Exclusive: Terence Winter, the writer-producer known for his work on Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos and more, will team with Vincent Piazza, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Phiphen to develop Midge, a tragicomic feature based on an absurd but true, as-yet-untold story.
At the center of it is Thomas Midgley, Jr., the man who in the first half of the 20th century invented two of the most toxic and disastrous chemicals humankind has ever known — leaded gasoline and Freon —without having even been a chemist.
In a statement on the project, Winter told Deadline that “the only thing crazier than this story is that it hasn’t already been told.”
He’s teaming with Piazza to pen the script and both will exec produce, along with automotive journalist Jamie Lincoln Kitman, who also serves as a research consultant on the project. Phiphen’s founder Molly Conners will produce alongside Academy Award nominee Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club). Director meetings are underway.
Winter is best known for creating the acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, as well as for producing and scripting dozens of episodes of The Sopranos, for which he earned three Emmy Awards. In his 25-plus years in television, he’s also won three PGA awards and four from the WGA. Also the creator of HBO’s Vinyl, he’s otherwise best known for scripting Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. More recently, he co-wrote Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, which is out in theaters now.
Piazza is best known for his work on the acting front, having appeared in everything from Boardwalk Empire and Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys to the Sylvester Stallone starrer Tulsa King and IFC thriller Centigrade.
Most recently, Appian Way produced the DiCaprio starrer Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by Scorsese, which is up this year for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Phiphen’s recent projects include the comedic thriller Coup! starring Peter Sarsgaard, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and will be released by Greenwich Entertainment, and the Nicolas Cage Western Butcher’s Crossing.
Winter is repped by CAA, Lbi Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Piazza by Gersh, Untitled Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors and actors to develop their original independent projects.
By 1984, the festival had established itself and was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival after Redford’s character in his 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That year, the Grand Jury Prize in Dramatics was awarded to Old Enough, an...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Among the persistently small number of people in the Indigenous film community who are known in the larger Hollywood ecosystem, Heather Rae has been a mainstay. The independent film producer formerly ran the Sundance Institute’s Native Program (now known as the Indigenous Program); she serves on the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Indigenous Alliance; and her credits, which often feature Native American characters and culture, include 2005 documentary Trudell, 2008 Oscar-nominated Frozen River and 2023 family drama Fancy Dance, which premiered at Sundance in January.
Over the decades, the Idaho-raised Rae, 56, described her heritage as Cherokee on her mother’s side, an identification that has been repeated in references to her in the media. But on Sunday, the New York Post published a story about a watchdog group accusing her of falsely claiming Native identity. A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

Few things feel better as a film lover than getting to see a longtime character actor, someone who’s been stealing scenes in supporting parts for decades, getting the chance to shine in a plum leading role and absolutely knocking it out of the park. Richard Jenkins in The Visitor. Melissa Leo in Frozen River. Clifton Collins Jr. in Jockey.
Debuting to strong word at this year’s Sundance (our review here), Jockey stars Collins as Jackson Silva, a late-in-his-career jockey trying to make one last push for glory when Ruth (Molly Parker), a trainer and Jackson’s longtime friend, acquires a mighty impressive new horse. At the same time, Jackson’s world is thrown for a loop when a young rider (Moises Arias) shows up claiming to be his son.

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

“Never Rarely Sometimes Always” remains one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, with praise not only for Sidney Flanigan‘s breakthrough performance as a teen looking to terminate her pregnancy, but for writer-director Eliza Hittman‘s approach to the material. Hittman’s sensitive, sobering drama has already broken through at the Gotham Awards, where it is nominated for Best Feature, giving it a much-needed boost for the awards season to come.
In a film year unlike any other, Hittman’s script may gain traction in a fluid Oscar race for Best Original Screenplay. Smaller independent films like “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” have done well in this category for decades, with recent examples including “First Reformed,” The Lobster,” “20th Century Women,” “Another Year” and “Frozen River.” In each of those cases, Original Screenplay was either the only bid or one of few nominations for the movie, which is...

Endeavor Content has set a three-film development deal with producer Heather Rae, committing to movie scripts from Indigenous filmmakers. The new pact was announced on Oct. 12, Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Along with Rae, Crystal EchoHawk of IllumiNative and Bird Runningwater of Sundance Institute are advising on the projects. Research from IllumiNative — a woman-led racial justice organization that amplifies Native voices — found that Native people are vastly underrepresented on screen. They make up anywhere from 0% to .04% of representation in American film and television. There are even fewer Native writers and directors. The partnership with Endeavor Content aims to grow those numbers by providing a platform for Indigenous filmmakers.
“Heather is an incredible producer, elegant person, and a fierce advocate for Native American and Indigenous storytelling,” Endeavor Content co-presidents Graham Taylor and Chris Rice said. “Pairing her exceptional vision with Crystal and Bird as Impact Partners will allow us to enable and ennoble these important voices in film,...

