A big welcome to UK disc purveyors Indicator, or Powerhouse, or how does Powerhouse Indicator sound? Savant’s first review from the new label is a favorite from the Columbia library. The extras are the lure: they company has snagged long-form, in-depth interviews with James Fox and director Arthur Penn. Everybody’s written about The Chase but here Penn tells his side of the story.

Don’t mess with the one-armed man — did you know that at 56 years, Spencer Tracy could whup Ernest Borgnine to a frazzle? John Sturges knocked this one out of the ballpark and booted his career into high gear. It’s well remembered… but does anyone remember that the subject is the murder of a Japanese-American? It’s a combo social issue film And a tough guy western.

Horton Foote, Lillian Hellman and Arthur Penn's All-Star vision of an Ugly America found few friends in 1965; now its overstated scenes of social injustice and violence are daily events. Marlon Brando leads a terrific cast -- Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Angie Dickinson, Robert Duvall! -- to endure the worst Saturday ever to hit one cursed Texas township. American actor Bradley Cooper is currently awaiting Sunday.s night.s Best Supporting Actor announcement to see if he.ll be rewarded for his work in David O. Russell.s American Hustle, and he.ll soon be going off to film Clint Eastwood.s true crime drama American Sniper. So it makes perfect sense that the Older Than America actor, who was also in Wet Hot American Summer, is attached to produce and star in American Blood, the adaptation of the upcoming novel from New Zealand author Ben Sanders. I have to assume this is his long con in campaigning for the role of Amerigo Vespucci in an upcoming biopic. Warner Bros. beat out a handful of other studios to acquire the rights to the book, according to THR, including several TV companies. At 24-years old, Sanders already has three bestselling novels under his belt, all clever crime thrillers with...

Hard-hitting slavery drama and rambunctious crime caper face off with seven nominations each as the awards season gets into gear
• Golden Globes 2014: full list of nominations
• Golden Globes 2014 nominations - in pictures
American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave emerged as the early frontrunners for awards season, as both films picked up seven nominations at the 71st annual Golden Globes. David O Russell's conman caper dominated the Globes' comedy-or-musical section, while Steve McQueen's slavery saga held sway in the neighbouring drama category. The race towards Oscar night now looks set to pit the disreputable crime romp against the weighty expose of institutionalised American evil.
Based on Solomon Northup's 1853 memoir, 12 Years a Slave stars the British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man from New York state, sold into bondage in Louisiana. Its nominations include best director, best dramatic actor and the crowning best film drama.

I don’t think the comic-book violence embedded in Batman movie mythology caused the horrible movie-theater killing spree in Aurora, Colo., turning mass excitement at the first showing of The Dark Knight Rises into mass terror. Assault weapons and a mountain of ammunition, pathetically easy and legal for an average American evil madman to obtain, did that. While the attack took place at a suburban multiplex on a summer’s night, the same horror could have been unleashed somewhere else — a baseball stadium, a shopping mall, a music arena, any place we gather as a group, feeling trusting and fortunate.

Pick Of The Week
Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (Blu-ray)
Four English tourists find themselves stranded in the mysterious village of Karlsbad, a sinister and remote place of deadly, dark legend. Their journey leads them to an abandoned castle where a nightmarish destiny awaits them. However, it wasn’t just fate that brought them here, but an evil force in need of resurrection, a blood craving beast known only as Count Dracula, Prince Of Darkness. Review.
And the rest…
Immortals (DVD/Blu-ray)
Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land.

A Dangerous Method (15)
(David Cronenberg, 2011, UK/ Ger/Can/Swi) Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel, Sarah Gadon. 100 mins
Cronenberg perverts the cause of the costume drama, as Jung and Freud go where no psychoanalyst has gone before, lifting the lid on 19th-century decorum then falling into their own can of worms. Those expecting psychedelic gore (or kinky erotica) will be disappointed; this is intelligent, articulate and restrained, but not quite conventional.
The Muppets (U)
(James Bobin, 2011, Us) Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Kermit The Frog. 110 mins
The faded felt performers mock their own obsolescence in a family musical that's very hard to dislike. Built around a shambolic "let's put on a show" comeback story, it doesn't always crackle with wit, but South Park-ish self-awareness and Conchords-style songs compensate.
The Woman In Black (12A)
(James Watkins, 2012, UK) Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer. 95 mins
A great many things go bump and argh!

Chronicle (12A)
(Josh Trank, 2012, Us) Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Alex Russell, Michael Kelly. 83 mins
It's one of those forehead-slapping, "why didn't We think of this?" ideas: a low-budget, found-footage teen superhero movie. Think Paranormal Activity meets Misfits, or Kick-Ass meets Jackass, as three ordinary boys acquire powers but not the responsibility that comes with them. They start off with mischievous pranks, then progress to … well, part of the fun is that this is a movie out of nowhere. Pick holes in it later, but first enjoy the surprise!
Carnage (15)
(Roman Polanski, 2011, Fra/Ger/Pol/Spa) Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, John C Reilly. 80 mins
Four actors, two couples, one apartment, and the stage is set for a face-off that goes from sober, civilised and trivial to the exact opposite in no time. Adapted from a play, it's still pretty theatrical, but as chamber pieces go, sporadically sharp and funny.

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Harris; French television documentary on real-life case which inspired the film; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

Jonah Hex: "Yippie-kai-lame, motherfucker. I'm not sure what the fuck Jonah Hex was supposed to be. Rather than a tight-fisted western popcorn flick about a vigilante bounty hunter trying to track down the outlaw who murdered his family and scarred his face, we're left with a cowboyed-up mash-up of pseudo-westerns, as gazed through a heady dose of peyote. Not a single frame doesn't feel derived from something else, whether it's Wild Wild West, Sherlock Holmes, Back to the Future III, or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The titular character growls and snarls his way through a rammy, stilted Ramboner, gunning through the flimsiest sketches of characters until the film abruptly skids to a whinnying cliff-edged halt. At a paltry 81-minute run time, you don't have time to enjoy yourself. It's like the studio gave up halfway through, which was about a half-hour past when the cast stopped caring. It's a...
