budget, Neveldine and Taylor should make a relatively easy transition into television. It also »

"Crank" series and Gamer writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have set up a one-hour project at NBC titled "Zeroes," which is described as a high-intensity drama chronicling the last hour of a crisis situation. Taylor told Variety that the idea is to do "a crisis show that doesn't bore you with all of the buildup leading to the crisis. We want to drop right into it and sustain the absolute most berserk state of crisis, when all of the options have been exhausted. We want to take that last 60 minutes and sustain it for the entire show." "Zeroes" refers to a fictional team of guys called in as a last resort who are "absolutely ruthless" in their use of force. Thinking outside the box when it comes to naming babies goes part and parcel with being a celebrity, and in their search to come up with the perfect moniker some have clearly pushed that envelope more than others. According to nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz, word names are an increasingly popular way to do just that.
“When looking for a really unusual baby name, many celebrities have started to search the dictionary for a noun or adjective that will define their child, choosing words that have rarely, if ever been used before as people-names,” she explains.

Part Gamer, part Stephen King, I've actually had my eye on Chris Hartwill's Ghost Machine for well over a year now, secretly hoping that its promise of ghostly goings on in a virtual reality game environment would offer something unique to the horror genre. Sort of like Harsh Realm but with teens if you will.
Then, last week, it was reported that the film would be dropped direct to DVD on December 22 and my hopes drooped a little bit. Now that the trailer's arrived it's hard to be too enthused, but this still looks like something I would definitely watch.
Synopsis:
Thrill-seeking military technicians and computer-game enthusiasts Tom (Faris) and Vic (Ford) recklessly smuggle a top-secret, virtual warfare training programme out of their base and into a spooky disused jail, while a vengeful spirit infiltrates the software and draws them into an all-too-real game of life and death.

Earlier today, we attempted to handicap the 2009 World Series (which starts in only a few hours) by taking a look at the at-bat songs for the Philadelphia Phillies. This time, we take a look at the lineup offered up by the New York Yankees. It's a less eclectic batch of tunes for sure, but possibly more effective, as it's filled top-to-bottom with badass New York hip-hop and tough guy tunes sure to swing any game in the Bronx's favor.
It begins with Derek Jeter and Jay-z's "Empire State of Mind" (which he and Alicia Keys will perform live during Game 2 on Thursday night), a great New York anthem for a great New York team (and a great New Yorker). Johnny Damon uses Saliva's "I Walk Alone" as his entrance tune, yet another track that connects baseball and wrestling (it's the same song used by WWE star Batista). Mark Teixeira uses »

This afternoon, the National Press Club got a visit from Christopher "Ludacris" Bridges, who stopped by one of the group's regular luncheons to plug the fundraising dinner for his Ludacris Foundation, advocate for leadership and service and perform "Get Back." (Just kidding on that last part.)
Though most people probably consider him the rapper behind "What's Your Fantasy" and "Money Maker" first and an actor from films like "Hustle & Flow" and "Crash" second, Luda was right at home behind the Npc podium. With his mother Roberta Shields by his side (she's the president of the Ludacris Foundation), the rapper joked about the possibilities of running for office (he's not interested in challenging Barack Obama in 2012) and plugged his work on "Law & Order." "'Gamer' is in theaters, too," he joked.
Once he got down to business, he spoke candidly about his involvement in philanthropy and defended the work of »

Enough rumored Blu-ray Disc release date rumors have crossed my desk to warrant putting together this article so you can get an idea of what the coming months hold for the high-def home video format.
The first rumors suggests the sci-fi horror thriller Pandorum will make fast tracks to Blu-ray on December 22, followed by a devilishly hungry Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body on December 29. I tend to believe the latter is more plausible than the former but we should find out soon enough either way.
The new year should kick off with the direct-to-video sequel Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins Ball.
January 12 is looking to debut the remake of Fame two weeks prior to the original arriving on Blu-ray. Also a possibility for this date is Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 and Summit's critically acclaimed The Hurt Locker which I personally cannot wait to see.

Did the title throw you off a little? Don’t worry, it through me off as well. Yes, it would appear that Disney has produced a Russian-only fantasy movie called Kniga Masterov or in its native Russian Книга мастеров. The English translation is Book of Masters and it’s the first Russian movie Disney has made. It stars an all Russian cast and dang if it doesn’t look brilliant.
I could easily throw out the names of the director, writer, actors and producers but honestly, I doubt you have ever heard of them and they are all Russian. Even IMDb doesn’t have pictures to go with their names. The film is based on Russian folklore and fairy tales but the imagery from the trailer and video clip lean heavily on the Lord of the Rings films. That’s not a bad thing though. I’m all for a good fantasy film, »