Exclusive: Real estate mogul and indie film distributor Charles S. Cohen, who bought the Landmark Theatre chain 14 months ago, made more waves in the exhibition space late last year when he acquired flagship UK art house exhibitor and distributor Curzon.
In one of his first interviews since the acquisition, we spoke with Cohen about the Curzon buy and strategy, the landscape for independent exhibition and distribution, and Cohen Media Group’s growing production plans.
The tireless investor and owner of Cohen Brothers Realty Corporation, is well known as a supporter and lover of independent film. He also has business interests in wine, fashion, lighting and luxury goods.
As a side note, during the wide-ranging conversation (which was just before Curzon’s massive run with Parasite), I was wide of the mark in my spontaneous guess at the Curzon deal price. In hindsight, it would naturally be much more than I...

The 2019 Gotham Award nominations were announced on October 24, and though these prizes don’t usually preview the Oscars, there have been times when the prizes have lined up, including three times in recent years when the Oscar came down to the wire. The Gothams picked “Birdman” (2014), “Spotlight” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2016), and then the academy picked them a couple of months later. Will this year’s prizes also turn out to be a Best Picture preview? Make your predictions now in our predictions center.
The Gothams are presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project to the best in indie cinema. But these awards can be tough to forecast since the nominees and winners are decided by small juries with just a handful of members each composed of industry insiders and film journalists. So much of the recent political debate has focused on the United States’ southern border, and on the threat of illegal drugs and criminals filtering up through Mexico. But what of the north, where Americans traffic opiates and prescription pills from Canada across a border that runs nearly three times as long? “Little Woods” opens and closes with shots that straddle this imaginary line, filmed by a cameraman with one foot in North Dakota and the other in Canada — an abstract but effective reminder that all this talk of walls distracts from problems facing another portion of the population altogether.
With “Little Woods,” writer-director Nia DaCosta concentrates many of these concerns into the dour daily struggles of two young women, self-reliant Ollie (Tessa Thompson) and her more trouble-prone half-sister Deb (Lily James), who stand to lose the house where Ollie nursed their mother through what appears to have been a tough final chapter.

What’s it like living strapped in America? Little Woods, an uneven but compelling feature debut from writer-director Nia DaCosta, takes you right into the trenches. Things are booming in the remote town of Little Woods, North Dakota, as long as you’re in the oil business. But if you’re Ollie (Tessa Thompson), out on probation after doing time for smuggling drugs in from Canada, all you feel is the agony of having your options squeezed. She can barely hold onto the house where she cared for her now-deceased mother.

Arthouse specialist Landmark Theatres has been sold by Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban to Cohen Media Group for an undisclosed price.
The sale ends months of speculation about Landmark’s fate — the company has been shopped around for months, reportedly drawing interest from Amazon, Netflix, and Byron Allen. Cohen Media Group chairman Charles S. Cohen, a real estate developer whose fortune is estimated to be $3.4 billion, said he will retain the senior management team of Landmark Theatres.
In an interview with Variety, Landmark Theatres president and CEO Ted Mundorff said he was pleased that the sale had been resolved and also said he was optimistic that Cohen, a cinephile, was an ideal owner.
“It’s a great day for the industry,” said Mundorff. “You have a film lover who bought a theater company… and he’s going to keep the ship running the way it has been going.”

Melissa Leo has acquired a lot of acting wisdom. On this episode, she graciously shares some. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her incredible performance in Frozen River, and won one for playing Alice Ward in The Fighter. Recent notable performances can be found in Francine, The Most Hated Woman In America, and her latest, Unlovable, where she plays opposite Charlene deGuzman, who co-wrote the script based on her real-life experiences in a program for sex and love addiction. Leo talks lovingly about that production, and about how she sometimes gleans more substantial info from a dolly grip […]...

The Film Independent Spirit Awards began in 1984 as a way to shine a spotlight on smaller art-house movies that often were made on a shoestring budget and came from entities outside the major studios. From its inception as an alternative to the likes of the Academy Awards, titles that were eligible have been required to have a budget cap of $20 million, although exceptions could be made. It is also a more populist organization. While a select group of committee members choose the nominees, anyone who can afford to pay a yearly $95 fee can vote on the final outcomes online.
With Friday morning’s announcement of this year’s slate of Spirit contenders (see the full list of nominees here), it is as good a time as any to investigate just how independent these awards are these days.
