Ritual Courtship
rmax30482323 November 2013
It's only a short black-and-white film with no budget to speak of. Two young women have met on the internet and for a few days they spend a few minutes talking to each other on a park bench before going off together for a sexual encounter.

It's not badly done, considering the circumstances. Both actresses seem natural and unaffected. One, perhaps slightly older, has had more experience with other women. The younger, darker girl is uncertain but not exactly winsome either.

The dialog is fast and intelligent. They might be a boy and a girl talking about the difference between love and sexuality, not that the conversation is in the least heady.

Almost every shot is at eye level and captures the two sitting next to one another on that bench. Nothing dramatic happens, no startling angles or directorial razzle dazzle. It's somewhat amusing and totally inoffensive.

...and little more. amusing, simple, well known. two wome on bench. few days. a dialogue exploring fears and prudence and vulnerability, curiosity, desire and expectations. result - a film reminding the spring mornings. its basic virtue - the realism. and the humor. and the seductive way to propose an universal story. the low budget is another virtue as source of a delicate portrait of love and its courtship levels.
